  1. True the timing was great! Fun fact I met David Bowie at a nine inch nails concert it was one of the most surreal concert experiences I ever had!

Very cool! I saw that tour, an amazing & unique show. I got to meet Bowie about 1990 (greatest hits tour with Adrian Belew in the band). Very brief but he was very nice. That is way up on the list of musicians I got to meet in my 25 years in the music biz.

  2. Yeah nine inch nails is a funny band for me I had a few albums liked some songs but then saw them live and like you said they deliver in the live form! I’d say in reality I’m a lukewarm fan at best! Still even though I haven’t bought a nin album in 10 plus years I’ll always catch them live if I can!

I really like the 2 EPs that have come out this year, especially Add Violence. The first one is only available digital but they put out a cd of Violence a few weeks ago. I think they might be out on vinyl, I don't really do vinyl. They also just released digital a cover of the theme from Halloween which is outstanding. For me Trent is a musical genius & even more so as he has matured. He's found a great partner in crime with Atticus Ross. Some of the soundtrack work they've done is outstanding. I think Bowie has a lot to do with where he is now. He took Trent under his wing at a crucial point. Couldn't really ask for a better mentor.

  3. I've seen hundreds of shows over the last 40 years so this is high praise. Nine Inch Nails in Vegas on Friday night was 1 of the best ever for me. They were absolutely stunning. I go back a long way with them & always have enjoyed them live but this was on a higher plane. The current line up for the band may be the best ever for them. The old material was stellar & the new stuff amazing. They played 90 minutes which normally I would think too short but they gave it everything. The Hesitation Marks tour was more electronic & funky. This show was more rock oriented. Some very emotional moments also. The cover of Bowie's I Can't Give Everything Away was very moving, as was Hurt. Everyone of the 4000 there was singing along with that. Still an incredibly powerful song after all these years. Other highlights were the only performance of Terrible Lies this year & The Frail/The Wretched. The Day the World Went Away was best I've seen. My favorite recent song, The Background World, works real well live even without the long outro. Let's hope they tour more extensively next year. It was totally worth flying to Vegas (with pneumonia). Paying the piper now after getting home at midnight. Also saw the Pixies the next night. They were pretty good & I enjoyed the show. NIN was magic though. Setlist below:

  4. I saw Nels play with the Firm's bassist, and drummer Stephen Perkins from Jane's Addiction in a band called Banyan. All instrumental and improv. Pretty wicked. Or maybe it was Mike Watt. Seen em both with Banyan. It's a rotating cast of musicians. Either way, Firm guy was good. Think they played Machine Gun. Hazy memories.

there's a bunch of banyan stuff up on archiv.org.

  5. The new live album just rips! I'm not always the biggest fan of live albums but the sound on this is pristine and the band sounds ferocious.  Highlights include the band jumping into a teetering version of Answering Machine taking it from a near miss to one of the highlights of the set.

Oh, if you can't tell from my nickname, I'm a bit of a Replacements/Westerberg/Stinson fan.

    murder!!!!!

  6. bob's last stand or nearly that. what an amazing record. hope paul tours some in the future. i saw the first night of the reunion tour & it was a stellar show. i guess the tour imploded later. the seeds of discontent were already there though as he was already doing the  tshirt thing.

  7. that's like saying you can't tell if it's a Justin Bieber or Motorhead song.

C'mon now. People are people, so why should it be that you and lammy should get along so awfully? (doh doh doh)

the Cure are great. Depechey Modey not so much. They probably are giving everyone their own personal cheese whiz though. Have you seen the vid of DM doing "Heroes". Horrifying.

  8. Wilco covers Tom Petty last night:

Apologies if this has been posted already, but it's been one of those weeks. ;)

I really enjoyed this cover. I have been feeling that Tom got short shrift on the news due to wall to wall Las Vegas coverage, so spent some time on you tube last night reminiscing over my favorite TP songs. I had totally forgotten about Listen to Her Heart - what a great song!

    Nice cover! thanks!

  9. the only two times i saw TP, i thought he was fine but unfortunately was upstaged by the opening band each time (Replacements in '89; My Morning Jacket in '10).

still, you can't deny he was a master craftsman who wrote a lot of great songs and put together a lasting band who was the perfect fit.

the pic i posted was backstage in 1989. the replacements did half a brilliant set then....the trouble started. mats in a nutshell, haha. petty was great that night too.
