  1. Could have been.  Instead, they became a pop band. Once I heard shiny happy people I was done.

i like shiny happy people. it was a good fit on the record. REM at their worst was still better than most bands best. to earlier post: i saw wilco open for REM too. could've been the venue (ancient small stadium) but didn't seem like they were at their best. think there was a lot of tension simmering that blew up not too long after. conversely, REM were fantastic.

  2. I have an original brick from the steeple of St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Athens where they played their first show. Happy 38th to my favorite all-time band (sorry, Wilco).

i'm with you. i was into them from "chronic town" on. luckily saw them a real lot including a private show in a studio in vancouver. sat about 5 feet away from michael stipe during the set. it was filmed for AOL sessions. i've found a few vids on youtube but not the whole show. you can see my feet, haha. although i miss them, i'm kind of glad they packed it in when they did rather than continue when they weren't feeling it anymore. it seems that relations are ok with the guys in the band nowadays & i wouldn't be shocked if they played again. i don't see them doing a big mega reunion tour though ala guns n roses. something more low key would be nice.

  3. the last time i saw the Stooges, the lineup went:

The Scientists (first-ever US gig) > Mudhoney > The Stooges > Sleep

yeah, that was ridiculous. Arm mentioned "I still can't believe we are in the middle of a Scientists and Stooges sandwich."

we luv mudhoney here in seattle. mark sat a few seats away from me @ the post pop depression show. you know his day job is in sub pop's warehouse.

  4. When the Stooges reformed they were mostly doing festivals in Europe. That year, Devo was going to headline a night at the Bumbershoot festival in Seattle (when it was still cool) but someone got sick. Some friends & I noticed that the last Stooges gig in England sort of dovetailed nicely into the time frame. Easy flight over north pole. We started emailing the promoter & would put The Stooges in subject line & "oh please oh please" in the body. Well someone was paying attention & we got them! Legend has it that Mark Arm of Mudhoney went to the promoter's office in knee pads & asked "who do I have to blow to open for Iggy?". He got the gig. It was a magical show. A buddy refused to believe it was happening until Ron Asheton walked on stage. Saw 1 more show with the Ashetons & it was great, too. Funhouse is 1 of my all time favorite records. So lucky got to see the original band (minus bass player) perform it.

  5. I watched two excellent documentaries recently.  The first is "Icarus" on Netflix -- about the Russian Olympic doping scandal.  The second was on MTV[!] - a career retrospective on R.E.M. that originally came out in 2014.

    Icarus was fascinating.

  6. The new very limited edition live record "Ogre's Trumpet" is phenomenal. Think only made 1000 LPs & 1000 cds. The current GBV lineup may be the best yet. They've been together a few years now & are really tight but with plenty of GBV anarchy. In a word, alcohol haha. Doug Gillard is a great guitar player. Highly recommended.

  7. I got tix for the 2nd Seattle show. I saw them a lot in the early days in small places (spoiled) but it has been at least 10 years. Have seen Eddie pop up at other people's shows many times since then. My friend has only seen them once, so I pleasantly surprised her & got these. Actually we're both excited. I did the new ticketbastard verified fan presale & it actually worked. At first only upper deck came up but when I hit the ADA button some great seats came up. Sadly, I qualify for that. We're sitting on the club level, which is nice for a 3 hour show. Should be good. Historically in Seattle the 2nd night has been better & its a Friday vs a Wednesday so the work thing isn't a factor.

  8. Saw Hiatt open up for the Old 97's last fall. She put on a great show. I hope you make it!

high fever, not going. flu epidemic around here. found someone to use tickets who will appreciate. i've been having some issues & the smart move is to not go. they'll be back. bummed about it though. bundled up with some soup & college hoops.

  9. Oh no! I knew him a little. The last time I saw him was a solo show at the Riviera in Vegas. It was a cool show that ran for awhile where he'd do his music & the music that inspired him. Told stories between songs. Talked to him for quite awhile after the show. Smithereens were a great band! Already missing him...
