Hard to imagine a coach having a 3 year record of 30-2-1 and not going to a single bowl game during that time period.

While that's a little egregious, there also weren't 400 bowl games back in the early 70s, so you could have a team go 10-1 and still miss out on a bowl.

The Ticket? That's pretty rough. You must really hate Musburger. He is pretty awful though.

I've hated Musburger since CBS' "The NFL Today" back in the '70s.

Since then, many sportscasters have come along whom I despise more than Musburger (Exhibit A: Bill Walton), but I still don't like him.

Actually, it used to be that the only bowl game Big Ten teams ever went to was the Rose, so only the conference champion played in a bowl. That was how there could be a 10-1 team that didn't play in a bowl.

edit: I looked it up on Michigan's athletics site and that conference-wide rule lasted until '75. Michigan went to the Orange Bowl in '76, the first year Big Ten teams were allowed to go to other bowls.

I just had a pretty heated discussion with a friend of mine regarding Bo's legacy.

So the question I pose to you is this: To what degree does the fact that Bo was responsible for firing Ernie Harwell tarnish his status to Michigan sports fans? I recognize that not all Michigan fans are Tigers fans, but there's a lot of crossover...and man, everyone I know was furious when Ernie got fired...

For Wolverine fans:

I tried like hell to find the game where Hayes tore up the yard maker/chains ('71,I believe) to no avail :hmm

According to Bo, he offered Harwell "the biggest contract of his career" and turned it down. He says Harwell called his own press conference to say that he had been fired after turning down the contract... Check out ESPN's front page and you can see Bo address this issue on the ESPN Motion thing...

I blame Bo very little, the Tigers were beginning to tailspin when he took over. Ownership issues caused the instability that would follow for the Tigers and am not sure anyone could have fixed that problem in the couple of years he was around. Hell, it took until this year - basically. I was about crying listening to the Jim Rome show today when he was reading all those emails about Bo.

From Friday's Plain Dealer:

Revulsion is Dead set

Columbus punk rock band's whole reason for being is to express hatred for that school up north

Friday, November 17, 2006

Jodie Valade

Plain Dealer Reporter

Bo Biafra met Bo Schembechler once.

That's what he says, at least. Biafra says he was about 4 years old when he asked the legendary Michigan coach for an autograph. That's when the story gets fuzzy. Biafra's version includes something about kerosene and blazing fires and, most of all, not getting that autograph. And how all that is the root of his hatred for the coach that inspired the name of his band, the Dead Schembechlers.

Biafra says all this with tongue firmly planted in cheek -- don't get mad Michigan fans, it didn't really happen -- but he won't break character to tell the truth of who he really is or what he really does. His character is the lead singer of the Dead Schembechlers, a punk band in Columbus. The rest of the band includes guitarist Bo Thunder, bassist Bo Vicious, and drummer Bo Scabies, and this week, leading up to the Ohio State-Michigan game, is their Super Bowl week.

Q: Tell me how the Dead Schembechlers began.

A: The band first formed in 1990 out of many other groups in the central Ohio music scene that we call Wolverine Hate Core. This would be rock based on the hatred of the Michigan Wolverines. Some people refer to us as a super-group of that scene. We recorded our first single, "I Hate Michigan." It's a beautiful 15-second song.

Q: You guys are all named Bo, but all dress like Woody Hayes. Why?

A: The outfits are to pay tribute to Woody, the greatest man in the history of Western civilization. But we realize there's a yin and a yang, good and bad inside of all people. To present that duality of man, we all dress like Woody but go by the name of Bo. One is good, one is the embodiment of evil.

Q: Bo Schembechler recently had a health scare where the 77-year-old had to have a pacemaker inserted, and said he thought he was going to die. Did you feel bad at all about your band's name when you heard that?

A: I will go on the record and I will say this: Bo Schembechler can never die. Bo Schembechler is immortal in the same way that Woody Hayes can never die. These men are giants from the last 100 years. One good, one evil. But both giants. As long as there are kids willing to kick a pigskin around on an autumn afternoon and fight like dogs for the victory, Woody and Bo will remain immortal.

Q: How, exactly, did Michigan Hate Core music begin? There are more bands that play music like yours?

A: It traces its musical roots back to the late 1800s. Certainly it wasn't called Wolverine Hate Core back then, but it's all part of the hatred of Michigan. By the way, regardless of what your readers in Cleveland might believe, the Ohio State Buckeyes have never been defeated by the Michigan Wolverines.

Q: What?

A: Many people think they have, in fact, been defeated. They are misinformed by the International Wolverine Conspiracy. This is an ultra-secret organization led by a group of power-mad Michigan graduates who use the football program as a tool of destruction. They cause a lot of things. Global warming -- that's the fault of the International Wolverine Conspiracy. The assassination of JFK? Wolverine Conspiracy. There are many others.

Q: How are they able to convince the entire world that Ohio State has lost 57 times to Michigan in 102 meetings?

A: They use mind-controlling drugs distributed through air and water in stadiums. As soon as flying became available, they used crop dusters. In radio, you have Wolverine announcers calling the game. And once TV came about, well, they can do anything on TV. If you can make Elijah Wood look like a hobbit, you can make it look like Michigan won. They use that CGI trickery to alter stuff. The Wolverines have never defeated the Buckeyes.

Q: If you say so. You guys have such strong feelings about Bo Schembechler. How do you feel about Lloyd Carr?

A: Lloyd Carr is a loser. They should tattoo "loser" on his forehead. But I hope he never goes away. He's been one of my favorite punching bags in my lifetime for the Ohio State Buckeyes. He's one of those Bozo the Clown inflatable things you get in the first grade. What's more fun that punching the clown? Lloyd Carr is our clown to punch.

Q: Did everyone in the band go to Ohio State?

A: We don't like to talk too much about personal stuff because our very lives are in danger from the International Wolverine Conspiracy. We do have lives outside the Dead Schembechlers, but we don't acknowledge them.

Q: Uh, OK. A lot of your songs have some lyrics that can't be printed in a family newspaper. Did you ever think of cleaning it up a little so your band would have more universal appeal?

A: We realize there is very little chance the OSU marching band is going to go out there and play our song "Michigan Stadium is a Pile of [expletive]." A lot of the songs are adult content. But a lot of the stuff is fine. We do get tons of radio play.

And we have plenty of songs that are very short and appealing. We will be recording a live album Friday at the Hate Michigan Rally, tentatively to be titled "Under a Scarlet Red Sky." We will be breaking out a new song called "Sweater Vest." The lyrics are very simple: "Gonna get me a sweater vest. Jim Tressel's the best. Bucks better than the rest. Gonna get me a sweater vest."

The Dead Schembechlers will play at The Hate Michigan Rally at Newport Music Hall in Columbus at 8 p.m. Friday. More information about the band is available at www.deadschembechlers.com

They had Bo Biafra on WDFN in Detroit a couple of days ago and he was hilarious - he played the role perfectly and I guess that had a nice tribute to Schembechler on their website yesterday but not many people got to see it because the traffic overwhelmed them.

Dead Schembechlers disband...

Bo's namesake punk group to disband

I saw the tribute on their site yesterday, and now this.

As a Michigan fan, I have to say ... these guys have handled this with class every step of the way. They could have gone such a different direction with Bo's death, but they've steered clear of every opportunity to be crass or callous. It was all in good fun while it lasted, and now it's over and they'll move on. Good for them, and I hope they still play together in some other incarnation, even if it takes the form of another anti-Michigan band.

Haven't seen any score predictions yet. Guess you hardcore fans don't want to jinx anything. I have no allegiances so I'll say 34-24 Buckeyes. I think it will be close throughout, but I can't pick OSU to win and Michigan to cover.

Congrats to the Buckeyes. Here's hoping we get another shot at them in Glendale. If not, the Rose Bowl is a pretty nice consolation prize.

Nice game, Michigan.

Immediately after the game, my bro-in-law and I were discussing the possibility of a rematch and, after watching that game, we were seriously pulling for Rutgers to run the table and sneak into the championship.(no disrespect to Rutgers) :lol

With a day or two now to think about it, I don't have any strong feelings one way or another about who I want to see OSU play in the championship. A rematch with Michigan would definitely add a unique twist to the rivalry, to say the least. I'm betting you'd get a totally different kind of ballgame the next time around--could be interesting.

Tell you what, if Michigan wins the rematch, I vote that they rent out a stadium at a neutral site--maybe Indianapoils or something--and play Game 3 to settle it. :rock

Seconded, but let's play it in the Superdome. Rejuvinate the N.O. economy and all.

I really hope they don't do a rematch. I can't think most people around the country don't want to see these two teams play again. Michigan lost. If Texas was a 1 loss team, would we be saying they deserve a rematch?
