Mr. Heartbreak replied to lost highway's topic in Tongue-Tied Lightning
I might be the only one on here who watched part of that debate last night, then. A couple years back, I was really into following politics; now I'm so busy, I've barely kept up. I tuned in for about 45 minutes, starting from the beginning. It started out pretty nasty and went downhill rapidly. I shut it off, feeling like I don't like either of them personally very much. Way too negative and lacking the urbanity and calmness that made Obama so appealing after 8 years of Dubya. POTUS will be missed. -
Not trying to fan any flames here. Just passing along a CRB update. http://registerguard.com/rg/entertainment/34235966-67/let-it-grow-chris-robinson-brotherhood-nurtures-organically-sourced-music.html.csp# If the Black Crowes fans/CRB haters would prefer that I start a separate thread for them, just say the word.

I love Zimmy, but I can't get any enthusiasm going for these releases. I saw Tempest at a flea market last weekend, but just couldn't justify the purchase to myself. Maybe if I got it for free.

Where is all this "evidence" of which you speak? Is there a deposition? Do we have an independent study? I saw CR in concert tonight and a woman next to me told me she tried checking out a Rich Robinson show. It was in a tiny club, a small crowd, and she's an old Deadhead about my age. St. Rich looked right at her and said, "I'm not going to play any of that hippie bullshit tonight." She was mortified. He then went on to bad mouth his brother to the audience. So I guess these guys are not exactly models of superb behavior, are they? I'm no Crowes expert, but I know enough to be aware that Adam

Fool's Paradise festival with Lettuce, Chris Robinson, Neal Casal, Ivan Neville, and a bunch of other people.

I don't mind! To be honest, I have "first listen" syndrome: the first versions I hear always stick in my head as being the best ones...even sloppy live versions like the early Throwing>Stones.
-
I like the Dead best when it sounds like they're playing a well -rehearsed piece. I was amazed when I discovered that not every China>Rider sounds like Europe '72. Why not play it that way every time? It's just exactly perfect!

What about Legion of Mary?

I actually am such a Jerry-head that I often get into JGB shows more than some of the Dead material I own. But I think it's because I favor the Jerry songs and also find the consistency of the musicianship in the JGB to be more enjoyable. The Dead were absolute magic when they were firing on all eight cylinders and improvising beautifully...but there were also a hell of a lot of train wrecks, as winterland mentioned: flubbed lyrics, brutal transitions, and off-key/out-of-tune vocals from a variety of offenders over the years! Whereas the Jerry bands tend to sound pretty consistent to me. I s

I don't know. All the hearsay seems to be stacked up against one guy, which makes me suspicious. I think if I were in a band with my brother, and he sided with other band members against me, I would be inclined to be "a dick" to all of them...especially my brother. That doesn't seem right to me. I do find the idea of a drummer being irreplaceable to be kind of funny. No offense to any drummers. His comment about "add a private education and a boatload of artistic pretense" sounds pretty dickish to me. You're right about CR's voice, no doubt about it. No middle aged man should be expected to

I've never been a huge Crowes fan, so as I said a year ago, I don't really have a dog in the hunt. And as I said back then, I would take everything the parties involve say with a huge grain of salt...including CR. I guess I just don't understand the vitriol, probably because I'm not a big Crowes fan. Just listened to part of that interview: first Gorman says how appreciative he is to everyone involved with the band (which would, presumably, include CR). Then he goes into: "Rock singers, at the end of the day, they all share certain traits." "Singers are nuts." "Add a boatload of artistic p

For me, the Garcia/Hunter songbook is why Jerry was the king of the Dead, so to speak. I mean, imagine a band whose repertoire consists of Picasso Moon, We Can Run and Pride of Cucamonga.

I just watched that video, having only seen a short clip from it before. That is laugh out loud funny, and the comments section is priceless. Cruz is such a Santorum...in the urban dictionary sense. -

So how many of our VC brothers and sisters outside of the US are watching this thing play out and scared to death by the prospect of Trump? -
Listening to 11/15/72 for the first time. Really nice Bird Song (of course), and a Playin' that clocks in at 31:41. Daaaaaamnnnnn.

It's a lot older: Jimmy Reed tune from the 50s. He did Big Boss Man, too.

Been dipping my toe back into '69 this week, as I have so many shows I've downloaded that I haven't gotten to yet. Interesting SBD available from 5/7 that has an instrumental (!) on it...sounds familiar, like the way they would sometimes do Finicula Finicula or a theme from something else, but longer. Anyone hear this show or know what that tune is? https://archive.org/details/gd69-05-07.sbd.cotsman.6028.sbeok.shnf

Going to see Chris in a couple weeks here: http://www.foolsparadisefl.com Should be a unique, fun musical event.

But he probably would have snorted up all the coke. -
Well, I like some of the early Dark Stars that are about 10-12 minutes long, but I like 'em even shorter, too. The ones that go on for 30-40 minutes in a long, formless jam tend to lose me. As much of a Deadhead as I am, I'm a song guy more than a jamband guy. I love those '71-'73 shows that have like 30 songs, from Loser to Playin' to Mr. Charlie. When I see a setlist for a show and it's mainly just Dark Star>St. Stephen>The Eleven>Feedback, I think, "Oh, another one of those."
