I'll Fight - Hmm. I'm trying to think of a certain philosophy that was brought up when The Thin Red Line came out in 1999. I remember there was confusion over which actor was which soldier because the 3 leads were relative unknowns. But there was a lengthy article about how that was deliberate to show that in war every man/woman is pretty much the same since they are dressed alike. There's a certain sense of anonymity and losing your identity.
So in reference to the song, I think the idea that I keep toying around with is the point that when all is said and done it really didn't matter who went to war in the first place anyways. Both people would maybe end up dead possibly not being able to be identified either. Almost like the irony that in such a situation someone could actually "sell" or "buy" their way into a war for some reason. I don't know how that would work with the draft.
But it does also sound like a class struggle. Both men apparently have separate motivations. I'm sure each has a woman they're doing it for too. But one woman will be a widow because her situation is most likely in the poor class.
So I guess what I'm trying to get around to is this: if guy dies and can't be identified than there's great tragedy in that he did it for nothing and obtaining a burying place was a waste. Except for his love whom I am sure is set now. Romantic.

Speed Racer,
I like your idea about Bull Black Nova. It's interesting when I have panic attacks, I want to abandon my body sometime. Awful feeling.
So I think the idea that the song is kind of set in a car that is known as a muscle car for speeding makes sense. Almost like running away from yourself or your problems. In fact, the song does kind of sound like what a car chase or rather speeding away from nothing would sound like. There's definitely a feeling of stuff catching up to the song narrator in the lyrics and melody. Bernard Herrmann would be proud.
There's also hints of either hypochondria or really hurting yourself in the lyrics.

PS BTW, what was your exact relapse you had in mind ?
Edit: 2 things that I forgot to mention.
1. I think I hear Keep Calm or Pick Up (like listed in the lyrics section) at the end.
2. I mean this in the best way possible...doesn't Bull Black Nova feel much longer than it is?

I'll Fight - To me the song is so good that it has a different meaning every time I play it.
I think the repeated part is sort of a tongue in cheek "brainwashing" reference either from a soldier's or lover's perception. People being trained to kill for love of their country or for the love of a lover or both.
I still think I hear "I'll vote" in the first 30 seconds of the song. Which makes it even more interesting.
But all of that being said I still think the underlying sentiment is very heartfelt. Like some have mentioned along the same lines as say When The Roses Bloom Again or At My Window Sad & Lonely.

So does anyone have any ideas or suspicions about what songs on this album will get the Please Be Patient With Me and Leave Me Like You Found Me treatment in concert? I can't think of any. I think everything has a good shot of being played and rotated. I am interested to see how they pull off Deeper Down live.
I guess for me the three songs I can't wait to hear live or on a boot that hopefully surfaces over the next month: Bull Black Nova, Everlasting, Deeper Down.
It'll be interesting to see how far apart they keep Spiders and Bull Black Nova from each other in the sets. Or maybe not at all.
That being said, I'm really super excited now to see Wilco in July with 11 amazing songs to look forward to hearing.

Wow!
I'll admit at first listen in my room with the sound not too loud, I was a bit let down. In fact, the song that I loved the first time around was Solitaire. I didn't get to appreciate Bull Black Nova on first listen.
But than I got into my car at 2a.m. and drove around. That's when this album really hit me.
I know for me Deeper Down was really a WTF moment. Where most bands, imo, would put this near the end of a record, Wilco puts it 2nd. But I've listened to this song the 2nd most out of all the others. I love the lyrics and music. I can't wait to read the lyrics. Some of the lyrics get washed out. Hell Is Chrome, in that same 2nd slot, had a similar effect on me on first listen. But now that's one of my favorites.
I'm glad that One Wing was shortened. I was a bit surprised by the layered vocals in the middle coming out of the solo. It'll be interesting to see if this one gets extended in concert like the Lollapalooza version which I like just as much.
Bull Black Nova
I'll say this, the first time I thought I was listening to Funkytown or Safety Dance but in the best way possible. LOL. Also, Jeff gives Peter Steele a run for his money on writing lyrics apparently about killing one's girlfriend. Must have listened to this one at least 20 times or more. Every time it gets better. The song reaches levels of intensity on record that I can't imagine where they'll take this song live. I picture Via Chicago and this being roommates on this tour as a very interesting 1-2 punch.
It was a brilliant decision to follow a song with themes that Bull Black Nova has with You And I. I laughed. Beautiful song. Definitely that moment where you go "how can this be on the same album let alone from the same band."
When I first heard Country Disappeared it reminded me of John Lennon. It still maintains some of that while going in a different direction too.
Solitaire- I had no clue how this would sound with the band after hearing this solo. But it works oh so well. The strumming and everything going on is amazing.
I love the feel of I'll Fight. I really enjoyed this along w/ Country Disappeared from the Bridge School Benefits. Someone awhile back mentioned an older song from the 50s/60s that reminded them of I'll Fight. I definitely hear a lot of eras going on in this.
Sunny Feeling is the most fun song and best singalong of the bunch. Even if the lyrics are hard to keep up with or rather decipher. One live version I have from last August it sounded like Jeff was making up lyrics. It sounds like that here. But once again in the best possible way. Sonny Corleone music video in the wings?
Everlasting is just gorgeous. Another song I had no idea how'd it end up.
Overall, I'm very satisfied and I am still left with that great feeling that you know this love affair is in its early stages. There's stuff to be discovered on each listen type of feeling. I loved Sky Blue Sky on first listen and still love it. But I tend to listen to the live versions more often. I really can't wait to hear how these grow in a live setting and which songs become fan favorites.
It's great being a Wilco fan right now,
Kristofor
PS Speed Racer and Sir Stewart and anyone else that loves a great driving song--You can add Bull Black Nova to that list. Definitely, going to get some tickets for playing that one.

I just finished putting together a 15 slide Power Point presentation and am ready for Grad School to finish. This is so amazingly perfect now. Wow.
Extremely Surprised!
I'll keep trying on the net. If I find I'll forward my PM to someone else.

Please Be Patient With Me sounds like a good mantra at this church.
I was thinking of how many people I peddled Wilco to in the past. One such friend called me a Wilco Peddler. LOL.
7 people. 1 liked them but didn't follow through or something like that. Although he did go see them once. But all 7 have seen Wilco and came away blown away.
But yeah at least half of them have gone to that place where they seek all Wilco music and do that on their own and don't have me make them live cds or album mixes.
It's nice to be able to share this band with people close to me.

PS Yeah, every time I leave a Wilco show it is pretty amazing. I feel like I can take on King Kong. I'd probably be eaten by him but oh well. For someone who has never done drugs or even drinks, I'd take my Wilco high any day. In fact, I think it's safe to say and maybe it isn't said enough: thanks to all the tapers out there who have really helped created this "culture" of Wilco. I don't know if I can say I'd love them as much without having countless bootlegs to play whenever I want.

I saw Elvis Costello solo when he toured with Bob Dylan 2 years ago. It's safe to say that Elvis Costello stole the show in my eyes and ears.

Lyrics to You Are My Face.
-
Dark Helmet: I am your father's brother's nephew's cousin's former roommate.
Lone Starr: What's that make us?
Dark Helmet: Absolutely nothing! Which is what you are about to become.
I always think of this when I hear that line in You Are My Face! Lol.

RE: Wilco (The Album)
Maybe Wilco's new album is buried under a giant W?
Look, why don't we just start digging for it?
-
Nice Cover!
There seems to be a recent trend with having animals on the covers.
MA 2: that cat
AGIB: an egg presumably from a chicken
SBS: a flock of birds
W(TA): a camel
Does anyone fear a lawsuit in 8 years where all these animals come together to sue for royalties?
We'd like to call to the stand the creepy Summerteeth guy?
These Marina Towers don't talk.

Ari Gold is the first thing that popped into my mind when One Wing and Speed Racer talked about someone on their cell phone.
The Stay Puft Marshmallow Man is the first thing that that popped into Ray Stantz' mind when thinking about the last thing that could hurt NYC.

(Maybe Jim actually took my advice.)
Wow, talk about being delusional. This is one of the first Pitchfork reviews I've read in full. This guy sounds like he seriously thinks that musicians actually take what he says into thought on their next album. He really seems like he thinks he's as powerful on a level as a Fox News or CNN.

I used to be a movie snob somewhat. I went through a period where I hated everything that I saw. About 3 years or so ago, I lightened up. I tend to avoid any movie reviews nowadays. I've spent enough time on this planet to know what I should tend to see and what I should run away from (miley cyrus).
Music is a bit of a different thing altogether. I tend to rely on friends and friends of friends to hear about new bands or older artists I may have missed while bingeing on The Clash. Yeah, some of those friends may be influenced by Pitchfork, Rolling Stone and whatever publication shapes minds. But like a few of you, I get angry when people jump off the bandwagon of any band almost as if it has a 2 year period where it's cool. We tend to live in a very fickle environment where American Idol is one of the top rated shows. (spending some minutes to think of what to say next)...
I respect you if you like what you like. At least you have some emotional connection with any art than I can respect you. We may disagree on bands, movies, etc but somewhere we're all kind of the same with our own arsenal of such art forms.
I guess I get upset when people treat things as throw away items. As if that's the way they were brought up, music and movies are no different to them than getting an ice cream sandwhich. Which in some cases that's all that some "bands"and "singers" are to music execs. But if you bring young people up on shit movies and music than you kind of need a big brother or big sister to lead them in a way. While I think Pitchfork may be a somewhat good alternative, it may lead some of these types of folk to band jump by following everything that Pitchfork seems to write about. I don't know. But from working at a movie theater in the past, I can definitely say that 90% of the customers were between 12-20ish.

PS Too busy with grad school papers to fully flesh out my thoughts. That's all I got for now.
Edit: I should point out that a very close friend of mine turned me onto Wilco in 2002/03. I still don't know where he found or heard about them. Ok, he told me Rolling Stone.

I think when I hear that song hopefully this summer, I'll laugh thinking of these new lyrics.

I couldn't find any of those funny Naked Gun (Dodger game umpired by Frank Drebin) mailman/dog and Jewish/Palestinian shaking hands/hugging pictures.

Edit: Guys if you're out there leak the album. So we can argue about that.

Hey,
I myself like Sir Stewart and Speed Racer have driven like a madman to this song. I don't know what it is about it, but I'm guessing if my car flips over and the rescue team comes over the song will still be in the awesome guitar solo part.
I also noticed someone saying that their favorite versions are from 12/6 and 12/7 of 2002. I haven't heard those yet, but if H

Hey All,
Well, I feel bad for Jay Bennett. I've read about his recent health issues. But this lawsuit doesn't make much sense. I know from being an extra in 2 motion pictures (in order to be paid you need sign an agreement form to provide your services to be shown even as a background extra) and doing some college films that getting/obtaining permission is something I'm pretty sure Sam Jones and Trixiefilms got from Jay Bennett. I mean he was being filmed for a documentary. Otherwise, if this was an issue back than we probably wouldn't have seen IATTBYH. Furthermore, this seems like an obvious attack on Jeff and not on Wilco's manager who is not mentioned and who I'm pretty sure is well aware of all of Wilco's business handling. I have no idea though if Bennett wasn't paid his royalties. Nor is this my business to know that. I'm just putting in my .02 cents because the headline makes it out like he's after Tweedy and not Wilco's management and/or Sam Jones and Trixiefilms. You can almost say he's making Jeff seem bigger than Tony M. and Sam Jones.

Onan,
Your post made me laugh. It also gave me an idea. A Scavenger Hunt for the new Wilco record.
It sounds silly, but if it were to be done in the big cities or even in smaller college towns it'd get word out from us the fans that a new Wilco album is about to come out.
I'd even say that there'd be some sort of fee to play to be donated to a charity of choice. It'd be fun and a nice way to experience your city/town with fellow Wilco fans. Though I don't think viral marketing and Wilco go together, I think it'd be a nice idea...maybe obnoxious but it's better than having it leak onto your computer. Maybe it ties in nicely with what we think is the message of the album or have heard the band talk about America.
Kristofor
PS I haven't really thought it through though when that person finds the album. Do they get to share it? I don't know.

Yes, there were a few songs that leaked last time before the official stream from Wilcoworld. I think they first appeared on a blog. The stream followed in short order.
Thanks Preferred B.

PS Not that it matters now, but does anyone recall the blog site? If someone remembers, maybe we should check that every so often.

I realize that. I was just trying to use that movie as an example to put across my opinion on the song which keeps changing with each listen.
