  1. I'm not saying Schilling shouldn't say anything about steroids at all. I just think this particular comment was a stupid one. And yeah, I definately have a knee-jerk reaction to Schilling, but I think this would bug me anyway. It's just a silly thing for him to say.
  2. Is anyone arguing that he's innocent?
  3. So long as there are any investigations going on, he's not going to say anything that hasn't been vetted by his lawyers.
  4. Perhaps, but it also might be argued that Schilling is sort of a self righteous asshole in his own right anyway. Of course Bonds did steroids, but even if he didn't, that doesn't mean he'd be suing everyone who claimed he did. Sometimes lawsuits just aren't worth it, even if you're in the right. Hypothetically, if Bonds were innocent and decided to sue everyone who said he did steroids, how many people would he currently be suing? Thousands? Limited only to media, still in the hundreds, and limited still to national media, perhaps still dozens. There's enough evidence that Bonds did
  5. That book is great. Have you read the Bonds/Ruth breakdown yet?
  6. I was once stuck in an elevator between the 13th and 14th floors of the county courthouse in Detroit. There were about a dozen other people in the elevator. One of them pressed thed "Call for help" button, and the woman on the other end asked "Where are you?". Someone said "Between the 13th and 14th floor." She said "No, what city and state?" Turns out that she was in Kansas City. Seems like a poor way to run an elevator rescue operation. Anyway, the elevator started working like 30 seconds later.
  7. I can't speak for Pearl Jam vs. Nirvana live, but I've seen PJ live a couple of times, and they are fantastic. And if they'd retired when Nirvana released Nevermind, then they would have called it quits after releasing only one album, which happens to in the bottom tier of their releases. That's just silly.
  8. Theory is nice to know to help you when you're stuck, but a lot of people lose sight of the fact that it's theory and not law. The most important thing is if it sounds good. And of course it's the end result that counts. Of course a songwriter can get some personal satisfaction from the work that they put in, but to the listener, all that matters is if it turned out well. And I would guess that the vast majority of great rock songs were written by people who didn't know much, if anything, about theory.
  9. I don't care about the Red Sox, but that's a pretty inspiring story. Truly awesome for that he was able to come back.
  10. But which of those bands is more "now"?
  11. "No no, I'm supposed to be up here. I'm running for President. Really, I am. I'm a U.S. Senator. Dodd. D-O-D-D. I'm serious."
  12. You think the President cares about any of that?
  13. It gives the President the authority to decide, with no oversight, who qualifies under this order. The President having the authority to seize property from anyone that he, unilaterally, declares to be an enemy of the war effort is beyond frightening.
  14. I know that Icky Thump was their first album recorded in a "modern" studio. Not sure if that means they've abandoned analog, or if they're just using newer equipment.
  15. I love Get Behind Me Satan, but I think it's probably their least accessible album. Would be the last one I'd recommend to anyone who isn't familiar with the band.
  16. Artists generally make most of their money from touring anyway. Once a band is well established and is guaranteed to move a lot of units, then the record label will give them some big money, but most bands make very little from record sales (at least on major labels -- this is the case on some indies too, although that sort of thing can differ quite a bit between indie labels, as they're all run pretty differently). That being said, I can certainly understand why an artist who has toiled over their work doesn't appreciate people downloading their music for free, especially in cases where th
  17. I missed out on buying Aragon tickets because I was out of town when they went on sale. Very bummed out. I've seen them, I think, 8 times now, going back to the White Blood Cells record release show, which was pretty much the beginning of the end as far as their seeing-them-in-clubs days go. They are definately a band that I have taken great pleasure in watching how they progress over time, how their songs and their live shows change (and the ways in which they stay the same).
  18. The HR record is definately the most prestigious in the sport, and possibly in all of American sports (not saying it's the most impressive necessarily, just the one that has the most mystique around it and the one that people revere the most). And that's exactly why I think people have lost a lot of perspective on Bonds.
  19. I understand that the chase for the record is the reason that Bonds is under so much more scrutiny. I just think that a lot of the criticism of him does not acknowledge that, and places too much of the blame on him. A lot of people refuse to acknowledge the context of the era in which he played in when they condemn him.
  20. Looks like the craiglist guy hosed us. Oh well. Anyway, here is a pretty interesting article that SI.com did following Kenny Rogers poopy hand incident that gives a pretty good overview of how common it is for pitchers to cheat. I know that some would draw a big distinction between different kinds of cheating, but cheating is cheating, right? I'm all for hating Bonds for being an asshole (because he's a huge one), and if you don't to acknowledge the record, well whatever, that's your right, but I agree with twobobs that too much of the steroids mess has fallen on Bonds's shoulders. He's
  21. Some friends and I were already talking about going up to Milwaukee on Sunday to boo Barry Bonds, and one of them has a seller on craigslist holding tickets for us. Bonds hit 2 homers today, and is now just 2 behind Aaron. Looks like we may witness history.
