  1. http://www.eyedrum.org/ I was incorrect in stating that Eyedrum owns their property, so the comparison is not really fair. They do not own, they have a long term lease. Regardless, if the DMG guys think it can be done, I refuse to shit on their idea. The questions you raise about who's going to do this and who's going to do that...well, those are problems that will have to be dealt with by responisble adults, and not flakey kids in bands. Look how many records Zorn has released on his label and look at how much globe-trotting is required of people like Marc Ribot, Bill Frisell, Dave Dou
  2. Clearly there's a big difference between a club (in the case of Tonic, two people, plus a doorman and a bartender) and an arts collective, which could incorporate music, dance, theater, film and all manner of visual arts. I'm not saying it'd be simple, but it's definitely do-able with some coordinated efforts and a board of directors put in place to take care of the mundane hassles all property owners must deal with (which Eyedrum in Atanta has managed to do). I'm pretty sure the DMG guys know a hell of a lot more about real estate in NYC than anyone on this board, and they seem to think it
  3. Again, they're not proposing buying the building they're currently in. Eyedrum in Atlanta has successfully done what they're proposeing. Granted, real estate in Atlanta is peanuts compared to NYC. Eyedrum has survived through grants and non-profit status. That's alwasy an option for the folks in NYC.
  4. They're not proposing the club buy a building. They're proposing a commuity arts collective raise money to put a down payment on a building, and then continually raise funds to pay the mortgage.
  5. I think the overarching problem is that the end result of capitalism is greed. DMG has offered the only long term solution that could actually work, and even if their vision became a reality and they bought a building it would still be vulnerable to eminent domain seizure.
  6. Here's an interesting letter/proposal in response to Tonic's closing from the folks at NYC's "Downtown Music Gallery": AN OPEN LETTER TO ANY VIABLE MUSIC-ACTIVIST GROUPS HERE IN NYC: "It's time for [at least one] building to be bought and owned by a downtown-Manhattan new-music collective. All future fundraising and energies - undissipating anger, political drive - should be towards this goal. The corrupting effect, which began appx 20 years ago on the real estate market, of national chains who would pay any amount to have representative retail outlets in NYC, without heed to th

I can't guarantee I'm right. I'm hoping Atlanta tix don't go on sale for another two weeks, but since I'll be out of town Tues. -Sat. next week I'm sure they'll go on sale then.

The way they have pre-sale info listed, it would appear that Atlanta tickets do NOT go on sale tomorrow. If Atlanta does go on sale tomorrow, they have done a REALLY bad job making the listings clear on the website. At this time, Ticketmaster has no info regarding the Atlanta date. Me too...Like perhaps a change of venues. Even Masquerade Music Park would be better than Chastain.

Don't worry. They'll update their website when they return from their polo tournament.
  10. Fricke doesn't like people calling him on the phone for no reason. I don't either, so thumbs up to Fricke.
  11. All that matters in regard to whether or not they debut at #1 is how many people pre-order or buy the album the day (or week) of the release date. Linkin Park will probably always outsell Wilco, but do their fans buy their albums 1. right when it comes out, or 2. once they've heard it on the radio a few dozen times? I think the answer is 2. It's entirely possible SBS will debut at #1. I would imagine the percentage of Wilco fans who buy their stuff as soon as it is available is FAR higher than the percentage of Linkin Park fans who do the same. Having said that, a #1 debut would just rai
  12. 90% of the articles written about Wilco STILL start out with the YHF backstory, so I think the answer is no.
  13. Ishibashi is the source for Japanese Fenders (or Japanese ANYthing), but I heard that they no longer ship to the US. I'm not sure if that's true. The Japanese Fenders have a solid reputation, and are pretty widely considered superior to US made Fenders from recent years. Those Jet Kings pop up from time to time, but I guess they're getting pretty rare. The Jet King 2 is more widely available, but is atrocious, imo.
  14. You could get one of the older Ibanez Jet Kings and do some work on it, possibly turning a profit (or if not a profit, at least it's a cheap guitar on which to hone your refinishing and electronics skills). Those are pretty cool guitars, and versatile since they have the coil tap. http://www.mojopie.com/jtk1.html
  15. Mine broke, too. It only broke at the clear part near the hole, and still plays, but it's annoying.

There's a strong possibility that you will not be allowed to bring in a cooler at this show. As nice as it is to be able to bring in a cooler and not buy $5 beers, I'd gladly leave the cooler at home if it means the people in the best seats are NOT making business deals with their associates during the concert. The tickets usually say "No Coolers" when it is a non-table set-up concert: CHASTAIN PARK SEATING INFO According to Chastain Park's offical website: Chastain Park Seats are broken down into tables (each table seating accomodates 6), reserved orchestra seats, and a general admission ar

Yeah, the Fox is BY FAR the best thing in Atlanta. Apparently, Chastain is the only venue in Atlanta that is bigger than the Fox/Tabernacle/Civic Center but not as big as Philips Arena/Lakewood Amph./Gwinnett Center. Wilco's only other option, aside from playing a 1/4 full 20,000 seater, would have been to do a "half-house" concert at Philips, but that's still 10,000 seats. The best scenario is for all you fans within a few hours of Atlanta to buy tickets. Every seat occupied by a true fan is one less seat available to a yapper, so please make the roadtrip.

Well stated. Chastain Park Amphitheater is literally right in the middle of an exclusive country-club/old-money style community.

I believe the infamous Neil Young/Lucinda Williams show was NOT part of a series, and is well known as an example of poor audience behavior. Obviously I hope the crowd for Wilco will be respectful and have a good time, but there just seems to be something about the venue that brings out the worst in audiences.

People who go to concerts at Chastain. They bring fig leaves and quiche, too. Like I said before, the Wilco concert will probably be "No Coolers Allowed", so the chances of the Wilco guys getting pelted with cheese are slim, but the annoying audience chatter is always guaranteed at Chastain.

Chastain has two basic concert set-ups. One is a table set-up in which the "floor" or "pit" section is all tables. The people who sit at the tables bring candelabras and have their table catered, or bring upscale food and beverages, and thoroughly ignore whatever act is on stage. They treat the event as a dinner out with friends or business associates, rather than a concert. People in the stands often bring in their own folding table and tablecloths, etc and set them up in front of their seats. For these concerts, all audience memebrs are allowed to bring in coolers with food, alcohol o

Chastain Park has a capacity of 6700. Fox Theater (where they played last time) has a capacity of 4400. That's not too big of a jump. However, Chastain is a horrible place to see a show. I predict this will be the one and only time they will play there. The audiences there are notoriously rude to the bands, regardless of who that band is. Ask Neil Young, who had to stop one of his acoustic songs on the Greenville tour and tell the audience to quiet down so he could hear himself. Ask Garrison Keillor, Lyle Lovett, Randy Newman, Ricky Lee Jones or Dan Fogelberg, all of whom have left
  23. Spraying your strings with Fast Fret, or a similar string cleaning product, might help. This stuff also makes the neck feel nice and smooth. Or you could try coated strings. Elixir is one brand that comes to mind.
  24. Yeah, it was probably just a bad one. The store had more of them, but I was only able to try out the crappy one. I wound up getting a Taylor 414, which has made me want to do nothing but play guitar since I first tried it out.
