  1. Billboard has a good article on the new record: http://billboard.biz/bbbiz/content_display...d69d2dae2?imw=Y "I knew I wanted that attitude before I found the band," Booker, 64, says over a glass of red wine at a bar in Manhattan's East Village. "This album has a lot to do with attitude. The MG's were never an in-your-face band
  2. The Booker T & the DBTs show from 4/1/09 is streaming here: http://southernshelter.com/2009/04/drive-b...-t-variety.html Personally, I'll take the MGs over the DBTs any day of the week.
  3. >For me any half ass song that features a pedal steel becomes worth listening to. I agree.
  4. I'll throw in a vote for David Lindley's playing on Running on Empty. (or is that a lap steel?) "In '69 I was 21 and I called the road my own" And I'll second Pride of Cucamonga and Wiser Time.
  5. >And I used to really love Gomez too. Me, too. Loved the first two albums and tours.
  6. Gregg Allman interview from Gibson guitars website: http://www.gibson.com/en-us/Lifestyle/Feat...lman-talks-311/ I don't think it's been posted yet. >In the early days you spent most of your waking hours on a tour bus. What kind of music did you listen to? A lot of jazz and a lot of blues
  7. I have heard that you don't need to tip on the price of a bottle of wine, unless a sommelier helps you choose it. I always do anyway, considering it the same as if you got a few drinks.

  10. I have to think there are a number of young bands playing great Willie-Merle-Johnny-type country out there that are being ignored by the current Nashville suits. How about Carrie Underwood's version of Motley Crue's "Home Sweet Home"? It might replace Marilyn Manson's version of the Eurythmics' "Sweet Dreams" as Worst and Most Unnecessary Cover of All Time.
  11. It's all pretty sad. I liked everything through Adore. The Mellon Collie show I saw at MSG and Adore show at Radio City were both terrific. At the end of the RCMH show, each band member pulled up a fan one at a time and handed him or her the instrument. Billy was replaced first, by some 16-year-old if I remember correctly. That kid was pumped. One by one they left until a bunch of nobodies were playing some intense feedback. It was pretty compelling. I liked one or two songs on the Zwan album, but the show I caught at Hammerstein was the end of the line for me. It was entirely uninte
  12. >Beck - one of the best concerts I'd ever seen, then a few years later, shitty. He just seemed really bored, didn't engage, called it in. Sucks because I liked him a lot. I've heard that a few times from fans who saw the last tour. It's a shame because the show I saw in support of Mutations was one of the dozen or so in my ever-expanding all-time top 5.

  14. I must admit that Sun Volt was pretty underwhelming. They played the final show at Tramps in NYC, which you'd think would call for a big celebration of the place. It was billed as the final concert. It must have been around the second album, both which I really liked at the time. The music was great, but it was as if there were X's taped to the stage because they didn't move one inch from where they were each standing the entire night. And I couldn't believe that the band didn't say a single thing to the crowd, not even a hello or to acknowledge the closing of the venue. The whole thing ga
  15. >He just put out a new album not to long ago. I figure there will come a day when he leaves the band to do his own thing full time. He's pulling a Warren-type three-fer by playing solo, with the Allmans, and also with Clapton. I don't know if playing with Clapton was semi-permanent or just for a tour or two. Nice balance, nevertheless.
  16. From wbgo.org, a great jazz radio station in Newark, NJ: Derek Trucks is one of the best blues/rock guitar players of the last 20 years, all the more remarkable since he
  17. Sheryl Crow played last night. What's her connection, other than through Clapton?
  18. Drive By Truckers (opening for Hold Steady) last year atr Terminal 5 in NYC was a huge snoozefest. Pedestrian songs played in a boring way. The drummer played the same beat for an hour. I hadn't been that underwhelmed in years.
  19. I always wondered what conversations Ron Tutt had with Jerry Garcia and Elvis during the 70's, while Tutt was playing in both their bands. It must of been weird for Tutt to go from a Elvis Vegas gig to a Garcia San Fran gig. Not to mention the interesting drugs that each camp must of had. He didn't know he played with them both during the same period. Tutt would be a great interview.
  20. >You read a few reviews telling you how great and amazing something is and you listen to it and you think "what am I missing?" That's happened to me so many times about music recommended on this site that I wonder how those fans and I have found a common ground in Wilco. I arrived at Wilco from a classic rock/Grateful Dead/Americana/classic jazz background, whereas many on VC arrived at Wilco from a far-more-modern, indie background. I find that dichotomy fascinating.
  21. I had an eight track with a song called something like "Long Legged Lady With a Short Dress On." I haven't found it or heard it since I was a kid.
  22. I don't care for Phish at all, but thought this was a cool quote from NYTimes article: >
  23. If you liked the first episode, wait until you see the next one, with Will Ferrell as guest. The show is over-the-top.
  24. http://www.jambands.com/Features/content_2009_02_22.06.phtml >Your roots are clearly in improvisational music, but many of our readers first heard of you through your work in the rock band Wilco. How has your time with Wilco changed your style of playing? I am not sure if does change
