poonkorama
I've heard nasty stories & allegations on GD boards before, but of course it's all speculation (third-hand as well). All I can say is it must have been some heavy shit because no one in his right mind would let a guy this good go.Really a shame. Yeah, I've heard that Kimock is an ultra-perfectionist and that he can be pretty difficult to work with at times (similar to the reputations of Arthur Lee and Kevin Shields). Lammycat
Yeah, I've heard that Kimock is an ultra-perfectionist and that he can be pretty difficult to work with at times.I've seen Kimock about a dozen times in various bands, most recently a few months ago with Stephen Perkins' band, Banyan (saw Banyan again Friday night, as well, and got to chat up Mike Watt between sets backstage). He has a reputation as being difficult to work with. I've met him a few times and he seemed like a decent guy, but folks I know who have worked with him say he can be pretty ornery. The Phil Lesh thing supposedly had a lot to do with SK and Phil's wife from a professional standpoint.... Alas, his guitar playing is commendable. While it tends to be a little over-the-top for my personal tastes, there's no denying he's extremely accomplished as a guitarist.
cwnorman
Yes that photo above is him - taken in a Holiday Inn room if I recall. There is a book about him out now that I would like to read. Has anyone mentioned Peter Green? Sorry about the size of that pic folks. It was Skydog Allman and I do think it was a Holiday Inn room. Jim marshal said it was one of his favorite pictures. WaronWar
Verlaine is amazing. I'd say the best of all time would be John Fahey acoustic ofcourse. Finally, someone knows what their talking about. Verlaine is amazing just listen to both Televison records and his solo collection. John Fahey is fantastic on acoustic. Also, add in Nels Cline especially the album Destroy All Nels Cline. and: Thurston Moore/Lee RanaldoJim O'Rourke-His acoustic playing on "Bad Timing" is greatIra KaplanDerek Bailey I can't believe I forgot to add D. Atticus
to those who have endorsed clapton for this moniker, what's the argument? I'm not saying he's not talented, but the greatest? 4 pages and no mention of this guy? tone, tone, tone, tone, tone, tone, tone, tone.... (tone)

Sweet Papa Crimbo
i'd say for me it would be without a doubt stevie ray vaughan. (i'm afraid all of you are going to say nels) This is a bit like asking who is the greatest baseball player of all time. There is way too much grey area in the question. Best Rock Guitar player? Lead or Rhythm? Shredder or Blues?Best Jazz Guitar player? Fusion, Rhythm ....?And don't forget Country players...Classical? However, people do love lists.. darkstar
4 pages and no mention of this guy? Exactly!!! My thoughts as I was checking out all the posts. I would add Garcia, Keef, and of course Clapton to the list. Also consider Junior Brown he of the "guit-steel" fame. The man can truly shred like a bastard on that thang! Kalle
Johnny Greenwood?
Sweet Papa Crimbo
Johnny Greenwood? Are you criticizing/questioning the choice or being a tool and noting I mispelled JONNY Greenwood? If it is the former...I suggest that any questioning of one's choice of the greatest Guitaist(s) is as silly as the idea of chosing the greatest Guitarist(s) of all time. It if is the latter...give me a fucking break.
caliber66
I think he may be asking who Jonny Greenwood is.

napoleon
well when i made this thread i meant it to be more of an opinion thing. i know theres no way to say who the best guitarist is. maybe i should have "your favorite guitarists" instead.
Lammycat
How about a "Greatest Juggler" thread? Those always spark great debate.

bobbob1313
to those who have endorsed clapton for this moniker, what's the argument? I'm not saying he's not talented, but the greatest? Listen to his work in the 60's. Listen to Cream. Listen to his blues work. Listen to Cream. Listen to Derek and the Dominoes. Listen to Cream. For god's sake, listen to Cream. This is a bit like asking who is the greatest baseball player of all time. Not really. I mean, pretty much every reliable statistic will say Babe Ruth is the greatest player of all time. Thats the difference. There are no stats for guitar. No sabermetrics detailing their ability to move up and down a scale. You are comparing apples and plutonium here. A better analogy is like asking who the greatest bassist or drummer or singer is.
cryptique
Listen to his work in the 60's. Listen to Cream. Listen to his blues work. Listen to Cream. Listen to Derek and the Dominoes. Listen to Cream. For god's sake, listen to Cream. All of my favorite guitar work on that record is Duane Allman's. Cream ruled, but Clapton still wouldn't be my pick. Or even in my top 5. bobbob1313
He's probably not my pick, but he's definetly in my top 5. I'd probably go with John Mayer or James Blount, personally.
