Mavis Staples and Friends - 11/19/14, Auditorium Theatre, Chicago
bböp replied to Albert Tatlock's topic in After The Show
It might look good when it gets edited together, but it was kind of plodding to actually be there because of all the moving parts. I thought Jeff and Spencer got the worst slot of the night. I mean, how do you have them come out and do You Are Not Alone right after the disco-boogie of Slippery People and right before the climactic I'll Take You There? I know they're hometown heroes and all that, but unfortunately they kind of got lost in the shuffle IMHO. That said, it was cool to see Jeff, Patty Griffin and Emmylou Harris gathered around one mike for The Weight. -
Great to see the Lou in attendance!

Oh man, so I guess this was the same Palladium where the live album was recorded? Hope one of those was the Marvin Gaye show you were lucky enough to be at... Excellent recap, sir! Thanks for the details...a fine job, I might say. Glad you got to the show and enjoyed it. It is always a bit tough to report from Banter Corner, because so much of it is generated in the moment and, as you say, Mr. T's comic timing is usually quite stellar. It must have been a little bit of a weird venue to see them in, by the sounds of it, but then again, some of the venues for the Tweedy band here in th

Looking forward to reading your reports on the TWEEDY band! The funny thing is ST was actually in Port Chester last night (I think the Tweedys are flying over today), so I was hoping we might get a little guest spot. But it wasn't to be. What's the Capitol Theatre when you've already played Madison Square Garden as a 12-year-old, right? Haha. Anyway, have fun! I hear that Sukierae is doing quite well on the other side of the pond, hence the quick return there early next year... -

Surprised that no one has mentioned how Jeff basically chided the crowd for not really "giving it up" between the main set and the first encore. And it was true. That's a big pet peeve of mine when people basically don't even applaud and then just expect that the band will come back out. Jeff seemed a bit miffed and/or annoyed at that; for him to even say something about it, you knew it was a pretty lackluster ovation. I think Jeff sort of said something like, "We've already played two hours...we don't have to keep playing." A small part of me wished he was more of a dick and just decided to -
That's because the alternate version from the More Like The Moon/Australian EP (which I'm sure this is) is spelled Camera. http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/More_Like_the_Moon

Just to address the line and venue questions...I'd say the line started forming in earnest around 5. It really didn't get that long until around maybe 6. That's not really very hard core, relatively speaking, though I guess if you were looking for a spot in the smallish seated section, then you probably should've gotten there earlier. I was wondering about how the view was from the seats or the hill for that matter because the stage is so low and there's that elevated "lip" where people stand right up against the stage. Having gone to Jeff's solo show at NCMA in 2006, I was really curious ab -

Or The One Where Jeff Mistakenly Called A Young Boy A Girl... -
I guess this one will forever be known as the One With The Beer Can Throwing...but thankfully it came early on and ended up still being a fun night. Looks like there was one change from the printed list: Unfortunately they cut Kicking Television (which was apparently soundchecked) in the first encore and replaced it with Outtasite. Red-Eyed>I Got You>Outtasite is the classic rockin' encore, but it's been a while since full-band Kicking TV! Here was the complete setlist, as played: Ashes Of American Flags Either Way I Am Trying To Break Your Heart> Art Of Almost At Least That's W

Wilco — 10/22/14, Nashville, TN (Ryman Auditorium; Night Two)
bböp replied to bböp's topic in After The Show
Looks like it's only been done live by the full band five times previous to tonight, twice on the "Evening With" tour in 2010 (in Montclair, NJ and Pittsburgh) and then three times in 2003 when the MLTM EP had just come out. So just twice before with the current lineup... I guess I'm such an old-timer around these parts nowadays that I was actually at the song's live debut (according to Wilcobase/Wilcoworld) on April 28, 2003 at Yale University. I've always had a soft spot for it for a few reasons, though, so it was wonderful to get to hear the full band dust it off again tonight. And Jeff -

The Ryman Auditorium - Nashville, TN - 10/21/14

I knew this question would come up. I remember they had played it at the last show of the Vic Kicking Television run in 2005 when they were having major technical issues and had to sort of do an impromptu acoustic set. (Jeff also crowd surfed, but that's another story.) The listing on Wilcoworld (via Wilcobase) also shows they did it at an in-store performance in Minnesota in 1995. That was also likely a stripped-down show. Maybe even a Jeff and Jay acoustic thing. So to answer the question, it depends on what you define as "full band." Because even last night, even though the full band st -

Ok, just for accuracy's sake, here was the complete setlist as played for Ryman Night 1 (band went on at 7:41 and went off for the final time at 9:55): Forget The Flowers Solitaire Muzzle Of Bees Cars Can't Escape One By One Pick Up The Change (no harmonica arrangement) Hummingbird Art Of Almost I Might I Am Trying To Break Your Heart> One Wing Via Chicago Whole Love Box Full Of Letters I'm Always In Love Promising Ashes Of American Flags How To Fight Loneliness Jesus, etc. Born Alone The Late Greats Heavy Metal Drummer A Magazine Called Sunset Dawned On Me A Shot In The Arm ------------ -
My biggest problem with it was that it was just a lazy piece of criticism. I don't mind criticism of bands I like if the points are well thought out and/or conveyed. This piece, IMHO, was neither. The author wanted to slag the box set or be a wiseass about it, but the best they could do was some kind of inane list? As an admirer of well-written material, it was just kinda weak. Or maybe it just didn't jibe with my sense of humor (but I do think I have one).

I'm sure some people saw this one...did you know Wilco are posers for calling themselves a Chicago band? http://blogs.riverfronttimes.com/rftmusic/2014/10/77_things_id_rather_do_than_listen_to_the_upcoming_77-song_wilco_rarities_box_set.php?page=2

I made it, after hearing about it just in time to get there. They played three songs unplugged (well, four of the five of them): Go Home, Turn It Around and It Don't Matter Anymore (the Buddy Holly cover they did with J.D. McPherson that will be on the Wildewoman deluxe edition). The sundae, I'm pretty sure, was two scoops of Whiskey and Pecan and a scoop of Bourbon Caramel with some whipped cream. Tasty, but then again most stuff at Jeni's is.

You sort of knew Jeff and Spencer would be there if they could to return the favor for Lucius singing at all those recent TWEEDY shows (and on the album, of course). Lots of fun! And the dedication to Susie for Wildewoman Wednesday was very touching and emotional.

The technical issues weren't too severe, but just enough to kind of hamper the flow of the set at times. Still always great to see her, though. And we were hoping Dave (and/or Gill) was going to show up, but then we remembered they had their own show — in Santa Barbara, I think? — that night...oh well. -

I don't have a baseline in terms of her regular performances at HSBG, so I couldn't say if this one was pretty typical (or worse or better, for that matter). But I can say I was hoping for a little more collaboration; sort of expected at least one guest to join her at some point. And also there wasn't an encore, which again I don't know if that's typical or not because they have to close the park. Also, she seemed to be having some trouble with her in-ear monitors and keeping her guitar in tune at points. Didn't keep a setlist, but off the top of my head I remember her doing Orphan Girl, My -
Haha, tell us how you really feel! Guess Tweedy won't be booking that In Zed tour anytime soon, then?

I noticed that you were enthusiastic about those fellows! Certainly one couldn't help but be charmed by their enthusiasm and energy. Musically, I had some thoughts that I'll keep to myself but especially given all the bluegrass to come, it was definitely something different...
