  1. I knew this question would come up. I remember they had played it at the last show of the Vic Kicking Television run in 2005 when they were having major technical issues and had to sort of do an impromptu acoustic set. (Jeff also crowd surfed, but that's another story.) The listing on Wilcoworld (via Wilcobase) also shows they did it at an in-store performance in Minnesota in 1995. That was also likely a stripped-down show. Maybe even a Jeff and Jay acoustic thing. So to answer the question, it depends on what you define as "full band." Because even last night, even though the full band st
  2. Sorry, just saw this. Promising was your question mark. Mods, maybe merge this with the other thread?
  3. Ok, just for accuracy's sake, here was the complete setlist as played for Ryman Night 1 (band went on at 7:41 and went off for the final time at 9:55): Forget The Flowers Solitaire Muzzle Of Bees Cars Can't Escape One By One Pick Up The Change (no harmonica arrangement) Hummingbird Art Of Almost I Might I Am Trying To Break Your Heart> One Wing Via Chicago Whole Love Box Full Of Letters I'm Always In Love Promising Ashes Of American Flags How To Fight Loneliness Jesus, etc. Born Alone The Late Greats Heavy Metal Drummer A Magazine Called Sunset Dawned On Me A Shot In The Arm ------------
  4. My biggest problem with it was that it was just a lazy piece of criticism. I don't mind criticism of bands I like if the points are well thought out and/or conveyed. This piece, IMHO, was neither. The author wanted to slag the box set or be a wiseass about it, but the best they could do was some kind of inane list? As an admirer of well-written material, it was just kinda weak. Or maybe it just didn't jibe with my sense of humor (but I do think I have one).
  5. I'm sure some people saw this one...did you know Wilco are posers for calling themselves a Chicago band? http://blogs.riverfronttimes.com/rftmusic/2014/10/77_things_id_rather_do_than_listen_to_the_upcoming_77-song_wilco_rarities_box_set.php?page=2
  6. I made it, after hearing about it just in time to get there. They played three songs unplugged (well, four of the five of them): Go Home, Turn It Around and It Don't Matter Anymore (the Buddy Holly cover they did with J.D. McPherson that will be on the Wildewoman deluxe edition). The sundae, I'm pretty sure, was two scoops of Whiskey and Pecan and a scoop of Bourbon Caramel with some whipped cream. Tasty, but then again most stuff at Jeni's is.
  7. You sort of knew Jeff and Spencer would be there if they could to return the favor for Lucius singing at all those recent TWEEDY shows (and on the album, of course). Lots of fun! And the dedication to Susie for Wildewoman Wednesday was very touching and emotional.
  8. The technical issues weren't too severe, but just enough to kind of hamper the flow of the set at times. Still always great to see her, though. And we were hoping Dave (and/or Gill) was going to show up, but then we remembered they had their own show — in Santa Barbara, I think? — that night...oh well.
  9. I don't have a baseline in terms of her regular performances at HSBG, so I couldn't say if this one was pretty typical (or worse or better, for that matter). But I can say I was hoping for a little more collaboration; sort of expected at least one guest to join her at some point. And also there wasn't an encore, which again I don't know if that's typical or not because they have to close the park. Also, she seemed to be having some trouble with her in-ear monitors and keeping her guitar in tune at points. Didn't keep a setlist, but off the top of my head I remember her doing Orphan Girl, My
  10. Haha, tell us how you really feel! Guess Tweedy won't be booking that In Zed tour anytime soon, then?
  11. What can I say? Guess I must have learned it from Hank Williams.
  12. I noticed that you were enthusiastic about those fellows! Certainly one couldn't help but be charmed by their enthusiasm and energy. Musically, I had some thoughts that I'll keep to myself but especially given all the bluegrass to come, it was definitely something different...
  13. A glorious day in Golden Gate Park, and an interesting slot for the Tweedy band's West Coast debut (as it were) on a stage made up of mostly very traditional bluegrass acts and traditional festival headliner/closing act Emmylou Harris. In fact, the host of the Banjo stage introduced Tweedy in part as "something for the youngsters." When was the last time that happened? Can't say a huge portion of the crowd was into the set — we saw at least one older gentleman looking Jeff up on Wikipedia — but there were pockets of fans scattered around as you would expect at a festival. Consider this a tea
  14. I'll assume you're not being sarcastic, so perhaps you didn't know that Nels' wife is Yuka Honda of Cibo Matto.
  15. This link probably should go in the Calvin College thread (Grand Rapids, MI 10/2), fwiw.
  16. I hear that's a good one...
  17. Wait, so was this the live debut of Pigeons then? I hadn't seen it on any other setlists from this current run, but maybe I missed it. Certainly it hasn't been done very often, so you got a Sukierae rarity!
  18. Sounds like a pretty cool bill, Lou! Where was that? I'm curious to know where Jeff heard Love Like A Wire since it doesn't appear that Izzo ever released a recording of it anywhere (it's not on her one solo record). I'm guessing maybe it was a demo of hers he heard at some point in the late 90s Chicago scene, but I'd be interested to know.
  19. Man, sorry to hear that the show wasn't too well-attended. And that the crowd was a bit subdued. I felt the same at the State in Portland on Sunday night — I heard there were only two guys who stood during California Stars — but maybe that's just the vibe of these shows to a certain extent. Too bad, though, because for as much joking as Jeff does about the abundance of waltzes, they do really rock out sometimes. So lucky you got Secret of the Sea! I'm not sure people realize how much of a rarity that one is, especially solo. (And just like there's only only one key in Give Back The Key To My
  20. Jeff even acknowledged as much as one point, saying that the free show "might have taken a bite out of the paid one" and joking that "I do all our booking, so that might have been an oversight on my part."
  21. Guess I gotta start one of these threads! Kind of a weirdly subdued "crowd" (well, what crowd there was), but a fun show nonetheless. More later if no one else chimes in. But for now, here was the complete setlist as played: Nobody Dies Anymore Honey Combed Flowering Summer Noon World Away New Moon High As Hello Desert Bell new song-Why Why Why Love Like A Wire [Diane Izzo] Hazel Low Key Fake Fur Coat Diamond Light, Pt. 1 I Am Trying To Break Your Heart* Forget The Flowers* Passenger Side* Gun* Please Tell My Brother* Hesitating Beauty* Kicking Television* ("hotel lobby" version) Theologians

    Wilcobase?

Miss you and the site, Rob! I know it's on Wilcoworld in some form, but it's nowhere near as user-friendly! Hope you're well...
  23. Hey notary (or mods, if you can)...you might want to change the date to 9/27 on the thread title. It may save some confusion in the future.
