Much, much better, thank you.....for a while I seriously thought I was going to die, as our house has no air conditioning - only an evaporative cooler which is nearly worthless in high humidity (which we had along with the intense heat). For days and days, we couldn't get the interior of the house cooler than 85 degrees.....maybe 80 at night!!!! It was horrible, I just dragged around uselessly. We took to going to stores just to be in some air conditioning!
But it's nice now.....the heat has broken, and in fact today it looks like winter outside....full gray cloud cover! Weird. Very nice though! So of course today we are heading out to the beach, haha. (In Tom's new car, did I mention that Edie? The one you checked out the VIN # on? It's a beaut
....better even than the one he lost in the accident! So

The thing that makes me most sad about this whole affair is that there were the first signs of a re-emergence of an independent Lebanese government with a developing popular support calling for increased efforts to shake off the Syrian domination of the last few decades. It would not surprise me if Hezbollah had stepped up it's attacks deliberately in the hope of stirring things up in order to re-establish it's power base and try and get the rest of the Arab world back on side and renew Syrian influence. Israel didn't disappoint them with it's response. Sounds familiar with the campaign of the "Real IRA" in Northern Ireland once the peace process there had started to have an effect. I wish that the Lebanese had been given more outside help earlier. Now all sides are polarised again, and ordinary arabs throughout the Middle East will have that old nagging sympathy for groups like Hezbollah who they see as the only ones standing up to Israel. Not saying that's a good thing of course, but there are always the festering arguments about Israel (and hence by implication the US) ignoring UN resolutions whenever it suits.
Also, The Syrians I met when travelling there were some of the friendliest people I have ever met - invited into houses on the spur of the moment for meals etc. I was also surprised at the number of Jews and Christians I came across in Damascus. Let's not confuse extremists and the twisted leadership of any country with the majority of the population. It is always this ordinary innocent majority who suffer the most. But, as I indicated, Israel doesn't help itself in trying to reach out to this majority, if that is even possible any more?
Well put, Andrew. The line I've bolded made me think of our current situation in the US, and how much I hope that other countries recognize that our leadership (to use the term broadly) is not us as a nation.

They opened for Wilco in Poughkeepsie and kicked a fair amount of ass. As I recall, they sort of sounded like what a band spawned by Blur and Uncle Tupelo would sound like.
That brings back excellent memories, Dan! So you caught that amazing show? Wish I had gotten the chance to meet you!

I wasn't meaning to offend anyone with my comments and yes, that was a very clinical way of looking at things in the context of a debate. But tell that same woman she has a "clump of cells" that's metastized into a malignant brain tumor and she wouldn't be too happy either. The amount of suffering that cancer alone causes - both the victims and the loved ones / caregivers - is enormous and something I feel we should be devoting all of our resources towards eliminating.
Wouldn't it be great to find a cure for this in our lifetimes? And since we're on the topic of kids, wouldn't it be great to raise our kids in a world without cancer or leukemia? I'd happily donate embryos towards that cause and I'm sure my future wife would agree.
Again, I'm sorry if I've offended anyone, but this is something I feel strongly about.
I didn't take it personally, Kevin....just understood what ElF was saying there.
I, too, feel strongly that we can't find these cures quickly enough, and that research toward that end needs to be supported.

Dude, El F, I've let your dialogue play out because I think this is a useful discussion, and both of you have put a very human face on why this is such a hot-button issue throughout the country. I appreciate the efforts you have made at restraint & fair play, more than you know. It's hard when an issue is so personal, as this one is on so many levels. El Kevin, I too have suffered a miscarriage, so I understand your point poignantly when you say that telling a woman that all she's lost is a "clump of cells" will not go over well with her.
You've both deepened this discussion and that's a good thing. I ask now that, having exhaustively discussed your positions and opinions with each other, you let the dialogue between the two of you drop, or take it to pm's. It's been pretty heated at times, and it's never particularly useful to have accusations and epithets starting to be tossed about.
Again, thanks for your efforts to be civil (and that goes for everyone who has shown restraint in this thread) and to have an intelligent discussion. I just think the two of you should take a breath and a step back from each other. Thanks in advance.
Reading this thread has served to crystalize and solidify my own thoughts on this issue, as I'm sure it has for others reading it. I already knew basically what I thought, but this discussion has helped me to really examine why I think as I do. It's good that we as a community can talk to each other on this level, and, for the most part, manage to remain civil and even fairly open-minded.

let me know how that turns out, i'd love to hear it as i won't be able to make that show.
it's a special day for one of the band members so i'm expecting a short but tight set.
that will also be one of their last shows for a bit while they work on their next album.
hopefully some of The M's opening sets for Wilco turn up out there, these guys are one of the better young bands i'm into now along with Dr Dog who will be opening some shows this fall for the the Raconteurs.
I'm also a huge M's fan & would be interested in anybody's live recordings of them.
Got lots of other bands' stuff to trade. -

We need us another midwest roadtrip! I love that photo of Alissa, Sarah, and their doting "Uncle Jeff".....happy memories! In fact I have a copy here beside my computer.
Remember Alissa, fresh from howling about how hot those beef sticks we'd bought turned out to be.....we'd had to buy her a drink to recover from them!!!......then Jeff strolls up, and the first thing Alissa did was offer him a beef stick????!!!
Good thing he was smart enough to decline! I'd have felt bad if that night's show had had to be cancelled because Jeff's throat was on fire.
