QUOTE (dmait @ Dec 3 2008, 10:44 AM) >I'll be seeing these guys open for Sonic Youth next Friday. They're one of those bands I've been hearing a lot about and have been meaning to check out, so I guess this will be a good introduction. That's what I mistakenly thought before I caught their show with the Drive By Truckers. >What does that mean? Before I saw the show, I'd heard a lot about both HS and DBTs, I'd been meaning to check them out, and I thought it would be a good intoduction to their music. As it turned out, I didn't enjoy either band.

Looks like Jay is going for a Philip-Seymour-Hoffman-in-Boogie-Nights look: http://www.pastemagazine.com/articles/2008...m-for-free.html

>I thought there was a GA area closest to the stage, but assigned seating behind it, still on the floor. Is that not the case? That is correct.

This Japanese website has record sleeves and liner notes for many Blue Note LPs: http://www.gokudo.co.jp/Record/BlueNote1/index.htm Though slightly off-topic, it's pretty interesting even to the casual jazz fan.

>Amauteur snapshots - 11/17/1978 Rambler Rom at Loyola University Great pics. Are they yours? Here's the archive link for the show: http://www.archive.org/details/gd78-11-17....7687.sbeok.shnf

>That being said, Turtle hooking up with Jamie-Lynn Sigler might well turn out to be their jump-the-you-know-what moment. It was a good episode (much better than the previous), but the Turtle-Meadow scenes, though enjoyable, were some of the worst acting since (fill in the blank).

>i think Californication definitely took a turn for the worse in the season one finale when hank's ex (can't remember her name) left bill for hank. part of what was making that show so great was their interactions as exes. That's absolutely spot on. Must be one of the earliest shark-jumping examples. Season one started off so strong and ended so horribly. I never thought the show could recover, but though season 2 continued to be weak, it has gotten better over the last few episodes.

So I saw Paul Simon open for AC/DC yesterday...
dmait replied to remphish1's topic in After The Show
Walking to the train after the Phil Lesh show last night I walked through the crowd emptying out of the AC/DC show. That crowd looked like they're still living in the early 1980s, with the big hair and skin-tight jeans tucked into big clunky boots - and that's just the guys. Pretty funny. There were a few guys dressed like Angus in the schoolboy outfit. -
Phil's show last night at the Nokia was excellent. Stellar first set. I'd suggest trying to catch one of the remaining shows of the run. Phil Lesh on his appreciation for RA (http://www.jambands.com/Features/content_2008_10_25.10.phtml): MG- You have also been covering Ryan Adams a good deal recently. PL- Ryan

>The lyrics to "Liar's Club" totally and completely evoke (for me) the time, immediately following college graduation, when my friends and I would hit the bars, looking for fun, women, and just good times. We thought it was everything that life was supposed to be and was going to be. And then, reality hit as hard as this song. I don't know anything about the record, but you are right. The period post-college until about age thirty is great age.

http://33third.blogspot.com/2008/11/would-...write-book.html Can anyone on this site write one on YHF? Wasn't there a kid on here writing a book report on it? Maybe he could flesh it out to a full book.

Sounds like there's a Dead biopic in the works with Weir as musical director. http://www.rollingstone.com/rockdaily/inde...-a-sacred-task/

>During one musical lull, Black formed a house-painting company in Austin, Texas, with Arthur Brown. They also made an album, "Brown, Black and Blue." Imagine having "the god of hell fire" painting your house.

Before last night I associated Grant Park only with Wilco's last show with Jay Bennett. No more.

Whenever I see anything about Genesis or Phil Collins I think about Roger Waters' comments about "poor Phil Collins" from this interview for Musician Magazine for Amused To Death. (I can't believe that album is 16 years old.) http://www.pinkfloyd-co.com/band/interview...musician92.html >"You can draw a line between what I'm interested in and what I'm not interested in," he said. "On one side you can name Dylan and Lennon, who observe the world and have "feelings", and write songs directly from those feelings. On the vapid side you have pop groups who need material and write songs to f

>I can't wait to hear this. I like her cover of Bessie Smith (The Band) Yes, she does a terrific job with that one. I hope her version of Jesus, Etc. has a similar sound with the electric piano.

>11/9/91 I was at that show. Drove 5 hours on, I believe, the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel through a storm with waves just about lapping over the car. Bought a ticket so fake the print wiped off by the time we reached our seats. Great, great show. Bruce's electric piano, as its called, adds a nice touch. Jerry was in fine form in those days, with Bruce complementing him beautifully and, thankfully, without Vince's casio. >Yep. I've said it before here, but Fall '73 is my very favorite GD tour. Nice. Now that's precise. In general '73-74 is my favorite period.

"You Angel You" on PW is great song that gets little mention. I've always been surprised that quite a few big Dylan fans don't care for the album.

From Sunday's NY Times: http://www.nytimes.com/2008/10/26/arts/mus...amp;oref=slogin October 26, 2008 Playlist | Ryan Adams A Dash of Mainstream and a Whole Lot of Metal By WINTER MILLER ON a recent tour, the singer-songwriter Ryan Adams insisted on not knowing which city he was scheduled to play next and how long each stop would be. But he has been far from directionless. Mr. Adams has been writing a book of prose and poetry, to be published in March by Akashic Books. He has been working on his third album with his band, the Cardinals,

Great thread. Toys is a classic from start to finish. The LP is still in my collection. I've always thought the "comeback" album, Done With Mirrors, is sorely overlooked. It's pretty heavy compared to the later Lite FM-Dude Looks Like a Lady stuff.
