  1. did bruce have plastic surgery? looking forward to this album. any word on producer yet?
  2. trey plays great memorable melodies. derek just wanks....joking. i see where you're coming from. however, all his albums are so damn boring to me...especially that soul revue stuff.
  3. anyone have any opinions on the kind of recent Genesis remix/remasters. i've heard they're way too loud. the floyd remasters seem to be getting good reviews. i wonder how the new rush ones are too. not buying those. would like to see a remixed vapor trails. if that comes out, maybe the trend will stop. fyi, was looking at a bob ludwig talk on youtube where he basically says louder is better!
  4. i'm surprised Dawes and Jayhawks are on these lists. at the same time, these albums got a lot of buzz, but upon release the buzz really died down. i for one don't like the new jayhawks. seems like they tried a bit too hard. Dawes is just too slow of an album with two of the best songs in the last several years: Time Spent In Los Angeles, Fire Away.
  5. being in that band is probably not an easy thing. very intense touring and very intense music. at this point, i'd love to get a tight 10 song album with 4 from cooley and 6 from patterson. as for shonna, she'll probably do session work. i think that is what she was doing before DBT. btw, the 400 Unit comment is hilarious!
  6. i think it will be at least another decade before CDs are gone. the boomers are still buying as are gen X. digital will ultimately be fine if everything was in one place, downloads were lossless, prices decreased by 50% and real album art came as an option. ex, the new wilco comes out and the deluxe version is the lossless download immediately and then the full gatefold sleeve sent to you. that would be awesome! can't believe this is not happening yet. it's the best of both worlds...the convenience of digital and the experience of vinyl.
  7. ABB could def go on without Gregg. warren could sing everything. derek is a great guitarist, however, as with most technical geniuses, he lacks creativity and melody and gets pretty boring.
  8. i always wonder what well trained session musicians say to each other about the utter mediocrity of the stuff they have to play to make a living.
  9. no shooting here. just curious about your thoughts on gillian welch album. i'm a big fan, but haven't picked it up yet.
  10. thanks man! gonna spending some time studying this. too bad you can't get a phd in rock because i read this kind of stuff once and it's in the vault.
  11. need to check that out. although, going to walmart is one of the most depressing things in the world. right, then it's free jazz after that. i do like Dr. Rock on friday nights. he digs up some good, unknown stuff from the 60s,70s. i'm with you though, album 88 seems to play a lot of hip hop, even during the day when it used to be lots of really independent rock, alternative, etc.
  12. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=puwllq0fBLs sorry for all the links. this is 24 secs of evil, or awesomeness.
  13. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/b/b7/Metal_Genealogy.jpg link to metal genealogy. not sure if some of the connections work. a case could be made for a new branch of indie metal: mastodon, the sword, etc.
  14. went to see DT on a whim with a cheap ticket. one of the best concerts i've ever seen. also, there could be a nicer, more gracious band than those guys. unapologetic, virtuosic progressive metal at it's best. as for opeth, yeah, they are somehow a cross over band...even with the death vocals. anyone see that documentary Metal: A Headbanger's Journey? link is below. the scenes with the Norse Black Metal dudes are priceless, especially, gaahl from gorgoroth. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ae_6lYRdu74&feature=related
  15. how about the hours of cardboard ripping on WREK? that's fun stuff!
  16. that's not a bad list. glad to see jason isbell on there. i liked that album. i'm also warming up to the fleet foxes. i'm surprised not to see jayhawks.
  17. thank you so much. it's getting easier each day, but will never be the same.
  18. yeah, they really went down hill fast. a band like that should have at least 10 years in 'em. to me, MMJ would be great if jim james took his songs a little more seriously rather than novelty. At Dawn through Z are just great great albums. as far as the paste list goes, i looked and sampled all the stuff i haven't heard. nothing seemed worthwhile. reminded me of when i'd get the paste sampler in the mail and it was all so bland.
  19. it's so interesting how the 'top' albums are so polarized. Bon Iver top's a few 'worst of' list. the paste is another in a long history of mediocrity and prediction. wilco really should be number 1 this year. it stands on it's own merits. this list is just so goofy to me. top ten with middle brother, that horrible mmj album and the disappointing fleet foxes! really?
  20. one of my dogs passed away last week. lot, lot tougher than i thought it would be.
  21. sad to hear about this. loved his stuff with bill frisell. i hope all my favorite artists can play til the end like he did.
  22. that atlanta show was transcendent. he's probably the only artist these days that i would pay top dollar for. still totally ridiculous. there are only 3 artists that can totally keep my attention when playing solo acoustic...Neil, Tweedy, Jay Farrar. (maybe patterson hood too)
