Mr. Heartbreak replied to lost highway's topic in Tongue-Tied Lightning
I've been saying this for months now, or some version of it. I have no problem with the guy running for mayor, or city council, or even governor of a state...you gotta start somewhere. But he has no business being anywhere near the Oval Office. For that reason alone, I think the people who have supported him and egged him on really are deplorable. -

Yep. Honestly, I hope Hillary and her advisors are smart enough to spend very little time on this during the debate and default directly to "I want to focus on making life better for the American people." Watched this video this morning, and it's downright depressing seeing Trump supporters - regular folks - continue to defend him: http://www.bbc.com/news/world-37599788 -

I am truly baffled by the uproar. The guy has a recorded history of referring to various women as pigs, dogs, and slobs. He publicly referenced Megyn Kelly's menstrual cycle as "blood coming out of her wherever." He went on and on about how Miss Universe Alicia Machado got fat, and called her "disgusting." These were not ancient comments like on that tape...they were recent! Then you add in all the other stuff - calling Mexicans rapists, saying a Mexican judge should recuse himself from his case because he's planning to build a wall, suggesting we stop allowing Muslims coming into the U.S., -

Really glad I went. Full disclaimer: I never got to see any incarnation of Yes prior to this, and had only seen Jon once, solo acoustic. I resisted the temptation to check the previous setlist, so almost everything was a surprise. You can find some very HQ footage from the first night of the tour in Orlando on YouTube. Jon's voice is still incredible, and it was great to see him with a full band that included Wakeman!

Anderson, Rabin & Wakeman...unless they cancel at the last minute.

I discovered the original Monty Python's Flying Circus shows on YouTube, listed in order by episode. First one is Monty Python 1X1, then 1X2, etc. Seeing a lot of bits I'd never seen before, along with many of the classics.

Thanks, bud! It's always fun to revisit those shows.

Glad to see they're kicking off a show with Filthy & Fried...that one stood out to me immediately as a favorite. Love Kinky Hypocrite, too. Kinda bummed that Shit Shots Count and Primer Coat both dropped out of the set list, though. Still, looking forward to seeing them next month.

Oops, I just got back on here and saw this. Yep, pretty sure we were both done, though I did propose taking it to PM and was told no. As someone in a mixed racial marriage, I must say I'm glad VC, while not very racially diverse itself, is such a racially sensitive group. Gives me hope! -
Hey, chuckrh, how was the show?

My bad. I had multiple reasons for employing the dialect, and hadn't even really reflected on them. That's what I get for multitasking. So getting back to the overtly political, as John Smith was doing above: is The Donald paying a price yet for his latest tweets? I'm guessing no. -

Accuracy was exactly my reason for choosing dialect. She said "stank," not "stinks." My ex spoke English as a 2nd language, so of course she was confused by the misuse of the word "stank" when it should have been "stinks." If I'd wanted to overstate the point, I would have used "dat" instead of "that." How does that jibe with your stated goal of never hurting anyone's feelings? Ever consider a career in politics? Agreed. We should take this to PMs if you want to, er, get me to "reflect." https://youtu.be/M5QGkOGZubQ -

With all due respect, I'd consider my version to be easier to read, as well as more accurate. The girl misused the word "stank." If she said, "I axed you a question," would you correct it to "asked?" Might seem condescending to some. I do wonder why you have "pro writer" in quotation marks, though. That's what I am: a professional writer. It's my living. Were those like air quotes? I mean, I don't try to rewrite every VC post to perfection. It's quick and sloppy, of course. Since you have the stated goal of trying not to offend, I am going to follow your very fine example and not take the -

I made use of dialect for a specific purpose: I'm a pro writer and I wanted to make the post as easy to read as quickly as possible. And, as Frank Zappa once noted, there are plenty of ethnic groups who have certain characteristics, and those characteristics are generally made fun of by other ethnic groups. It was an illustration - a single anecdote - of a person who is black and had little racial sensitivity toward Asian people. That was about my ex, who was Asian, and I could tell many, many similar stories of my current wife (also Asian, though a different nationality) and the poor treatmen -

See, now, that story is hilarious, right? Unless you're Asian. Then maybe you have a sense of humor about it, but maybe not. To answer your question: sure, I made those names up on the spur of the moment. I don't have that many black friends. (After all, I'm on a Wilco board, and what could be whiter than a Wilco concert? A: Via Chicago.) That was more like a scenario that could have played out during one of the campaigns when I was volunteering for Obama. But if you're on my Facebook, you'll see a veritable Rainbow Coalition of white, Asian, Latino and black friends. However - and this -

Is that because of my poor memory, or are you assuming I don't have any black friends? -

Pretty sane responses here. Good job! I should know better than to try to type an anecdote on my iPhone: too abbreviated and too many details left out. 1) This story took place at a railway museum. The guy who told the story was the manager, and responsible for getting groups through the line quickly. He was talking one-on-one with someone else about getting these three groups outside the building through the line. 2) The woman was a teacher, and was not part of the original conversation. She overheard one person pointing out three groups in a conversation with another. For time purpose -

When I tell the anecdote orally, I only try to do the black dialect. My Filipino accent is terrible. I think you may have willfully misunderstood my point, which was that even a far left liberal like me can see why so many folks are tired of falling all over themselves to avoid offending anyone. We have become a nation of namby pamby wimps. As for your question about a Trump rally...I don't even know where to start with that one. I guess you think that if two white men have a conversation about race that's NOT a Black Lives Matter commercial, we must be right-wingers? You don't have any -

I think this is exactly what they want to do. Maybe not do these things without anyone finding offense, but at least do them without facing consequences. I have been listening to people bitch about political correctness for 30 years, and it's funny: I never used to sympathize with them at all, but as I get older (and, presumably, slightly more conservative), I have begun to see their point to a small extent. I was at a networking event recently, and talking one on one with the guy that runs the group. He's gay, but he's also white and from Missouri, so I believe him when he says he grew up -

I went to bed feeling pretty good last night - relieved, because he had become so unhinged, she remained so calm and...well, presidential...and she even had a little fun. Then, this morning, I find this alternate reality, where people think Trump actually won. It's just unfathomable. There are some "sane" people out there who were very critical of Trump's performance - even Shepard Smith on Fox News said Trump blew it ("I just can't see 'Miss Piggy' and 'Miss Housekeeper' flying"), and so did Bill Kristol ("Trump lost it. He choked.") - but still, there are literally millions of idiots out -
Thanks, guys. I thought Lammy was at this one, too. What a long, strange trip it's been. Funny how you got falsely accused of being a "Touch-head" before the term had even been coined!

September 23rd, 1982. Veterans' Memorial Coliseum, New Haven, CT. My first Dead show, 34 years ago today. I'm sure I've posted about this a few times here over the years. At 17, I was a little rocker dude, heavily into Van Halen, The Who, Aerosmith, etc. My brother, three years my senior, had already graduated high school with a head full of acid and a bottle of Jack in his hand, more or less. I hadn't even taken my first dose...still experimenting with weed and a little booze. I'd heard bro playing the Dead on our little record player. Europe '72. I thought they were okay, but a little du

A couple of my favorites, which I don't think have been mentioned here, are A Carrot Is As Close As A Rabbit Gets to A Diamond (great title...lol) and the Legendary A&M Sessions EP. The Legendary Sessions EP was one of my first exposures to Beefheart outside of Zappa, and Don just crushes Diddy Wah Diddy to open it. It's only 5 songs, but the whole thing really rocks. It's also a lot more accessible than some of his other stuff. Personally, I like the more "regular rock music" sessions. It's not as mainstream as you might think. The Carrot disc has some stuff that is also on Blue Jeans and
