  1. Like mountain bed, I've never been able to get into the Mayer incarnation. I just don't like the guy or his playing, and I've still given it an honest shot, both on video and audio. All I can say is "ugh." Glad it works for somebody, 'cause it ain't ever gonna work for me. The best post-Jerry incarnation with both Bobby and the drummers that I ever saw was in Tampa in 2003, and that was with Jimmy Herring on lead. I'm going to see him with John McLaughlin the weekend after Thanksgiving, and I'd rather go to that show than any show with Mayer in it. Sorry, Weir!
  2. Hell, yeah, this is just gold to me. I preordered the Being There reissue on faith alone, and I'm already pleased as punch. Imagine if we got it and it was all junky bonus tracks that made us say, "Well, that never should have seen the light of day." Instead, I'm already hearing something I would have listened to throughout the years if I'd had it! I love this period, and I want more stuff like it from the S/T sessions, YHF, and so on. I hope those are in the works.
  3. You must have read it somewhere. All the liner notes indicate is that John plays acoustic guitar on that version...which I always thought odd, but now I understand why.
  4. I had no idea this was penned by John. Been listening to it for almost 20 years. As A-Man mentioned, it was released on Blue Mountain's Homegrown in '97 in (IMHO) much-improved form, with Cary Hudson on vocals and Laurie Stirratt on harmony. My guess is that John brought it to Wilco and they recorded it but ultimately rejected it in favor of It's Just that Simple. Interesting outtake for sure. By the way, I pulled out my old CD copy of Homegrown and there are NO writing credits. Zero!
  5. That's cool. Yeah, I just meant it's too bad there's not a market for a deluxe reissue for Golden Smog the way there is for the Wilco releases. Although you never know. I figured the Being There reissue was a 20th anniversary set until I remembered A.M. and Being There came out in '95 & '96, respectively.
  6. Just resurrecting this thread, as it seems to be the main Golden Smog thread on here. I popped the old Down By the Old Mainstream disc into my car's CD player, and have been listening to it the past couple of days. I remember it mainly for Radio King, Walk Where He Walked and Ill Fated, but it also has a great Tweedy vocal I'd completely forgotten about: She Don't Have to See You. Great tune. Hearing that JT circa 1996 voice gets me excited for the pending Being There reissue. I'd love to see an expanded reissue of the Golden Smog stuff from this era; too bad there's probably not enough of a m
  7. Finished all of Californication and Dexter, and am now on to Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. It’s cute.
  8. He is such a fucking turd. It’s incredibly galling for those of us from the northeast, who have known for 30 years what a turd he is, to see people still defending him. We can’t sink much lower as a country.
  9. Dave's Picks Vol. 24 - 8/25/72 http://www.dead.net/store/special-edition-shops/almanac/daves-picks-volume-24
  10. Say what you will about the ZFT, since Gail's death, they are releasing some awesome shit. Check out this 6-show Halloween '77 set. https://consequenceofsound.net/2017/09/frank-zappas-1977-halloween-residency-to-be-released-as-158-track-costume-box-set/ Sorry, Dweez, I would much rather listen to six Frank shows in 24-bit audio for the rest of my life than go to another Dweezil Covers Frank concert. I won't drop money on the hologram BS, but I need quality versions of these shows.
  11. My guess is that they're figuring two things: 1) CD buyers will rip the discs to iTunes or whatnot to have digital files. 2) Digital only buyers will get them from iTunes. I don't really blame them for not mentioning digital downloads, if that's the case. I searched for both releases in the iTunes store, and the pricing I found makes the (cheaper) digital downloads appealing to me. I'm not buying too many CDs these days either.
  12. Great re-releases. The Troubadour show was my first real introduction to Wilco shows. I got a tape of it around 1999, which was the same year I saw my first Wilco show, so it's always had a special place in my heart. Nice to see it get an official release. It was broadcast on FM radio, so they should have a good pre-FM mix. My iMac doesn't have a CD drive, which just goes to show that discs are rapidly going the way of the dinosaur. For those interested in a digital-only release, the A.M. Deluxe will be on iTunes for $11.99 and Being There Deluxe for $24.99.
  13. Dang, that whole family is so screwed. Gail split them in two, and her death did nothing to reunite them.
  14. I generally prefer SBD. However, the early 80s shows can sound particularly sterile, and Dave L. has mentioned some kick drum issues. I actually switched over to the SBD on this show today after listening to a few tracks from the AUD version. I have the SBD in my iTunes, so it was just easier.
  15. Hard to believe (for me, anyway), but my very first Dead show was 35 years ago today. Grateful Dead at Veterans' Memorial Coliseum on 1982-09-23 SBD: https://archive.org/details/gd1982-09-23.sbd.miller.108973.flac16 AUD: https://archive.org/details/gd82-09-23.sen421.miller.12520.sbeok.shnf I usually give it a spin every few years or so on the anniversary. I was all of 17 at the time, already a pretty demanding concertgoer, having seen Kiss, Aerosmith and a group of lads from merry old England calling themselves The Who. I'd watched these Dead guys perform Casey Jones and Good Lovin'
  16. Thanks, Doug. LOL, Donna! All is well here, too - no damage. I love living in Tampa. Glad we are all safe and sound.
  17. Diehard Cowboys fan, which was rough from about 1996-2015. Stuck in a hotel last night, watching the 'Boys beat the loathsome Giants was a real joy. Looking forward to seeing what they can do this year with that revamped D line.
  18. Thanks guys. We're working our way back over a two-day period, as we drove about eight hours north. To give you an idea of how big and bad this thing still is, even now, we drove through torrential rain and wind today heading from SC down to GA. I've lived in FL for almost 23 years, and we get major heavy thunderstorms with pounding rain every summer...but when you're on the highway doing 70 or 80, you only get blinding rain for a few minutes here and there. This thing went on for miles and miles, and the wind felt like it would blow the car off the road. It was unreal. If that's tropical stor
  19. We hightailed it out of there yesterday. Will start working our way back tomorrow. Good times.
  20. Yeah, I guess there's a big concern about storm surge, flooding, etc. Up in New Tampa, it's more about wind, and I find it kind of weird they haven't even discussed evacuation yet. Governor Skeletor says, "Everyone should be ready to evacuate at a moment's notice." To where? The I-75 parking lot? Or a shelter? Be glad when this is over and we can set sights on Hurricane Jose.
  21. We're still in "watchful waiting" mode here in SW Florida (Tampa). No evacuation order coming down yet, but it's looking pretty dicey. Might have to hit the road, though that will be a parking lot. Stay safe, everyone!
  22. I was lucky enough to see them in '93 when they first got back together. Incredible show. I just played their first seven albums in order a week or so ago, for the first time in a while. This is a bummer indeed.
  23. Was messaging a VC member about FZ Roxy-era recommendations, and I have two: Road Tapes #2 Roxy by Proxy Both available from ZFT now for under $20! Of course, I also recommend the original Roxy album, along with the albums that came out before and after that (Overnite Sensation, Apostrophe, One Size Fits All, etc.)
  24. Fellas, fellas. Everybody take a step back. You'll get this thread locked!
