a friend of mine loved mermaid ave and influenced me to buy it. california stars really hooked me- i was speechless. a couple months later, i got my hands on a copy of yhf from a friend who got it from someone at columbia records when the record was being shopped around. i was insane about u2 at the time so i didnt really pay TOO much attention to it- i loved yhf but it didnt sink in until i saw them in hob anaheim. 20 bucks! those were the days. you could even still get the front row 10 minutes before they went on. one thing i recall about the show is that i thought jeff tweedy was totally scary. his cigarette was barely hanging onto his lip and i thought he looked mad.

My second show, November 11, 1999, has the exact same setlist at wilcobase, but I know it was different...one of those shows they opened with Via Chicago, I swear.

They opened with Via Chicago on 11/17/1999. Jay just wailed out on the intro guitar hook. You just knew they were up to no good. They were awesome!

While I had heard Wilco on 'XRT many many times and liked them greatly (as well as UT before them), I had never seen the band live until 2004:

However, while I enjoyed the show a lot (and it had many of my future favs, including Pot, Cure, Ashes and Fearful) I did not fully get the power and magnificence until I happened to go to the Jazz Fest in NO the following year and they played the night before at the Palace Theatre. I stood right behind bbop and didn't know it. I think I fell in love with the band somewhere around Hell is Chrome :lol

I saw another from the Being There tour, one with two Passenger Sides but I forget that date. I wasn't really sure what to make of Summerteeth when it first came out - thought it was way overproduced, and aside from Jeff & Jay at the Mountain Aire Festval, I didn't see them again until I moved to Chicago and say them for free in Grant Park.

My girlfriend got me into Wilco with "How to Fight Lonliness". Since then, I've seen Wilco twice (and counting). Brown University in Providence, RI4/20/06, and Pines Theater in Florence, MA 7/16/06. Front row, center for both, got Jeff's set list and pick in the last.

My first show was 8-6-04, Portland, ME. I had a chance to go 6-24-03 but ended up being out of town. They were supposed to open for Sonic Youth, who didn't show up, so they played a much longer set than anticipated. I was also at the Pines Theater this July.....very good show. Nels was great.
