Kudos to Danny for "using" his position as a film critic and his fairly insider-y Wilco status (he's the brother of Mrs. Tweedy, for anyone who might not know) to give us a very nice interview! Ryan Bingham's fiddle player is named Richard Bowden. And not to nitpick here, but I've seen it elsewhere too and I just have to say that the song is Give Back The Key To My Heart. Apparently Beck has been playing Cosmos in some of his sets recently (including the one at Le Poisson Rouge on Friday night) so I guess it's not as out of left field as I also initially thought when they started playing it. Great choice for a collaboration, though since Beck was the one who had been doing it, it was a little weird that he seemed to struggle a bit with the lyrics. But then again, as someone pointed put to me, he kind of has that ramshackle vibe with some of his own songs... I love Cosmos, too. To be fair, though, they didn't totally nail it. Seemed like Beck struggled with a couple of lines. They should have let Pat sing a verse, IMHO. They did rip Yer Blues, though. And I was glad to finally see Tomorrow Never Knows, which is the only semi-regular collaboration I hadn't yet. Another fun night, despite a somewhat lame crowd.

MMJ's drummer Patrick did come in with a few folks, and they had a private hang in the music room (and were still in there when I split), but I got the sense it was more of a "get a look at the place" kind of thing. Great show and a gorgeous night, but the venue was packed (15,000, I heard) and full of people there to drink and talk and socialize. Not enough food and drink vendors. Guess it was OK up close, but could've been sucky in the back.

I wasn't necessarily suggesting that — given that Dylan has been playing more or less the same setlist every night (with one or two swapouts), I don't think it really matters to him where they are or who shows up — but I do wonder why he decides on any given night to have Jeff and Jim join him. My understanding of it is that Jeff/Jim don't get that much advance notice; at some point, maybe even once the show has already started, I think Dylan's bandleader or someone must communicate that Bob would like them to sit in that night and then they either are told or decide collectively what they'll

Before your question gets completely lost, it kind of depends on the venue and how tight its curfew is. Tonight (and last), it seemed like the show had to be over by 11 so everyone's sets got moved up a bit. So that meant that Ryan Bingham played from about 5:15-5:45, MMJ from 6-7:15, Wilco from 7:40-8:55 and Dylan from 9:20-11. If the curfew isn't as tight, then I would say the show would start as scheduled at 5:30 and you can go from there. The changeovers between sets for this tour have been pretty quick, fwiw. Hope that helps...

Typical Dylan, in some ways -- or maybe I'm unfairly judging -- to save a collaboration that a lot of people would love to see for a mid-week show in the most generic of sheds that didn't even open up its lawn section because too few people showed up (around 4,000, I heard, though I bet it was considerably less by the time Dylan went on).
