  1. I know, I get what they were getting at, I'm just saying, for all we know anyone could have been juicing. A lot of proven juicers weren't that good. It's a misconception that all the juicers were big homerun hitters.
  2. How do we know Counsell wasn't juicing?
  3. Looking forward to Oil Can facing down Rickey Henderson in 2010.
  4. It's pretty straight forward. Bad shit done by anyone is bad. Good shit done by anyone is good. Neutral shit done by anyone is neutral. What's the problem? It's not that things Bush does are good when Obama likes them -- I think they're good if they're things I like. I think they're bad if they're things I don't like. What's so hard to understand? And yes, I'm still mad at Bill Clinton about DOMA, about don't ask don't tell, about the stupid welfare reform and all sorts of other stuff. Good things are good, bad things are bad, doesn't matter who does them. What's the problem? Also
  5. As a private citizen, I'm obviously more qualified to make these decisions than the government is. So no health care for you. By the way, the position of National Coordinator of Health Information Technology was created by the Bush Administration. I'm guessing you probably didn't know that since the right wing talking heads are making it sound like the job is Obama's creation intended to steal away control over your health decisions.
  6. Dunn is really good, but the rest of that team is a total disaster -- especially the pitching staff. I'm a Nats semi-fan but I'll be shocked if they don't finish in last and at least 10 games behind the next team ahead of them.
  7. Quick question: Is there one single person in government trying to re-institute the fairness doctrine? I know a lot of rightwing talking heads are using this as a means to anger people, but seriously, no one is trying to bring this back. It's a total strawman. So calm down.
  8. The players themselves say they used them to keep themselves from getting fatigued. They must be lying.
  9. So greenies are a lesser sin because they don't work as well? Did the players in question (either the meth-heads or the roiders) know that when they committed their infractions? Anyway, I'll also sign on for Wieters in the AL. Don't know enough about who's coming up in the NL to make a pick. And the Mexican assrape story doesn't make much sense as a source for Alomar's HIV -- if he got it way back then, I wouldn't think he would have been able to stay healthy for such a long career, especially in light of the fact that there's no way he was getting treatment for it, since he refused to
  10. No, that's not at all what I mean. Saying that you'll vote for a bill if certain changes are made, and then when those changes are made still not voting for the bill is telling him to go fuck himself. There are certainly legitimate reasons to oppose the bill or parts of the bill, and of course any major legislation should be scrutinized. My point was that the Republicans in Congress were not acting honestly and in good faith, not that there weren't any valid criticisms or reasons to oppose.
  11. Sorry, I just think that the reasoning that spitballs are okay because the penalty is minor is completely irreconcilable with the belief that pre-2003 steroid use was a huge sin against the game, because, again, the penalty at that time was even less (nothing at all) than the penalty for throwing a spitball. If there's another reason why spitballs are okay then fine, but please elaborate on it, because that argument fails on its own logic. And as far as I can tell, there's no real difference at all between using greenies in the 1970s and using steroids in the 1990s. Both violated federal l
  12. First off, amphetamines do alter your body chemistry. That's how they work, and that's the whole point of using them. Greenies give players a huge advantage over the course of a long season -- they allow them to fight off physical fatigue and maintain a higher level of performance all season long than they would otherwise. Making this distinction between steroids and spitballs makes some sort of sense (I guess) but the distinction between steroids and speed is a whole lot smaller than you're admitting.
  13. You did. Either way, the argument keeps going back to the point that spitballs are okay because the punishment is small. Then it's pointed out that until 2003 there was no punishment at all for steroids and therefore, by the same reasoning that spitballs are okay, that steroids must have been okay until 2003. So then it's pointed out once again that this argument doesn't hold true because I don't know why, it just doesn't. Etc etc etc.
  14. Obama can't force anyone else to follow his lead. He made a genuine effort to reach out to the other side and they basically told him to fuck himself. How is that his fault?
  15. How was I in any way suggesting to shoot the messenger? The question came up as to why A-Rod's name is the only one that was released from the list. I proposed an answer to the question. Just because A-Rod is guilty doesn't make the reporter's motives any more pure. The reporter's motivation and A-Rod's guilt are completely unrelated.
  16. Yeah, no kidding, but that's because there are no players in the game who compete with him in terms of any of those things. So what?
  17. And this is the key to why A-Rod's name is the only one that came out, though I don't think her framing is accurate. It's not that he was the only name that they had access to -- if they knew A-Rod then they likely knew a lot more. But this is pretty good hype for the book she has coming out, eh?
  18. Andruw Jones to Oklahoma City (AAA, Texas Rangers).
  19. It wasn't just about money, it was also about competing. All of those guys (and by that, I mean every single player in baseball) is extremely competitive. They wouldn't have gotten that far if they weren't. If they see someone else getting an edge, they're going to be interested in what they're doing, just for the sake of being able to compete with them and level the playing field for themselves again. It's still stupid from a health standpoint, but a lot of people, especially young people, do things that are bad for their health, and when you put them in an incredibly competitive environm
  20. Slate tackles the big questions: Michael Phelps has extraordinary lung capacity. Does that mean he can get extraordinarily stoned?
