Was I in your dreams

I'd like to know

Did I touch your hand and did it feel like snow?

Try to understand while I've got you on the phone

Did I hurt you like I know I can?

Tell me why you'd ever want to leave your loving man

Try to understand, please try to understand

Was I in your dreams

Was I in your dreams

This dreamer died when his dreams died too

But I don't really mind if I dream about you.

I can't say what any of that means

Oh was I in your dreams, late last night?

Did you hold your pillow, did you squeeze me tight?

I just want to make everything alright

Was I in your dreams

Was I in your dreams

Was I?

Baby I'm afraid of a lot of things but

I ain't scared of loving you

And baby I know you're afraid of a lot of things

But don't be scared of love... 'cause

People will say all kinds of things

But that don't mean a damn to me

'Cause all I see is what's in front of me

And that's you

Well I've been dragged all over the place

I've taken hits time just don't erase

And baby I can see you've been fucked with too

But that don't mean your loving days are through

'Cause people will say all kinds of things

But that don't mean a damn to me

'Cause all I see is what's in front of me

And that's you

Well I may be just a fool

But I know you're just as cool

And cool kids, they belong together

first the mic then a half cigarette

singing Cathy's clown

that's the man she's married to now

that's the girl that he takes around town

she appears composed, so she is, I suppose

who can really tell

she shows no emotion at all

stares into space like a dead china doll

I'm never gonna know you now

but I'm gonna love you anyhow

now she's done and they're calling someone

such a familiar name

I'm so glad that my memories remote

'cause I'm doing just fine hour to hour, note to note

here it is the revenge to the tune

you're no good

you're no good, you're no good, you're no good

can't you tell that it's well understood

I'm never gonna know you now

but I'm gonna love you anyhow

I'm here today and expected to stayon and on and on

I'm tired, I'm tired

looking out on the substitute scene

still going strong

XO, mom, it's ok, it's alright, nothing's wrong

tell Mr. Man with impossible plansto just leave me alone

in the place where I make no mistakes

in the place where I have what it takes

I'm never gonna know you now

but I'm gonna love you anyhow

I'm never gonna know you now

but I'm gonna love you anyhow

I'm never gonna know you now

but I'm gonna love you anyhow

Someday,

Tomorrow will come.

Though I'm not afraid of today,

That's for sure.

You laughed at me,

For the last time.

You've got to understand,

It just wasn't in the plan.

To me, your life was ended,

When I said goodbye to you.

Ah ha ha, you laughed at me,

For the last time.

Now there's nothing left,

Tired of playing games.

Your mind is lost,

In a world that wasn't made for you,

Though I feel the same way, too

I still got some things to do.

From the valley towards the mountain

you get there through the valley

go, with your eyes down

and your there, and all you see

in a flash, in a stream,

golden and small

relentless and understood

in the hills - inside you

if there's something that you've missed

theres something you can(t) find - with time

we are less and less evolving

giants getting zoomed in

focus on the planets and the life

that you can't name

don't you know they have names

forget the mountains,

the depths of dreaming

let the valley forget me

if there's something that you've missed

or something you can(t) find - with time

through the valley

and each footfall

surrender just falls softly.

I'm sick and tired of hearing things

From uptight, shortsighted, narrow-minded hypocrites

All I want is the truth

Just gimme some truth

I've had enough of reading things

By neurotic, psychotic, pig-headed politicians

All I want is the truth

Just gimme some truth

No short-haired, yellow-bellied, son-of-tricky dick

Is gonna mother hubbard soft soap me

With just a pocket full of soap

Money for dope

Money for rope

No short-haired, yellow-bellied, son-of-tricky dick

Is gonna mother hubbard soft soap me

With just a pocket full of soap

Money for dope

Money for rope

I'm sick to death of seeing things

From tight-lipped, condescending mama's little chauvinists

All I want is the truth

Just gimme some truth

I've had enough of watching scenes

Of schizophrenic, egocentric, paranoic primadonnas

All I want is the truth

Just gimme some truth

No short-haired, yellow-bellied, son-of-tricky dick

Is gonna mother hubbard soft soap me

With just a pocket full of soap

Money for dope

Money for rope

Ah, I'm sick and tired of hearing things

From uptight, shortsighted, narrow-minded hypocritics

If you let me take your heart

I will prove to you

We will never be apart

If I'm part of you

Open up you eyes now

Tell me what you see

It is no surprise now

What you see is me

Big and black the clouds may be

Time will pass away

If you put your trust in me

I'll make bright your day

Look into these eyes now

Tell me what you see

Don't you realize now

What you see is me

Tell me what you see

Listen to me one more time

How can I get through

Can't you try to see that I'm

Tryin' to get to you

Open up your eyes now

Tell me what you see

It is no surprise now

What you see is me

Tell me what you see

Listen to me one more time

How can I get through

Can't you try to see that I'm

Tryin' to get to you

Open up your eyes now

Tell me what you see

Once I had my heroes

Once I had my dreams

But all of that is changed now

The truth begins again

The truth is not that comfortable, no

Mother taught us patience

The virtues of restraint

Father taught us boundaries

The knowledge we must go

I'm trying to protect my unity

That's when I reach for my revolver

That's when it all gets blown away

That's when I reach for my revolver

The spirit passes by this way

A friend of mine once told me

His one and only aim

To build a giant castle

And in it sign his name

Sign it with complete community

That's when I reach for my revolver

That's when it all gets blown away

That's when I reach for my revolver

The spirit passes by this way

Now that the sky is empty

And that is nothing new

Instead they look upon us

When they tell me

That we're nothing

I say!

That's when I reach for my revolver

That's when it all gets blown away

That's when I reach for my revolver

The spirit passes by this way

That's when I reach for my revolver

That's when it all gets blown away

That's when I reach for my revolver

The spirit passes by this way

Down in the graveyard where we have our tryst

The air smells sweet, the air smells sick

He never smiles, his mouth merely twists

The breath in my lungs feels clinging and thick

But I know his name, he's called Mr. D.

And one of these days he's gonna set you free

Human skulls is hangin' right 'round his neck

The palms of my hands is clammy and wet

Lord, I was dancin', dancin', dancin' so free

Dancin', dancin', dancin' so free

Dancin', Lord, keep your hand off me

Dancin' with Mr. D., with Mr. D., with Mr. D.

Will it be poison put in my glass

Will it be slow or will it be fast?

The bite of a snake, the sting of a spider

A drink of Belladonna on a Toussaint night

Hiding in a corner in New York City

Lookin' down a fourty-four in West Virginia

I was dancin', dancin', dancin' so free

Dancin', dancin', dancin' so free

Dancin', Lord, keep your hand off me

Dancin' with Mr. D., with Mr. D., with Mr. D.

One night I was dancin' with a lady in black

Wearin' black silk gloves and a black silk hat

She looked at me longin' with black velvet eyes

She gazed at me strange all cunning and wise

Then I saw the flesh just fall off her bones

The eyes in her skull was burning like coals

Lord, have mercy, fire and brimstone

I was dancin' with Mrs. D.

Lord, I was dancin', dancin', dancin' so free

I was dancin', dancin', dancin' so free

Dancin', dancin', dancin' so free

Dancin', dancin'

Pop tart

What's our mission

Do we know

But never listen

For too long

They held me under

But I hear

It's almost over

In Detroit

On a Memphis train

Like you said it's

Down in the heat and the summer rain of

The automatic gauze of your memories

Down in the sleep at the airplane races

Try to hold on

To this heart

A little bit longer

Try to hold on

To this love aloud

Try to hold on

For this heart's

A little bit colder

Try to hold on

To this love

Paperback scrawl your hidden poems

Written around the dried out flowers

Here we are still trading places

To try to hold on

Pop tart

Can you envision

A free world

Of clear division

For too long

They held us under

But I know

We're getting over

In Detroit

With the Nashville tears

Like you said it's

Down in the heat with the broken numbers

Down in the gaze of solemnity

Down in the way you've held together

To try to hold on

To this heart

A little bit closer

Try to hold on

To this love aloud

Try to hold on

For this heart's

A little bit older

Try to hold on

To this love aloud

And we are still alive

Try to hold on

And we have survived

Try to hold on

And no one should deny

We tried to hold onto the pulse of the feedback current

Into the flow of encrypted movement

Slapback kills the ancient remnants

That try to hold on

Try to hold on

To this heart alive

Try to hold on

To this love aloud

Try to hold on

And we are still alive

Try to hold on

And we have survived

Try to hold on

Pop tart

You never listen

Skinned knees

Try to hold on

Stop start

What's our mission

Skinned knees

Try to hold on

My love is in league with the freeway

Its passion will ride, as the cities fly by

And the tail-lights dissolve, in the coming of night

And the questions in thousands take flight

My love is a-miles in the waiting

The eyes that just stare, and the glance at the clock

And the secret that burns, and the pain that grows dark

And it's you once again

Leading me on - leading me down the road

Driving beyond - driving me down the road

My love is exceedingly vivid

Red-eyed and fevered with the hum of the miles

Distance and longing, my thoughts do provide

Should I rest for a while at the side

Your love is cradled in knowing

Eyes in the mirror, still expecting they'll come

Sensing too well when the journey is done

There is no turning back - no

There is no turning back - on the run

over the rooftops a plane in the sky

beat of a bass drum cars passing me by

under a bridge dark then back into light

a river of raincoats and a forest of faces

still for a moment then red into green

slow shuffling shoes whisper sight unseen

row upon row of houses return an empty stare

let the daydream for a little while longer

hope I'll never wake when I'm thinking about you

hope I'll never wake

cos now I'm thinking about you

two-minute hailstorm then melts into rain

sing me a rainbow it's sunny again

swallows overhead while the traffic snarls below

could I keep dreaming for a little while longer

hope I'll never wake

when I'm thinking about you

so that you know

I waited for you winterlong

You seem to be where I belong.

It's all illusion anyway.

If things should ever turn out wrong

And all the love we have is gone,

It won't be easy on that day.

Waiting to follow

Through the dreamlight of your way

Is not so easy for me now.

Half the time has passed away

Things we thought of yesterday

Come back now, come back now,

Ohhh.

Waiting to follow

Through the dreamlight of your way

Is not so easy for me now.

Half the time has passed away

Things we thought of yesterday

Come back now, come back now,

Ohhh.

I am thinking it's a sign

That the freckles in our eyes

Are mirror images and

When we kiss they're perfectly aligned

And I have to speculate

That God himself did make us into

Corresponding shapes like puzzles pieces

From the clay

True, it may seem like a stretch

But it's thoughts like this

That catch my troubled head

When you're away, when I am missing you to death

When you were out there on the road

For several weeks of shows

And when you scan the radio

I hope this song will guide you home

They will see us waving from such great heights

"Come down now," they'll say

But everything looks perfect from far away

"Come down now," but we'll stay

I've tried my best to leave

This all on your machine

But the persistent beat

Sounded thin upon listening

That frankly will not fly

You will hear the shrillest highs

And lowest lows with the windows down

When this is guiding you home

They will see us waving from such great heights

"Come down now," they'll say

But everything looks perfect from far away

"Come down now," but we'll stay...

We had an apartment in the city,

Me and loretta liked living there.

Well, it,d been years since the kids had grown,

A life of their own left us alone.

John and linda live in omaha,

And joe is somewhere on the road.

We lost davy in the korean war,

And I still don't know what for, don't matter anymore.

Ya' know that old trees just grow stronger,

And old rivers grow wilder ev'ry day.

Old people just grow lonesome

Waiting for someone to say, hello in there, hello.

Me and loretta, we don't talk much more,

She sits and stares through the back door screen.

And all the news just repeats itself

Like some forgotten dream that we've both seen.

Someday I'll go and call up rudy,

We worked together at the factory.

But what could I say if asks what's new?

Nothing, what's with you? nothing much to do.

So if you're walking down the street sometime

And spot some hollow ancient eyes,

Please don't just pass 'em by and stare

As if you didn't care, say, hello in there, hello.

Drink at the Bar Nothing bar anything

But the bottom step of the ladder

It keeps getting higher and higher

Dawn comes soon enough for the working class

It keeps getting sooner or later

This is the game that moves as you play

How does it feel to have your own bottle of booze

Behind the bar, how does it feel

To play cards with the barmaids while they work

At Jocko's Rocketship

Or The One Eye Jack

My Sin and The Lucky Star

A steady place to study and drink

Day old days

Ancient bloody mary bastards

In a hardcore blue collar bar

Here we sit, a shot and a beer

After another hard earned day

Dawn comes soon enough for the working class

It keeps getting sooner or later

This is the game that moves as you play

At the Hi-D-Hi

And The Hula Gal

Let me in, the voice cried softly,

from outside the wooden door.

Scattered remnants of the ship could be seen in the distance,

Blood stained the icy wall of the shore.

I'm the only one left. The storm, took them all,

He managed as he tried to stand.

The tears ran down his face.

Please, it's cold.

When he woke, there was no trace of the ship.

Only the dawn was left behind by the storm.

He felt the creaking of the stairs beneath him.

That rose, from the sea, to the door.

There was a sound at the window then.

The captain started, his breath was still.

Slowly, he turned.

From behind the edge of the windowsill,

There appeared the delicate hand of a child.

His face was flush and timid.

He stared at the captain through frightened eyes.

The captain reached for something to hold on to,

Help me, he whispered, as he rose slowly to his feet.

The boy's face went pale,

He recognized the sound.

Silently, he pulled down the shade against the shadow.

Lost in the doorstep of the empty house.

I'm trying to find my way home.

I'm sorry...

...and I miss you.

I miss you.

I've grown taller now.

I want the police to be notified.

I'll make it up to you,

I swear, I'll make it up to you.

I miss you. B)
