IMO, this article kind of oversentimentalizes the role of music criticism--particularly as frequently practiced by Pitchfork, which specializes in the "Its great!" or "Its shit!" kind of reviews--where the purpose of the writeup isn't so much to promote discussion as it is simply to slap a quantified rating on it. Really, any review that comes with a star/numeric rating is already telling you that it is more about giving consumer advice than about thinking about a piece of art. (and art is subjective, so what does somebody else's quantification really mean to somebody hearing it with differen

Really enjoyed these guys with the Hold Steady the other night. At the show I don't think I understood a word they said, so listening to the album I'm like "Oh, so that's what these songs are about!"

The partying still goes on all summer, its just too hot to burn shit.

That's pretty much true of every Thursday night, isn't it?
-
I'd listen to only the demos, to keep it real. Demos of the demos, in fact.
-
What do they know?

I think part of the point of this record was not to deconstruct everything in sight. YHF was fascinating for the way the songs were broken down and tweaked and twisted--it was refreshing and different, but it can get old just like anything else. After a while its gotta be refreshing to write a song and just let it be and not feel compelled to mess with it.

More Than You Think

Well, at least that song rocks harder than On & On & On, so I'll let it slide...this time.
-
I think it is "stone awake". That sounds cooler to me, anyway. Can anyone confirm for me, in On & On & On, is he saying "we'll stay together YET" or "we'll stay together YEAH". This could impact my whole appreciation for the song. Up until the album version of the song, I always heard it as "yeah" on the live recordings and I always thought that was absolutely horrible. You should never end a line with "yeah" unless you are totally rocking out and need that extra guttural exclamation point at the end to demonstrate how hard you are rocking out. Otherwise it just sounds silly.

I went to see The Hold Steady on St. Patty's Day. No idea if anybody in that band is of Irish descent, but they brought a case of beer onstage with them, which seemed pretty much in keeping with the day's festivities. (although they likely do that every night)

I think it is interesting how "oldies" radio has now incorporated the 60s and 70s. When I was growing up there was a clear cutoff point where "oldies" stopped and "classic rock" began (I'm not quite old enough for any of them to have been "newies" for me). But it is interesting to notice the shift...

Hey, I remember them! I guess that's all I have to contribute to this conversation.

--> QUOTE(Paul B @ Mar 16 2007, 08:42 PM) I nodded off during Wilco at the Auditorium in Fall 05. Plush seats in the nosebleed section and being kinda old coupled with a lot of Budweiser products that night equal a sleepy Paul....You might want to think about drinking coffee before the show instead of beer. That part about sleeping through WSP only to wake up to Blues Traveler does sound horrible. ("What is that horrible ringing in my ears?? Oh, its just a harmonica solo!") I can't think of too many shows I've walked out of. I mean, probably a bunch of times I've been at a bar where

My bracket took some more hits today, but at least they were ones that virtually everybody else got wrong too (Wisconsin). I like to think I am pacing myself--I'm way back in the pack in my pool right now, but still have not lost a single team of my final 8, so I'm in good position for a comeback. I was pissed about Oregon winning until I looked at my bracket and realized I have them down going all the way to the Elite 8. When did I make that pick? And how much was I drinking because I don't remember making that call at all. In any case, it appears to be one of my more genius moves of th

Can't we all get along? Somehow I'm pretty sure this is all Duke's fault.

You didn't see anything. He did kind of launch that dude, didn't he?

I know there are at least a few other Columbus people on this board, so I was curious if anybody else was at the show last night? I've only been back in Columbus a couple months now and this was my first time being at the Newport since my college days. It was probably one of the smaller crowds I've ever seen that place--which really surprised me (OSU must be on spring break)--and I was actually kind of worried that the band would come out and be a little pissed at the so/so turnout, but it was all smiles all night long. The band looked like they were having a blast up there, and it total

That video has been floating around a long time. I used to work at the help desk for a company that was primarily Mac-based and we used to play that video at least once a day. Funny stuff. There's a lot truth in there, but you could easily flip it around and do the same kind of treatment to Windows. Ultimately, I don't have a strong preference for one over the other. I've considered buying a Mac before, but the price tag is a hurdle for me. I currently own an Windows PC and an Apple iPod, so I guess I'm basically just a lemming, following the whims of society... Of course, if you want

So far my bracket has been a mess, but I haven't yet lost anybody I had going deep into the tourney. Georgetown is worrying me right now, tho. Lets pick it up, fellas.

I called the record company and they agree with me that they didn't hear any singles on that record.

Yeah, I'm in a strage position here--I lost 8 games (a lot of the mid-seeds), but nobody that lost I had advancing past the 2nd, so I've got a shot at coming out of this ok.
