M. (hristine
That'd be funny if it weren't so coddamned depressing. It wasn't meant to be funny. The Boomtown Rats song "I Don't Like Mondays" was inspired by a deadly shooting at a school.

owl
I don't care who you are, what your religion is, or where you come from, this ought to qualify as terrorism, and these crimes were committed with weapons of mass destruction. Watch the NRA say "If the school allowed students to arm themselves, this wouldn't have happened." On a side note, "Most Popular" item on CNN: "Deadly shooting at Virginia Tech". quarter23cd
Well, CBS just jumped in front with a bid of 30. This is unreal. I don't think I know anybody who is still there anymore, but at the time it seemed like probably 50% of the people I went to high school with went to college there. I've spent a fair amount of time down there and it is truly the last place you would imagine something like this would happen. (not that you'd imagine it would happen anywhere, I guess) Words fail me.
Atticus
just received the following text message from my sister-in-law: "I am off campus now and safe" what a crazy world

Guest Jules
32 now and more people in critical condition. Terrible. Strange, too, with the 2 separate shootings and apparently a couple hours in between?
Chendizzle
Why is our country so violent? This is terribly sad.
darkstar
32 now and more people in critical condition. Terrible. Strange, too, with the 2 separate shootings and apparently a couple hours in between? Apparently they are saying it was one gunman, in 2 seperate locations with the time lapse in between. That dude must have had a big headful of snakes.
Calexico
Seems like these things come around every few years. Terrible tragedy. The first shootings were two hours before the second batch. What the hell were the campus cops and the real cops doing in that time?
owl
That's what I was thinking. The scariest part is- why didn't they put the whole campus on lockdown after the first shooting??

What the hell were the campus cops and the real cops doing in that time?I've been wondering that too ... and I'm also wondering why 8:00 classes were apparently allowed to commence even though they hadn't caught the shooter. I guess maybe they hadn't been able to adequately notify the campus to stay inside, and students went to class unaware ... but I have a feeling there will be some criticism of the campus' emergency procedures when this is all said and done. Without a doubt and deservedly so. Who took it upon themselves to try and warn students by e-mail? I never heard something as idiotic. There will be plenty blame apportioning and mud slinging when this is over. Some one really had it in for this school too. Two bomb threats in less than two weeks as well? bobbob1313
The first thing I did when I heard about this was check my friend up at VT's facebook to see if I could check up on her. SHe's alright. This is awful. Security on college campuses is a joke, really. Down here at FIU we have 3 cops on duty at all times. For a school of 30,000 people. What really scares me is that on saturday someone broke into my room and stole my laptop. Imagine if they had done it with the intent to harm me and I was in there... cryptique
cbsnews.com says that the shooter has been described as a "young Asian male." Given past precedent, I expected this to be another disgruntled white guy. Not that there's any particular racial element to mass murder. edit: I forgot about John Muhammad and Lee Malvo. darkstar
This thing is going to go down as the worst mass shooting in US history, worse than that Luby's shooting in Texas back in '91. Some reports are also saying as many as 50 people were shot, and that this nut case may have been targeting people and not shooting at random. It's sort of hard trying to wrap your mind around this. caliber66
They're saying there's no evidence of terrorism. How are we defining terrorism, exactly -- and how is this not terrorism?I'm sure they mean that there's no evidence that this guy was not trying to advance any specific cause through his actions. That kind of terrorism.
darkstar
They're saying there's no evidence of terrorism. How are we defining terrorism, exactly -- and how is this not terrorism? I'm guessing (just my opinion) it's not a terror act as we perceive that term in a 9-11 sense. But then again if you define the term as an act that is designed to cause horror, fear, and confusion it sure as hell seems like it is a terror act. Who knows? Maybe it was some whacked out student that was freaking out about exams or some shit like that? Either way it's pretty fucking evil and sad.
