A happy night, to be sure, but tinged with sadness: Tom Glavine has a potentially life-threatening condition and Cliff Floyd's sister died. -
Hezbollah seems more efficient than FEMA in post-disaster relief. Maybe we should contract with them to fix up New Orleans.

He's a kidder, that Tweedy. It seems that the early versions of songs sometimes are all changed up when they make it on a studio release, so who knows?

Those schoolgirl days Of telling tales and biting nails are gone But in my mind I know they will still live on and on But how do you thank someone who has taken you from crayons to perfume It isn't easy but I'll try If you wanted the sky I would write across the sky in letters that would soar a thousand feet high To Sir with love. The time has come for closing books and long last looks must end And as I leave I know that I am leaving my best friend A friend who taught me right from wrong and weak from strong That's a lot to learn. What, what can I give you in return If you wanted the moo -

What portion of your musical collection features rap?

Probably about 40 percent. If me, El F. and Sir Stewart got together, I think we would see just about eye-to-eye on what's good and what's not. For the record, I would like to say there is not a painful enough death in the universe for Eminem. The Saarlak is probably as close to a just punishment for that punkass as can be found outside of Satan's maw. -
I am back from the gym. I do feel better I went. The sauna there kind of sucks, though.
-
No, that was more like a "god damn it, you're going to take your lazy ass to the gym today" type of statement. Going now!

God damn it, I am going to gym today.

The first scientific paper my sister had her name on was about a guy who drank a bounch of antifreeze and was brought into the hospital. When asked why he had done such a foolish thing, he replied, "Because I ran out of beer."

Our revolution is one of the few in history that didn't immediately laspe into a horrifying dictatorship. I'm not sure we'll be so lucky a second time around.

Congrats. Truly you will be doing the Lord's work. I looked for that beer when I was at the mega-beer distributor in Poughkeepsie, but no dice.

Be careful, man. That sentiment was a fertile ground for the growth of a certain movement in a certain Central European country once. Democracy ain't perfect, but it beats all other alternatives. The term "benign dictatorship" in an oxymoron.

This job has been quite the learning experience, hasn't it?

Sure. When Analogman and I were teenagers, the homogenization of youth culture wrought by MTV, et. al, hadn't really gotten started. In my school at around 1983, it would have been a pretty radical act for a white kid to publicly embrace hip hop culture. I was digging Run-DMC back then, but kept it to myself. This was a school were a kid got his ass kicked for saying he didn't like Van Halen, mind you.
-
And if you're a white kid growing up in suburbia, almost anything seems more interesting than being a white kid growing up in suburbia.

I did actually cast a vote for Al Sharpton in a primary back in the '80s; I think it was for U.S. Senate. While Tawana Brawley was in fact a liar, and Sharpton, Altom Maddox and the other guy who's name I forget exploited the hell out of the situation, Tawana's story of being attacked by three white guys linked to law enforcement was not considered implausible by many at the time. As I tell people, you get more than 10 miles away from either bank of the Hudson, you may as well be in KKK Land. And as Chris Rock put it: "He's no Martin Luther King, but if you get your ass beat by the police, he'

So now I'm goin' back again, I got to get to her somehow. All the people we used to know They're an illusion to me now. Some are mathematicians Some are carpenter's wives. Don't know how it all got started, I don't know what they're doin' with their lives.
