Wow, I'm a little stunned at this post from RS and the email we got from Wilco HQ. I'm dying to know what the other 3 songs they got to hear were.

My Country Has Disappeared. Now that's a great song title. That song to me shows the most promise out of what I've heard so far. Very John Lennon in my ears.

I seem to remember reading about Deeper Down being played somewhere. I don't think this has surfaced yet has it ?

I really like all of the new songs that they have been playing. Can't wait until June.

  2. Hey Analogman,

Do you have room for a new friend who also likes A Man And A Woman? It isn't my favorite song, but when I heard what U2 was doing in between records using Middle Eastern styles supposedly I immediately thought of this song. It definitely is more memorable than something like Trip Through Your Wires.

I felt no immediate need to buy the remasters. I fell foolishly for the Complete U2 on iTunes which is pretty big in term of tunes but there's still a lot of stuff that's missing. I don't quite remember what. I'll probably pick them up now that I'm "back into" U2.

Norbs...Dahooey!, I also love Pop. Gone is one of my all time favorite U2 songs. No idea why they rerecorded it for the 1990-2000 Best Of other than money reasons.

Thanks MattZ! I am more than well aware that a lot of people don't like U2. It doesn't bother me. I feel the same way about the Red Hot Chili Peppers for instance. I respect them but I don't like their music. I only know their radio songs, so I guess some people only know U2's radio songs and don't know of the U2 album tracks. I guess the same goes for RHCP. Maybe someday I'll ask a friend to burn me a cd of RHCP. Also, I love Elvis Costello. Pretty obvious U2 "borrowed" Pump It Up for Get On Your Boots.

Jcroach, I'm used to the Bono sucks threads and jokes around some of my friends. We even joke around that Bono is the Anti Christ and when he met the Pope it was pretty funny in that context. To be honest I'd rather hear Jeff Tweedy talk to an audience than Bono. Seeing U2 nights in a row you definitely know that all of his speeches are all rehearsed. Which is a shame.

Solace, don't feel bad. It's just the fricken internet and the lack of knowing context and intent and interpretation. Being a Communications (film concentration) major we spent a whole semester on this sort of stuff. Think Seinfeld/Curb Your Enthusiasm in a class. No problem man.

Sorry if I'm rambling but I just spent close to 3 hours learning about spyware/malware. My dad's PC got infected and I had to fix it. It feels good to be away from that.

But in closing I think the masterpiece comment was based off of me not hearing U2 since early 2006. ATYCLB is a great cd, but certain songs come off better live than on cd. Elevation and Stuck In A Moment are 2 examples. Atomic Bomb seemed to have more going for it I think. And NLOTH just clicked like I said. It hit me like a brick. Like Azzurrri was kind of saying, it is respectable for a band like U2 to put out a record like this this late in their career. I wasn't even thinking about U2 until I heard that Get On Your Boots was going to be released on MLK day. Has this happened for anyone else and a particular band where you escape from them for a long time and than when you hear their new record it's like Oh shit!

Makes me want to try and go cold turkey on Wilco until their next record comes out but it won't happen. I love listening to their bootlegs too much. One of the big differences with U2 is you know where the "different" song will show up in the set and there's just no spontaneity in their live shows. Bands like Wilco, Pearl Jam, Radiohead, and R.E.M. are just more fun to follow live because they'll play anything.

  3. Hey Solace,

No offense taken. I'm not a troll here. I usually post in the Just A Fan and After The Show sections. The last breaking news item I dropped was that I Must Be High was going to be on a soundtrack. :P I rarely get involved in the Someone Else's Song part of this message board. I was tempted to jump in on the Ryan Adams posts but avoided temptation.

I've had the u2roolz screen name since 1994. I haven't changed it for memory reasons. Of course that didn't fully work out because I forgot my password on the @U2 and Interference forums! lol....I haven't been on those message boards since 2005. I think they run it like Dime A Dozen now, you need to be OKed to be let in. I tried to get in around MLK day to discuss Get On Your Boots and haven't heard back. So I haven't had anywhere to post about this record. I was a little surprised that VC had a topic on it.

PS Going to look at an Iron Maiden forum to see what they're up to.

  4. Hey,

I don't know what the "lol" was referring to, but who knows. A few posts back I saw Solace pick out the 2nd-4th singles. So I'm assuming he's also a U2 fan.

I think he was laughing at my saying Bono was actually singing. Either way all is cool.

  5. Hey All,

I listened to it again today and it is an amazing record in my opinion. Fearless. Exciting. Pushing the envelope. Expanding the U2 myth.

Everything just clicks. The melodies, chord changes, arrangements, backing vocals, The Edge's solos, Bono's vocals (he's actually singing again and not speaking the lyrics). A real grower. In my ears and eyes a real masterpiece. Simply blown away!

    Thanks,

  6. Hello,

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. It's an odd time to choose to go back and play stadiums. I mean I get the chew and screw concept of it. 1 night instead of 3.

But they had trouble with Zooropa trying to translate it live. I have a couple of bootlegs and the song sounds ok live but it starts at the "And I have no compass...".

They only played Zooropa 3 times, Babyface 5 times (which somehow kind of worked, took the place of Tryin To Throw Your Arms Around The World as female audience participation), they actually I think tried Stay (Faraway, So Close) full band electric only a couple of shows and than went to the acoustic version that's on ZooTV Live From Sydney. Although, they somehow managed to pull off Dirty Day (which was amazing), Daddy's Gonna Pay For Your Crashed Car, and Lemon all 3 of which weren't played until they hit Australia/Japan for the last 5 shows or so of the Zooropa/Zoomerang tour. So the point I'm making is that the bulk of the Zooropa 1993 tour was mostly like the Outside Broadcast/ZooTV shows of 1992. With the exception of the Mirror Ball Man being out in 1993 and being replaced by Mr. MacPhisto. I remember the opening of PopMart in Las Vegas being a somewhat disaster. They could never get Staring At The Sun right with the full band plugged in so they stripped it down and it sounds better acoustic. But on the last 2 tours they've pulled off the new songs beautifully, although this record I think will break that run. I don't know if I'd rather have them tour with Eno/Lanois or settle for U2 performing NLOTH just as a 4 piece.

I can't wait to see what Wilco's record sounds like in the spring/summer. Could this be the year that both U2 and Wilco end up on Year End lists? I personally think that Wilco is more that suitably capable of taking down U2 in a better album this year.

    Thanks,

    Kristofor

  7. Hey All,

I came home last night and I was shocked to hear this strange/conspiratorial news about the leak. I waited an hour online waiting for a PM.

I listened to the album for the 1st time at 415am. It really moved me and blew me away. Not one song is weak in my opinion.

If I were to rank the last 3 records I'd probably put All That You Can't Leave Behind 3rd and Atomic Bomb and Horizon in a close picture perfect finish.

I've kept my U2roolz screen name for VC to show that even a once die hard well let's put it this way when U2 goes on a 4 year hiatus I usually venture elsewhere for music. One of those places I ventured was here in Wilco land ( circa 2003 lol). Friends dropped jaws when I told them that a certain band blew U2 out of the water. Well, that was before these friends saw Wilco live and bought their records. So I guess I wear that nomenclature of U2roolz as a reminder that I still love U2 even if they only come around once every election year. But as a tipoff that a once U2 fanatic who captured all their bootlegs and has seen them 16 times over 3 tours can switch camps into Wilco's fan community. I guess a bit of Bono's megalomania rubbed off on me thinking that people would go why is this guy U2roolz on a VC message board. But here's the thing : I love it here and feel/see the love for Wilco and their unique brand of generosity amongst the usual. Over at the U2 forums there seems to be a negative vibe. Fans were bashing the record already based off of 2 songs. Obviously they are entitled to their opinion and I'd be upset if I looked forward to a new record every 4 years and was a little bit let down. I'm aware of the people who don't like Sky Blue Sky and I get their gripe but well what can you do ?

    Thanks,

    Kristofor

PS I feel that the U2 and the Wilco concert experiences are both completely different and I wouldn't give up either. I'm lucky to have seen them as much as I have. I've lost count of Wilco so...I should figure that out...(checked it out .... 15 times from 2003-2008 and one Jeff Tweedy and one Autumn Defense show)

  8. Unless of course you have prostate or constipation issues and you can hear Jeff screaming Nothing ! Nothing ! etc.

Wow, that'd be pretty funny in a way. Or going into an electronics store and they just ran out of Nintendo Wii's and you hear Nothing ! Nothing ! etc.

    LOL.

I don't take bathroom breaks during this song.

    Thanks,

    Kristofor

  9. Hey VCers,

Surprised quite a few of you loved the Eugene 9-4-03 show as much as I do. So in keeping with the 2003 shows, I finally took advantage of Owlandbear and can't thank those guys enough for having such a fucking awesome site.

I now just added 2 more shows from 2003:

4-21-03 the first 2003 show in the US at Otto's. Which is almost a year before the 2004 new lineup was introduced.

I haven't listened to it yet, but the show opens with At Least That's What You Said and Company In My Back. Also of importance is New Madrid and Kicking Television. But the real highlight looks to be the Handshake Drugs-Not For The Season combo. :stunned

5-01-03 a show I kept hearing about on here and now I can't wait to listen. The Orange Peel in Asheville, NC is the place and what a show they got.

Opening with One By One than Sunken Treasure than Less Than You Think than doing I Am Trying To Break Your Heart sans the typical opening. :cheekkiss

Bob Dylan's 49th Beard, When The Roses Bloom Again, Pick Up The Change and More Like The Moon. WTF! :worship

Also, a pretty early Theologians I think. And I love those close to 10 minute Not For The Season. They need to do that this year. Let Nels rip that up.

    Thanks,

    Kristofor

PS I think i'm getting into the 2003 shows because I have so few of them. The ones that I have I love like Eugene, Boston, Pittsburgh, and Philadelphia.

PPS Thanks again to Owlandbear. I had a hard time downloading with a Mac, but once I found out the easy way to do it I realized this could get dangerous. Ha.

  10. Hey VCers,

I LOVE A.M. - the way that the 2nd half of the album jumped out at me at some point in time and made the whole seem well whole.

Yeah, the track order makes for an exciting listen. The first couple of songs all sound/seem radio friendly than the rest lay the ground work for what Wilco continues to be. There are gems throughout this cd. I think there's also a bit of a fascination with it amongst people who got into Wilco around YHF. The odds of hearing something off of A.M. live are slim. I've only heard Passenger Side live and wished I was at the 2008 Winter Residency to have caught these songs. In fact, I made an iTunes playlist from those shows to make my own A.M. live.

    Kristofor

PS Keep in mind though that this may be near the bottom of Wilco records in my favorites. Ha.

  11. Hey,

I finally found in my closet the 9/4/03 Eugene, OR show. It is pretty amazing! Excellent sound and quite the setlist.

Including an extra long At Least That's What You Said (7:15), Handshake Drugs (More Like The Moon version w/ Janet from Sleater Kinney), the Holy Trinity of Cars Can't Escape/How To Fight Loneliness/Not For The Season (9:30), Spiders (2002/2003 version), and a final encore of I'm Always In Love, Casino Queen, Outtasite (Outta Mind), Kicking Television, & I'm A Wheel. Oh and also early in the set: Should've Been In Love and Box Full Of Letters.

    Amazing!

    Thanks,

    Kristofor

PS I'm pretty sure this is on Owl & The Bear. Good luck.

  12. Hey VCers,

The Tweedy Northampton show tix went on sale just as I suspected at midnight. The double letters appear to be gone and so are most of rows A-K. I got two aisle seats in Row L.

Hopefully you guys luck out by checking this shit out tonight!!

    Thanks,

    Kristofor

  13. Hey,

I also met Jeff after the Calvin show. I am now looking at the photo on my wall. I laugh every time I look at the (what must be the backstage) door in the picture. It looks like it has a DHARMA Logo (for you Lost fans out there). So I always chuckle that Jeff Tweedy is somehow tied into Lost because of that door and because there's a disembodied arm holding an umbrella to cover him from the rain. I think it was Tony Margherita's arm. Plus, my friend pointed out that Tweedy reminds him of the Wizard in Wizard of Oz and at the time Lost introduced Henry Gale who later turned out to be Ben Linus (the "man" behind the curtain). Also, Jeff had on a cool white baseball cap with a bug on it. I'm pretty sure that's a Wilco hat. Wonder if he paid for it.

    Thanks,

    Kristofor

PS I'll try scanning the pic.

  14. Hey Three Dollars,

Sorry about that. Hmm. I'm pretty sure someone on here was the guy who yelled out Gun during that Tweedy solo show in 2005. Oh well.

Maybe i'll see you in March. Not that I have any idea who you are. :dontgetit But enjoy the show!

    Kristofor

  15. Hey All,

The question I pose - is it better to wait for the public onsale for the Calvin? I love buying tix through them since you can choose your seats.

I remember getting on at 12am midnight when they were supposed to go onsale at 10am or 12noon back in 2005 and got 2 seats 1st row dead center.

Somehow this is a common occurrence from what I hear. Anyways, I am very excited that there's a Tweedy solo show to look forward to. I was thinking about that when I went to Wilco/Neil Young last month. I sensed there'd be solo shows to hold us over until the record comes out.

    Thanks,

    Kristofor

  16. Hey Everyone,

I was looking up soundtracks on iTunes and noticed that there was a soundtrack for He's Just Not That Into You. Somehow that title doesn't sound right when spoke out loud. Anyways, I noticed Wilco's I Must Be High was on the soundtrack. I was surprised considering all the other tracks they could have taken for this romantic comedy.

Also on the soundtrack is My Morning Jacket's I'm Amazed, Talking Head's This Must Be The Place, The Black Crowes' By Your Side, R.E.M.'s Supernatural Superserious, The Cure's Friday I'm In Love, and Keane's Somewhere Only We Know amongst others.

In stranger personal news, I was just making myself an iTunes February playlist. I put both This Must Be The Place,Friday I'm In Love and the Human League's Don't You Want Me in the playlist and was weirded out to see these songs on this particular soundtrack. The Wilco tune I put on was On And On And On.

    Thanks,

    Kristofor

PS He's Just Not That Into You arrives in theaters on Feb. 6th

  17. One Wing.

What's that political line about the government is like a bird it only works when both wings are healthy. If one wing gets too weak or strong it will fly in circles and eventually crash. Something like that.

I heard it's about that bird nicknamed One Wing after living with one wing and still flying around.

But I do like listening to the song now with that political line in my head. It gives the song some more depth.

Also, it's weird that this and Impossible Germany have a similar guitar solo at the end.

I always thought of Impossible Germany of a song about communication between 2 lovers, but never really cared to wonder about "Impossible Germany, Unlikely Japan." Anyone here think that this is a reference to World War II and the roles that Germany and Japan played.

    Thanks,

    Kristofor

  18. Yeah, I am pretty excited too. I was at home looking for some Twitter updates since I was bored and kind of run down. I don't know when to expect reviews for this show to roll in on VC. Not sure how many people on here are from Nova Scotia.

I found this guy's page that has a pic of the stage setup.

    http://twitpic.com/p2oa

    Sorry twitter dude. Thank google.

Anyways, I think the most exciting thing for me is to obviously finally get to see Neil Young on what is being heralded as a real return to form type of show.

Close second is that Wilco is opening the show in Worcester, MA. Now I read some reviews that Everest plays a relatively short opening set and that Death Cab For Cutie played 50 minutes. So the obvious need to know here is "how long will Wilco play for and will there be any Neil/Wilco duets."

I mean hey 50 minutes is pretty generous and just enough to make you want some more. Not to mention this is quite a double bill that for me at least hasn't quite sunk in.

    Thanks,

    Kristofor

PS I'd like to see how they pull off the whole Glenn thing too. Maybe they have some technology stolen from Star Trek where they can beam him in. :D

  19. Hey Everyone Again,

Wow. I really really like the song on the 25th a lot more now that I have listened to the song and have kind of understood the lyrics while reading them.

I picture the song set with the Spanish Conquistadors. Sounds crazy, but the sound and lyrics provoke images of The Fountain.

Although, of course the song can obviously be set in modern times. Anyways, it is quite brilliant. What a hook and the instrumentation is awesome. Can't wait to hear this with the band plugged in.

Hopefully, some more of you out there can shed light on this song's lyrics. I tried my best and it is a bit long and repetitive.

  20. Hey Everyone,

I noticed someone posted a lyric request. I don't usually like doing these things especially considering these songs have only been played once.

Case in point : I don't know if anyone noticed or bothered to post it but the Sunny Feeling lyrics on the 08-04 show are different in the 2nd verse. I'm not sure if Jeff forgot them and just made them up which is what it sounds like. He kind of rushes through the 2nd verse after the 1st chorus.

Anyways, the new song on October 26th I really love and tried to decipher the lyrics. I would like any additional help you can offer in this song. There's a few parts that I just can't quite make it out. As always we tend to really embrace or dislike something that's new from a band. I tend to keep listening to these new songs a lot since it's a breath of fresh air and makes the classics that much better when one returns to them.

    Wilco - October 26th, 2008

  21. Hey Everyone,

    I love Wilco The Song.

I finally remembered what it reminded me of.

The Cure's Never Enough. Especially the music and playfulness of the song. The Greatest Hits version more than the one off Mixed Up.

Anyone else think of this song ?

Otherwise, very glad that they did it today in WI.

    Thanks,

    Kristofor
