I'm so sorry to hear of your loss, Crow. You've written a very moving tribute to both of your parents--you've done them proud. From what you have posted before about your son it sounds like you're following in your dad's footsteps.
I will be lucky if I am half the man my father has proven to be.

Adding insult to injury...not only did I have to bury my beloved mother this weekend, we had stormy weather in DFW and Doctor Who didn't record. Not to equate the two at all, but my daughter and I were looking to watching it today as a bit of mind numbing relief from the unrelenting sadness of thi weekend.
The capper to a really crappy weekend.

Today, my family buried my mother.
She had suffered a massive stroke seven years ago, and she was unable to speak and paralyzed on her right side.
My father...my devoted, steadfast, ever faithful father made it his mission to keep her as comfortable as humanly possible and cared for her in our family home for seven years.
I have learned many things in my life, but my father has shown me how a real man acts. No posturing, No whining. No asking for sympathy. Simply doing the right thing. As difficult as it was, he cared for her.
She died three days after her 81st birthday, in her home.
Luckily, my daughter, wife and I were able to see her the weekend before.
Although she had no ability to speak, she was able to communicate joy and displeaure.
My mother had a great degree of dignity and radiated love and concern. She never lost her beauty, although the seven years had been really hard on her.
I love her dearly and will miss her for the rest of my days.

It must be exhausting to see conspiracy behind every tree.

It sure didn't help Jimmy Carter.
Regarding the question of why anyone would care if Jeff Tweedy supports Obama; Tweedy has tons of fans, who do care. Some don't. But some do and he clearly feels strongly enough about it to go out and talk about his support. Does it matter? To some people, yes it does.

Carter wasn't at war, Carter was involved in a hostage situation and with the massive failure at Desert One on his score card.

Warren Zevon --- Stand in the Fire
The sound of a man on fire.

Earlier last year I quoted the Royal Tenenbaums in reference to Mike Love, "Can’t someone be a shit their whole life and want to repair the damage?" Sadly, it doesn't seem like he really wants to repair the damage. And it's sad, because he's not going to be around for too much longer. He's not going to be remembered in a lot of circles as one half of the songwriting team Wilson/Love or the voice on all of those great records. He's going to be remembered as one of the single biggest assholes in rock history.
I disagree with your assessment...he is THE biggest asshole in rock history.

The Israelis attacking Iran could be an October suprise for an election that is clearly going Obamas way. Does Romney have enough pull with Netanyahu to get him to get Obama to look bad on this?? In the long run the US will support Israel if they bomb Iran no matter who is president. Or will they? No one knows.

Wartime Presidents get reelected. If there is an October attack, more than likely Obama would benefit.

I suppose you could say that's where you drew the line?
I see that you saw what I did there...

Billy Childish vs Jack White
Mark Arm vs Courtney Love
Sonic Youth vs Courtney Love
Mogwai vs Blur
Robert Pollard vs Flaming Lips/Conor Oberst/Sebadoh, etc
That crazy bitch has feuded with so many people that I kept it to the most amusing ones. (She's even feuded with her daughter).

No Jeff Tweedy vs Jay Farrar?
I find that one lacking a little firepower.
Outside of Jay making some odd accusations while promoting a record and Jeff being quoted for a fawning band biography...really no steam or vitriol.
-
Do they deserve it from our perspective, sure, but let's get real; UT was a cult band from the midwest on a tiny ass label. Not a chance.
Now give Wilco a bit of time....maybe.

My thoughts exactly.

The MVP award has become about who has the best stats, not who the MOST VALUABLE PLAYER is. Best stats = Miguel Cabrera. Most VALUABLE player...that is going to be heavily influenced by who we watch on a daily basis.
My MVP is Adrian Beltre.
I don't get a vote.

Nasty or silly, intra or inter band.
There are really two kinds of feuds...legitimate hatred and publicity driven
Real Angst by real people...a lot of it one sided. Most of it involving drugs.
John Fogerty vs. the rest of Creedence (Heavy Weight Division. Maybe the absolutely greatest feud of all time. Family, Dynamics, Band Dynamics, Money...all it needs is a smack addict.)
Courtney Love vs. Dave Grohl (Fighting over a memory. Crazy lady keeping it going 20 years down the line.)
Courtney Love vs. Trent Reznor (Cocaine, collaboration and coitus with a crazy chick do not mix)
Phil vs. Don Everly (Brotherly Armageddon...the gold standard and the quietest)
Ray vs. Dave Davies (Brotherly Armageddon...the Brit invasion version)
Noel vs. Liam Gallagher (Brotherly Armageddon...silly Brits on coke version)
Dave Mustaine vs. Metallica (So you're pissed about getting kicked out of a band because you were a drunken fool?)
John vs. Paul (Heavy Weight Division part II. More ink has been spilled on this one than many wars. Both Parties came to regret the harsh words, so it has a bit of sadness associated with it)
Axl vs. Slash (Why do you think they call it dope?)
DLR vs. Sammy Hagar vs. the Van Halen Brothers (and all the various combinations)
Tommy Lee vs. Kid Rock (Two musical cyphers fighting over a scuzzy whore...included for sheer entertainment value)
Roger Waters vs. David Gilmour (You think YOU'RE the creative force? Fuck you. We'll tour and sell out stadiums while you tour and sell out clubs..plus we'll keep the fucking flying pig)
Art Garfunkle vs. Paul Simon (David vs. Goliath and Goliath makes a greasy spot on the road of David)
Joe Perry vs. Steven Tyler (Cocaine, Collaboration and egos run amok)
Keith vs. Mick (pretty Epic in the Mid-80's...Mick playing the prima Donna and Keef reawakening after a 14 drug induced ennui)
Stewart Copeland vs. Sting (this one actually got fun...then the Police got back together and it lost some steam)
Feuds motivated by desire for media attention
Dandy Warhols vs. Brian Jonestown Massacre (This one is the most fun because Anton Newcombe is a freaking Maniacal Genius)
Beatles vs. Stones (Media creation Mk I. Overstated, but this rivalry got blown up into a feud by the press machine)
Neil Young vs. Lynyrd Skynyrd (probably a publicity stunt...definitely overstated, but pretty famous)
Nirvana vs. Pearl Jam (Media Creation Mk II. Kurt Cobain's media assaults on Pearl Jam were fruitless...Pearl Jam really never took the bait, and the press wept)
Oasis vs. Blur (silly Britpop shit)
Haven't included any of the rap feuds (Jay Z vs. Nas; Tupac vs. Biggie; the NWA meltdown; east coast vs. west coast) because things kind of lose the fun aspect when people start dying.

Reasonable episode...but fell into the trap of trying to cram too much into the show..

Used to love Aerosmith...but that stopped in 93!
What year did Draw the Line come out? That was when I was out.

REM...but it's more that I can't stand any REM since Bill Berry left
Emerson Lake and Palmer
John (Cougar) Mellancamp

If Cabrera wins the triple crown and doesn't win the MVP, then they ought to stop giving the damn thing.
The hitting Triple Crown in one of the rarest accomplishments in Professional sports. People are STILL talking about Ted Williams not winning the MVP in 1941.
-
I was going to make a snarky, even bitter post here, then it hit me.
Why am I now so dismissive and disdainful of a band I used to love?
-
I want to go on record with an official admission.
When the Rangers were unable to resign Cliff Lee after the 2010 season, I thought the signing of Adrian Beltre was a stopgap consolation prize.
I Was Wrong.
Beltre is the best thrid baseman in the game, one of the best of all time, a clutch hitter and a defensive wizard. No Matter how the MVP vote goes (and Trout winning over Cabrera is likely and a travesty to boot), Beltre is the best player in the game right now. Watching him game in and game out, he is simply stellar.
I'm watching every game (and getting more than a little baseball fatigue) and am enjoying seeing Rangers shirts being heavily represented at away games.

another mind creaking as it closes...

I really liked Dig!
There were moments when I was watching Dig! that I simply couldn't believe that some of it wasn't staged.
Anton is a scary genius.

and We Jam Econo @ #1.
With a YT link to the entire doc. Guess what I'm watching this afternoon?
I watched this yesterday...really cool stuff.
