  1. Thanks for the tip. I'll have a look. I don't really know anything about them. I just stumbled across them on youtube and couldn't stop listening. I found Magnolia Mountain first but then when I found I Taught Myself How To Grow Old...well, man...that outro! Fantastic playing. The Cardinals at their finest.
  2. On a completely different note... I've been watching a few youtube clips of Ryan and the Cardinals from the Avatar sessions. Would anyone be able to point a fan in the direction of any audio downloads from these sessions? They're pretty darn good.
  3. All this talk of the Flaming Lips on another thread...
  4. Amen to this. I don't know of any other guitarist/keyboardists who originally joined their band as the drummer.
  5. 1. Ah yes, I know what you mean...I saw them in Sydney when they were last here and although it was not a Soft Bulletin show, they still kicked off with Race For The Prize and it was exactly as you described. 2. The UFOs At The Zoo DVD is a great way to get into a Flaming LIps show if you can't actually be there. 3. Steven Drozd is an extraordinary musician.
  6. Oh man, Doug Sahm! I am loving this thread. It's actually a little difficult to be subjective about artists once known, now possibly forgotten by the masses when my favourite ones are such a part of my own life's fabric. I recently borrowed a bunch of Doug Sahm vinyl from a friend and it's been on heavy rotation. Honky Blues is such a great, great record, Together After 5, Mendocino...I'm loving it all. Listen to the brass section on this one...brings a great big ol' smile to my face every time. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZiSn3SfJavk&feature=player_detailpage
  7. OK, next... Buffy Saint Maire. Dave Graney and the White Buffaloes introduced me to the song Codeine. Mesmerising.
  8. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qUQyDfg8rfE&feature=player_detailpage Nice video for a wonderful song which features artist Steve Keene at work.
  9. Hey man, that's an impressive list of forgotten names there. I'll bite. A few years ago a friend introduced me to John Hartford's music. Pure, sweet and beautiful. A wonderful soul. Such tasteful, unobtrusive banjo playing. "You worry the morning, the worry the night you worry for something that's not yet in sight your worry is rotten, your head is on fire and you'd better untangle your mind..."
  10. As one of those gushing, this only shows what a wonderful bass player John is.
  11. Just finished reading City of Thieves and really enjoyed it. Great story about a terrible time. It also came across as incredibly well researched. Looking forward to starting The 25th Hour.
  12. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4KH90v-yU3s&feature=player_detailpage Perhaps my favourite song from the Melody Nelson record. If you've ever wondered where Beck (or his Dad) drew inspiration from when arranging the strings for 'Sea Change', you need look no further than this album.
  13. Oh wow, yes. Peter Fenton. A very nice guy. A band I was in at the time played at a Gram Parsons/Flying Burrito Brothers tribute night and he was there. He sang a few songs then came up on stage with us at the end to sing 'A Song For You'.
  14. Dirty Three opening for Crow at the Annandale Hotel, Sydney circa 1999. Will Oldham (with JIm White on drums and Mick Turner on guitar playing the Get On Jolly album) opening for the Dirty Three at The Metro some years later.
