  1. I've been addicted to their new one all week.
  2. The lack of audience may be a trend... Autumn Defense is set to play Milwaukee soon, and this week the Pabst Theatre started giving away free tickets to their email subscribers. There's no catch; just go online and print one off.
  3. I loved it. It was the soundtrack of my summer.
  4. Happy birthday, Allison! Hope to see you again soon!
  5. It's impossible to stop kids from using Cliffs Notes or SparkNotes, or whatever. I just tell them that if they want to use that stuff, they should use it as a supplement to the actual reading. Reading those without actually reading the book is akin to reading a movie review and saying you saw the movie--there's a huge difference in experience, and what's lost in the summarizing process can't be substituted for by any kind of outside analysis, no matter how complete or perceptive.
  6. You, sir, should go into marketing.
  7. In general, I don't care about licensing songs for advertising. It's a non-issue for me. In most cases, I think the whole idea of "selling out" is an artificial distinction based upon an artificial, idealized notion of artistic purity. In related news, this morning I heard the New Pornographers in a commercial for (I think) Phoenix University, and I've been hearing Spoon all over the place.
  8. Interesting how "Satan Said Dance" is already shaping up to be one of the most polarizing songs of the year. I definitely dig it--I find the strange clacks, noises, and electronic clutter deeply musical. Like the album overall, it's really grown on me. But I should probably stop playing the song around the house. Tonight, at the dinner table, my 2-year-old daughter suddenly started singing, in a quiet whisper, "Say-tan, Say-tan..." That'll be tough to explain to her grandmother (a lifelong church secretary).
  9. Neal: [riding in the back of a pickup] What do you think the temperature is? Del: One.
  10. On Friday, our super swore to us that we would have school today. We closed.
  11. My wife was amused by his shadow schlong. Terrific performance, though.
  12. I love it, and I think it's a great choice for a single.
  13. Rumor around Wisconsin is that the Pack might make a move for Randy Moss, a prospect I am deeply ambivalent about. I also have mixed feelings about Favre's return. At the end of the 2005 season, I wanted him to step aside and give space for Rodgers to practice in a risk-free rebuilding year. Now, though, I think I want to see him get that career TD record, and it might be fun seeing him gun for the playoffs one last time. Based on the last few games, and with the right off-season moves, this team could, perhaps, help Favre retire as a winner. As for the Super Bowl, Go Colts.
  14. I thought it was minor Winterbottom, but some of the concert footage was memorable.
  15. Happy anniversary! Been awhile since I last saw you two... hope to see ya soon!
  16. I teach high school. A few days ago I was walking to my classroom and, to my disbelief, heard "Losing Streak" emanating from a science lab. I popped in to give the thumbs-up to the teacher, who shrugged... Then, from the back of the room, I saw one of my students from last year. He shouted, "Hey, Mr. B! Listen! I bought it the same day you told me about it! Great stuff!" They were listening to his iPod through the stereo system. Then I went upstairs, where my computer was shuffling songs. I walked in, and what was playing? "Losing Streak." Okay, not as cool as seeing E walking his
