embiggen
I have enjoyed Mike E's music for some time now. He's really quirky and I saw the Eels put on a rocking good show this past Summer. But many of the songs that rotate randomly on my player from Daisies of the Galaxy and Bright Lights are just damn depressing and I end up skipping over them. I know he's been through a lot of shit, but man. thoughts? opinions? concerns?

embiggen
I feel the same way about Beck's Sea Change. there are excellent tunes all over it but it's got the same sad malaise to it.
pnêyu
When E showed up unannounced at the last Largo show of 2006 (December 22), he introduced a song by saying that it sums up how he feels about the holidays. The tune: "It's a Motherfucker." It's a baffling but intriguing combination: the sad songs, the upbeat tunes, and the wry persona. But it works for me.
quarter23cd
I have been unable to listen to any Eels after Electroshock Blues. That record bummed me out so much I probably still haven't recovered.
TheMaker
I love Eels. That said, I am completely unable to listen to "Things the Grandchildren Should Know." I know I run the risk of revealing too much about myself by saying this, but it basically describes my life to a perfect t. I was paralyzed the first time I heard it. It's as if E looted my brain for that fucking thing.
myboyblue
I have about as much Eels on my iPod as anything. However, I have to be in the right mood to listen to some of his stuff. Genius, yet depressing at times.
airtaco
I love Eels, but I also feel as if E is the one man whose records I buy out of pity. I listen to Electro Shock Blues and think, "I am SO sorry; I will buy all records to make you feel better."

Genius, yet depressing at times. me too. eels are the top band on my last.fm, but i don't feel like i listen to them a lot. i tend to go through phases where i listen to nothing but eels for days at a time... Beltmann
I don't have to be in the right mood to enjoy the eels. No great work of art is ever truly depressing--the subject matter might be difficult, but I always feel lifted by the sense of artistic accomplishment. You know what I do find depressing, though? Bad music.
KevinG
His most fun work is as MC Honky. That makes me smile everytime I listen to it.
tongue-tied lightning
love the big E, I'm usually in a mother fucker life mood anyways, so it works for me.
MattZ
That guy bares so much when he writes/sings/performs that he might as well perform his concerts buck-naked. Seriously. I am with TheMaker -- Things The Grandchildren Should Know is one of the most haunting and perfect songs I know. Knocks me out every time. When I try to bare my soul and write it comes out forced and cliched. I don't know how he does it. But I am glad he does. And thanks again Beltmann for turning me on to him awhile back. 'Railroad Man' is also one of my favorite Eels track. His albums are one of the ten or so artists that I will buy forever regardless of reviews, previews, etc. His albums get purchased without even so much as a listen. mpolak21
I am just starting to leap into E's work. I loved Novacaine for the Soul when it came out and had a couple assorted singles on my ipod, like Saturday Morning for awhile. Just an incredible talent, I'm really thrilled to be getting into him finally, though a little disapointed I never sought him out any further. --Mike

Beltmann
I teach high school. A few days ago I was walking to my classroom and, to my disbelief, heard "Losing Streak" emanating from a science lab. I popped in to give the thumbs-up to the teacher, who shrugged... Then, from the back of the room, I saw one of my students from last year. He shouted, "Hey, Mr. B! Listen! I bought it the same day you told me about it! Great stuff!" They were listening to his iPod through the stereo system. Then I went upstairs, where my computer was shuffling songs. I walked in, and what was playing? "Losing Streak." Okay, not as cool as seeing E walking his dog, but still.
mpolak21
I figured I'd resurrect this thread as there's quite a bit of Eels related stuff being released. There's a greatest hits and a B-sides comp called Meet The Eels that came out this week (there's a new Jon Brion remix of Climbing Up To The Moon that's really good on the greatest hits disc) and E wrote a book called Things The Grandchildren Should Know, it's only out in the U.K. at the moment, I think it's being released in the states in October. And there's also this documentary done by the BBC Seven part documentary done by BBC about Mark Oliver Everett, aka E from Eels, and his father Hugh Everett who came up with the parallel universe theory. A great mix of science and music.
