  1. I just want them to get their asses back to Florida. Next month, Bob Dylan is playing St. Augustine, Clearwater, Sarasota, Fort Myers, Fort Lauderdale, and Orlando. Wilco, by contrast, have not even shown up in the entire state since 2015. That's not a typo. Over three years.
  2. This place might be a good source. No one else seems to have it for a regular price.http://www.hbdirect.com/album/1652497-john-coltrane-john-coltrane-quartet-complete-live-in-stuttgart-1963.html
  3. Do any of you have the Complete Stuttgart 1963 release which came out about 8 or 9 years ago? I've been listening to my Coltrane discs in chronological order (by recording dates, not release dates), and this set is amazing. It's like the bridge between the searching sound of A Love Supreme - which was recorded not long after this show - and the later, more radical avant garde material. The show features a 29-minute Impressions and a 36-minute Mr. P.C., and both are just incendiary. It's not that easy to find online now, because it was an import, and may have fallen out of print. Essential fo
  4. There's a part of me that would love to see this farewell tour, but it's not going to happen. I'm lucky in that I saw Elton several times in the past few years, so I'm a bit in the "been there, done that" category. The other aspect of it is that the local arena show sold out quickly, and now the only tickets available are those being resold on Ticketmaster, and they start at $340. I love Elton, but that's not doable...plus I saw him about four years ago and paid like $100 for a 4th row seat. And, right on time, here's the set list and review. Looks like Indian Sunset is the real rarity. Deep
  5. I caught the 2003 Dead/Dylan tour on the Tampa stop. I always tell the story about the sound in that venue: for years, it was called the Ice Palace, and people commonly referred to it as the Echodome. Typical hockey rink arena, not built for sound. Whenever you went to a show there, you never knew how bad it would be, because a sound man wouldn't necessarily be able to overcome the limitations of the building. Dylan came out for that show and it was horrible. His energy was fine, and the band was great, but the sound was probably the worst I've heard in that venue. Then there was a break. Th
  6. You are correct, sir! Also, a recording of one of those nights found its way online - and the taper had captured the sound check as well. McCartney played some old cover tunes like Blue Suede Shoes and Midnight Special, so it was fun to hear what I’d “missed” in addition to the show I actually saw.
  7. This is a great topic, and I love the discussion. Kudos to all of you for keeping it so civil - so far. (Ha!) I have to say that, for me, it does indeed depend on the artist and even the cost of the ticket. For example, I can remember seeing Wilco three times in one week in Florida in 2002, and they were really still on the YHF tour. There were quite a few of those same great YHF songs every night. That didn't bother me one bit, of course, as it's a top 3 Wilco release for me. The other songs in the setlist were somewhat varied, including an early version of Handshake - with no solo, since i
  8. Very sobering, and disheartening, assessment from John Dean here: https://www.rollingstone.com/politics/politics-news/watergate-john-dean-why-trump-will-survive-russia-scandal-2-700723/ "I doubt Trump will be forced from office, even if Mueller has tapes of him talking with Putin about how to rig the election. While we might have a Democratic House after the 2018 elections, which could impeach Trump, I do not see the needed 67 votes in the Senate to find him guilty and remove him from office. And given the fact he is shameless, he will never resign."
  9. 46 years ago today: 7/18/72, Roosevelt Stadium, Jersey City, NJ Saw a post from Scott about this on Facebook and it reminded today was the anniversary of the show. My all-time favorite of the shows that have not been released. Many Deadheads consider first sets to be just warmups, and "all the action" is in the 2nd set - meaning a long psychedelic jam in a Dark Star, Other One, etc. Not me. I'm a songs guy. I love the Garcia/Hunter catalog, and I love it when Bobby is fired up as well. This show's first set is not to be missed. Killer versions of Me and My Uncle (!), Bird Song, and Black-T
  10. My wife is Thai, so we were especially pleased that the first four boys got out today. Nice to see some good news on the feed for a change!
  11. You are correct. No alternate takes or repeats on the main disc. Bonus for the fanatics: the “deluxe” 2-disc version is only 4 bucks extra right now!
  12. All of this. Yes. I just found this today, thanks to a Rolling Stone link to an article about it. I swore I wouldn't indulge in another McCartney show, after having seen him four times in my life...all since 2010. I wanted to make sure that the last time I ever saw him live, it wasn't too poignant. But the first thing I did after I finished watching that clip was look to see if there were any tour dates. (There aren't.) I may have to go again, if given the chance. Either way, I feel like every Paul show I've seen has been a gift.
  13. Cheap Tric Caught them twice opening for bigger bands, both within the last decade or so. Both times, their sound system was remarkably inferior to the headliners - which I have since learned is (supposedly) a somewhat common practice with classic rock dinosaur acts. I mean, I was never a big fan, but come on: Surrender, Dream Police, I Want You To Want Me...who wouldn't want to see these guys? And they were beyond a disappointment. Not only was the sound crappy, but I couldn't understand a word of their songs, aside from the ones I already knew. I was relieved when they were done. If I
  14. That would be the Joel Selvin book: https://www.amazon.com/Fare-Thee-Well-Chapter-Grateful/dp/0306903059
  15. My last show was 9/13/91. Kind of a bummer to miss that.I heard a lot of Coltrane influence in Zappa’s guitar work when I first got turned on to jazz...the way Trane attacked his instrument in those live Europe shows, seemingly with such fury.
  16. I've been on a budget, so I didn't spring for this, but my Coltrane obsession did cause me to seek out (and find) an mp3 download of it. It's great stuff.
  17. Interesting! I've had that Ole disc for years, but never got into it that much. I had no idea Freddie Hubbard was on there. As good as the Village Vanguard and Birdland recordings are, I still love Afro Blue Expressions the most, and the other material that can be found on the Live In Europe box. It is not as well recorded, but I actually like that aspect of it. Somehow the Village and much of the Birdland material feels too closely miked for me. I don't mind the stuff sounding like it was recorded in 1961 or 1962 if that's when it was recorded.
  18. I have to be in a very particular mindset for the latter era, but I have that one (of course!), and it’s radical for sure. I also recommend Alice Coltrane’s Ptah the El Daoud and Journey in Satchidananda. They came out after John was gone, but are certainly in the same spirit.
  19. Yeah, I love that clip. That band was magic. The whole Live Trane European Tours box just slays me. Some of the late era stuff has a bit too much honking and squawking fo listen to often. But Meditations, Transition, and of course, Love Supreme are all remarkable.
  20. So, I don't know, I did a search for Coltrane here and found random threads but no Coltrane thread. I couldn't even see where Louie's massive jazz thread is archived, so I thought it wouldn't hurt to start a thread on Trane. The reason is the newly-discovered material coming out, which contains previously unheard compositions. They have track listings like "Untitled Original 11383," because they were never assigned names as far as can be determined. Here is a posting with one of the tracks: http://www.openculture.com/2018/06/hear-the-first-track-from-john-coltranes-lost-album.html Coltrane
  21. Too rich for my blood. I’ll live with the 800+ shows I have already, which include all of these. I wonder if they'll make the digital files available indefinitely like they have with the most recent May '77 box.
  22. There is a listing on Amazon UK, but no official announcements yet: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07DKRPFX7
  23. You guys are a great audience!
