  1. http://music-mix.ew.com/2010/11/11/bruce-springsteen-fallon-roots/ even though Fallon sucks, I'll be watching...
  2. thanks guys, really helpful comments... i've definitely listened to Born to Run (many times in fact) and it is probably my favorite so far. looking forward to exploring more. the biggest disappointment is that i may never seem him live. hope there's another tour within the next couple of years.
  3. I never got into Springsteen until this past year, even though I was born and raised in NJ where he is like a religion. I listened to Magic first, and I really liked it, but I thought, "imagine how good the old stuff must be.." So I went back to the beginning with Greetings from Asbury Park all the way up to Darkness at the Edge of Town, and was astounded at the energy, the poetic and intense lyrics, the musicianship and arrangements, etc. I listened to NYC Serenade driving back from work today, and I was lost for those 9 minutes and utterly amazed. What do you guys recommend after th
  4. sounds like something off of Exit the Dragon, which, by the way, is a very underrated album. it's actually pretty great. read somewhere that Blackie had some major heroin habit and was in a pretty low state in LA.
  5. that's really amazing...they seem like such great musicians, wonder why they don't try original material.
  6. this album is indeed awesome it's got such style and swagger, and has some nuanced sounds that maybe the other albums lacked. dan's singing is particularly good. i've always liked their stuff, and they were incredible live when i saw them years ago, but kind of lost touch for the past two albums...brothers has made me want to go back to their entire catalog.
  7. it's a bit restrained compared to the live version, but still displays their understated brilliance.
  8. Gaslight Anthem...I had never heard of them until recently and after listening to half of a song I was ready to dismiss them as a bar band doing Springsteen covers but I am glad I persisted and gave them a chance. They have some infectious tunes and pretty good lyrics...they're good at what they do and it's oddly refreshing to hear some straight ahead rock.
  9. the radio rip doesn't do the song justice. plus, The National's songs have a way slowly revealing their brilliance after repeated listens. i liked the song this morning but thought live versions were better, but now with the proper download i've come to appreciate it a lot more. great stuff.
  10. there are live versions of 9 of those tracks on youtube...and just based on those clips, this album's awesomeness is almost gauranteed.
  11. this is great...i wondered how they could top Boxer. sounds like this album will have a more dynamic and expansive sound.
  12. visually stunning but the story was weak and the dialogue typical James Cameron cheese. $500 million to make and Cameron couldn't buy a decent script?
  13. that is one beautiful book...so sad. those last pages had me in tears.
  14. those newsreel images you see in the trailer are NOT in the movie. it's bullshit the studio inserted so the dumb ass mainstream audience has a frame of reference as to what "caused" the disaster. i am guessing that this will be the number one reason people will be turned off to the movie, because "it doesn't tell you what happened..." like that's even the fucking point. sort of like when people complained that No Country for Old Men had no ending. there's a great article in Esquire about the movie. the writer has seen it and gives a lot of praise. So make no mistake - the mo
  15. I don't think anyone's mentioned J. Mascis Doug Martsch
  16. http://www.the-fly.co.uk/ check this out...this is an even better performance. for all the band's expertise in the studio, and the layered sound they have, the songs sound just as awesome stripped down. they are also a great live band. can't wait to see them in June.
  17. i thought the same thing...until i finished watching season 1 of Wire this past weekend. if the Wire can maintain the same level of excellence in the next four seasons, i think it might just be the greatest tv show i've ever seen (or will ever see)
  18. i just finished season 1 and am stunned at the brilliance of this show. all those network crime shows - CSI, Law & Order, etc - are cartoons in comparison. one thing is for certain is that it demands close attention or else you would be totally lost. season 2 is up next, and i can't wait Omar is my favorite character too. i also think all of the characters in the west side crew were great - D'Angelo, Avon, Stringer, etc.
  19. i am having trouble getting past the third track...horrendous...i can't get past the truly stupid lyrics
  20. i am still on season 1 and hooked. what's so different about season 2 (without giving anything away)? is it just a shift in the focus of the characters, new characters? just curious.
  21. David Adams Richards is a great Canadian novelist, considered one of the best by many critics. He writes old fashioned and melancholic stories set in the Mirimachi region, usually focusing on the poor and uneducated. Try the novels Mercy Among Children and Friends of Meager Fortune...the former won the Giller Prize, Canada's top literary award.
  22. i like some of their stuff, but i saw them live a few years ago and wasn't impressed. the surest way to turn me off to a band is to attend a mediocre live performance. it's hard to shake off that prejudice, even if every band has a bad day once in a while.
  23. your reaction is really hard to understand, especially if you are a fan. i think this album takes all the best elements of the last three and is much more consistent. i honestly don't think there is a bad track on it. oh well, different strokes....
  24. i'd have to say Spellbound is my favorite so far. it has that melancholic epic sound that only they can do...the guitar part at the end reminds me of Bends-era Radiohead. Winter Hill is definitely great too, but it's probably the most mainstream sounding song on there. i think the songs will get better with each listen. check it out with headphones...there's a lot going on there. for me, they are the best UK band right now.
  25. the second half is even better i think
