farva
Hearing Garcia sing that song is the best, especially on a top notch version like Fallout From the Phil Zone. You can stream the version I mention above here: http://www.archive.org/details/gd95-03-18....1362.sbeok.shnf "In a little hilltop village, they gambled for my clothesI bargained for salvation an' they gave me a lethal dose."(Shelter From The Storm) "He hears the ticking of the clocksAnd walks along with a parrot that talks,Hunts her down by the waterfront docks where the sailers all come in."(Simple Twist of Fate) Up on Housing Project HillIt's either fortune or fameYou must pick up one or the otherThough neither of them are to be what they claim(Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues) Edited August 21, 2006 by farva
Colb Masta M
"If anybody asks me: 'is it easy to forget?'I say 'it's easily doneyou just pick anyoneand pretend that you never have touched'." I prefer the Live '66 version where he sustains 'Touched' for a little longer.
dontknownuthin
Now you stand here sayin' you forgive and forget. Honey, what can I say?Yes, you, you just sit around and ask for ashtrays, can't you reach?I see you kiss her on the cheek ev'rytime she gives a speech- She's Your Lover Now Well, I wanna be your lover, baby,I don't wanna be your boss.Don't say I never warned youWhen your train gets lost.-It Takes A Lot To Laugh (It Takes A Train To Cry) Wow - you stole those two right off the top of my stack. I'm also a big fan of the leering "And yoouuuu, just what do you DO, anyway?" from SYLN. And: "But I ain't a judge, you don't have to be nice to meBut please tell thatTo your friend in the cowboy hatYou know he keeps on sayin' ev'rythin' twice to me..." Love the scorned and surly Bob. "You say my kisses aren't like his, I won't tell you why that is..." Great threads today people! Edited September 3, 2006 by dontknownuthin

mjpuczko
'yes i recieved your letter yesterday about the time the doorknob broke'desolation i can't narrow this song down to a line or two, here's the whole thing (one of my fave songs ever, so poetic) Lay down your weary tune, lay down,Lay down the song you strum,And rest yourself 'neath the strength of stringsNo voice can hope to hum. Struck by the sounds before the sun,I knew the night had gone. The morning breeze like a bugle blewAgainst the drums of dawn.Lay down your weary tune, lay down,Lay down the song you strum,And rest yourself 'neath the strength of stringsNo voice can hope to hum. The ocean wild like an organ played,The seaweed's wove its strands. The crashin' waves like cymbals clashedAgainst the rocks and sands.Lay down your weary tune, lay down,Lay down the song you strum,And rest yourself 'neath the strength of stringsNo voice can hope to hum. I stood unwound beneath the skiesAnd clouds unbound by laws. The cryin' rain like a trumpet sangAnd asked for no applause.Lay down your weary tune, lay down,Lay down the song you strum,And rest yourself 'neath the strength of stringsNo voice can hope to hum. The last of leaves fell from the treesAnd clung to a new love's breast. The branches bare like a banjo playedTo the winds that listened best. I gazed down in the river's mirrorAnd watched its winding strum. The water smooth ran like a hymnAnd like a harp did hum.Lay down your weary tune, lay down,Lay down the song you strum,And rest yourself 'neath the strength of stringsNo voice can hope to hum
jff
"I don't know anybody who's made a record that sounds decent in the past twenty years, really," the 65-year-old rocker said in an interview with Rolling Stone magazine. Noting the music industry's complaints that illegal downloading means people are getting their music for free, (Dylan) said, "Well, why not? It ain't worth nothing anyway." Atticus
I just wanted to thank everyone who has jumped on and laid out some of your favorites. I started the thread because I had had a bad day at work, was in the car, being negative and a bit impatient, etc., when "Tombstone Blues" came on the mp3 and then "Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues" and then others. And suddenly my piss-poor mood was gone, I was smiling, traffic was no longer an annoyance, and I went home and had a relaxing evening. It's been so great reading all these posts and having a flood of memories come up. Made me revisit a lot of the music.
Sir Stewart
"Well, I'm scufflin' and I'm shufflin' and I'm walkin' on briarsI'm not even acquainted with my own desires" I sing that line at least once a week in my head.

brittboas
I Want YouAs sung by Bruce Springsteen on Feb 5, 1975 "The guilty undertaker sighs, the lonesome organ grinder criesThe silver saxophone should say, I should refuse youYour cracked bells and washed out horns blow into my face with scornBut it ain't that way, I wasn't born to lose you" This IS the best cover Bruce has ever done,...and may just be my favorite cover by anyone, ever! I'll even supply this LINK, so you can hear it!! Courtesy of http://www.backstreets.com/btx/viewtopic.p...2052312#2052312 Edited August 23, 2006 by brittboas

rghammo
Sorry, I listened to it yesterday and it is a great cover. Bruce totally makes it his own. It's never been a favorite Dylan song of mine but that version may be better than the original. Or maybe I just like it better than the original. Yeah anyway, thanks for the link!
