  1. Seriously, I can't imagine a more sterile surface than the cover of a magazine that's been in an airline seat pocket. I understand that airlines sell old copies to hospitals for use as surgical instrument tray liners.
  2. I think Jeff and the band should be in charge (as they are) of deciding whether or not it's okay for them to "allow" a fan's first impression of one of their songs to be from a commercial. None of my business. I heard all of the songs first on the internet stream and have listened to them a bunch of times since. Frankly, it means nothing at all to me what other people's associations with the song are. Not even a little tiny bit. All that matters is my own relationship with the song, which remains unchanged and undamaged.
  3. Oh, I absolutely agree that there's a chance of polluting the waters (the Johnny Cougar/Bob Seeger Chevy commercials being a great example) by licensing a song for a commercial. As I have yet to see a single Wilco VW commercial (during a span in which I've seen/heard various "Our Country" spots literally dozens of times), I honestly don't expect there to be the type of saturation necessary to "spoil" the song for any but those who are most obstinately against Wilco's music being used in ads for any reason. I just don't feel it's going to automatically color people's perceptions of/associations
  4. I don't buy the "giving up control of people's primary associations with your music" argument. You do that the second you release a song, either through a leak, on an album or as a single. People will make their own associations regardless of how the song is released - licensing it for use in a commercial only creates one more out of an infinite number of possibilities.
  5. You should put a Black Hole Sun smile on that cop lady.
  6. I am certain that was meant to be ironic in the face of the Paris apologist alias.
  7. He can correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't believe Calexico has ever "shaken off" Lili Taylor.
  8. I think that probably has a lot more to do with the fact that you're gonna have one Japanese player on a team and as many as a dozen Latinos on a team. If there are nine other guys around who speak Spanish (most of whom speak English, too), why do you need to provide an interpreter? If you're the only Japanese player on a team, how are you going to communicate if there's not an interpreter?
  9. Also, if Julio Lugo hadn't booted that ball in the fifth, Sir Stewart wouldn't even have batted a fourth time. Of course, if Julio Lugo hadn't played guitar at the high school dance after the original guitarist sliced his hand letting him out of the trunk of that car, his parents wouldn't have gotten together and he never would have existed in the first place.
  10. Yeah, but he also shook off the slider call to the previous batter and induced a groundout.
  11. Three complete games in 2004.
  12. Spitting out his gum so he wouldn't choke on it was a nice touch.
  13. Brought to you by Pillsbury and VW.
  14. If anyone can find a youtube of Francona after he got run last night, it would totally be worth your time. The only reason I was still up is because I wanted to see what happened with Ortiz's next at-bat after he got in the home plate ump's face over not asking for help when he clearly did not swing at a third strike earlier, and then I got to see the Francona thing. I seriously thought either he was going to have an aneurysm and die right on the field, or his head was going to asplode and he would die right on the field. Good shit.
  15. He's clearly already gotten (and rejected) an offer from misslaura.
  16. You bet your ass it would be.
