I think the global political/economic structure integration will not stop for anything, short of nuclear war or alien invasion or both. (Hopefully, we would all unite against teh aliens.) The question is whether this is done with benevolence or malevolence, if it can even be done with benevolence. I am not an anarchist - I believe somebody has to be in charge for liberty to exist in any meaningful way, as liberty cannot exist without justice, and justice is not a force of nature. It is something we all work to create and maintain.

Blocked! This is one of the times I wish I could become emotionally involved with college football but until SUNY New Paltz goes Division I, alas.

Jesus, could you imagine the joy of NY Post and Daily News headline writers if the Mets signed Putz.

A better homage to their Montreal days would be powder-blue road unis, with the old Expos "M" logo turned upside down into a "W." Comme

You are right - there is no magic money tree. Things are going to suck quite hard for the next few years pretty much across the board. The hoi polloi will feel better about shouldering their burden if they think those in higher tax brackets are doing their fair share. Restoring the highest tax bracket to what it was in the Clinton era (35 percent to 39.5 percent) will be a good start, it seems to me, and falls short of confiscatory. -

Maybe you should get on the horn to the King of Sweden to get his Nobel Prize revoked. -
No. Really, I do know racism is bad.

Aww. I kind of lean toward the "people are born rotten and just get worse, typically" theory of human nature, but to hear something like that makes me wonder if there is not some innate good in us.

So, where will you be watching the results come in?

Damn. I should have thought to somebody after the Giants won the Super Bowl. -
My grandma had a Gran(dma) Torino. After she passed, we got the car. Brown, with the 351 V-8, which I wanted to take out of that car and drop into my '66 Mustang as part of a project to make it a Deathmobile. I was going to paint it deep, deep metallic purple, get a chrome skull shift knob and never take it out during the day. Anyway, the G. Torino on the hood had the letters "F-O-R-D," each its own separate entity with its own hole. For some reason, a mechanic one time (or it might have been me on drugs) rearranged the letters so it was "F-R-O-D," so the car was thenceforth called "the Frod."

Eh, nobody reads Newsweek anymore. It is about as relevant as The Saturday Evening Post. -

You know what? I'm ready to be led for a fucking change. I do not think I am alone in this - there was a lot of talk on the TV today about how this might bring an end to or at least a curtailment of the cut-throat partisanship we have had for the last fucking 20 years. I have high standards about who leads me, and Obama so far has met them, most notably actually being smart enough to be qualified for the most powerful job in the world. If everybody keeps saying everything and everybody is bullshit, everything and everybody will become bullshit. Bush had his moment to lead after 9/11. He most s -

A breakthrough in journalism. I weep for the fact that Edward R. Murrow was not able to interview H.L. Mencken via hologram. -
It's been called off on account of Obama. (Couldn't find that book, btw, but this is it: http://www.amazon.com/Illuminatus-Trilogy-...7399&sr=8-1)

The world's reaction to Obama's win

Yes. Obama has an opportunity to not only lead America, but much of the world. His election really does put our best foot forward and highlights the good things about us. -

Speaking as the New York elitist that I am, part of my desire for a Chicago Olympiad is the fear of what one in New York would do to the entire metropolitan area. Shit barely functions as it is! -
