Mr. Heartbreak
How about this: my preferred lineup of all time didn't have a Jay or a Nels in it. I saw them 3 times in 2002.See, there was this guy named Leroy Bach who would play rhythm while Jeff played lead, and ... aah, forget it.

Szabo
I miss Leroy too, especially his cool hats. That multi-instrumentalist has style.... Yeah, Leroy's a pimp, basically Leroy is a pimp name. He is a great musician too, and he doesn't dance around with blankets draped around his back.
Sir Stewart
I didn't realize that Leroy's post-Wilco career involved pimping. That's an awful business, wtf.
noyes
what a thread. haha. i appears that people are acting like SBS is how Wilco is going to sound from now on.it's only the record Jeff wanted to make at this point in his life.every record has been different from the last and SBS's successor won't be any different. i certainly hope not.for the record, the album is definitely not their best effort, but it truly doesn't have to be.it's essentially a love letter to Sue, a simplistic album of simple lyrics and simple thoughts and vibes.take it for what it is, or leave it.i guess you'll have to wait for the next album.hopefully that one will be better. i sure hope so.but i took and am still taking this record in with open earsloving every second of goodness. but yeah, this is still wilco, the same great band. just toned down.lets hope for the better next time. as far as Jay getting back in the band goes, c'mon. the dude's gone.the band needs to evolve. become better without him. they already are. caliber66
but yeah, this is still wilco, the same great band. just toned down.Well, that's kind of the point of the thread, isn't it? It's not the same band, and it's never the same band, album to album.

nettles
Gave the album another full listen yesterday, in my opionion, it kind of stinks, but I still hold the band up very high because they've made a couple of records in the past that helped change my direction in life, and I think I'm happier person for it, or maybe there to blame! rockinrob
I think I found the answer to this whole thing. "Maybe you still love me, Maybe you don't. Either you will or you won't." Chill out and enjoy the new record. If you don't dig it, don't listen to it. I think it is awesome, just like every other record they've done, and at the moment, It is my favorite Wilco record. I think it is beautiful to hear amazingly talented musicians, playing some simple tunes together in a room, live. There isnt enough of that these days.
jimmyjimmy
I think I found the answer to this whole thing.Me too. Graft John Stirratts' disembodied head onto Jay Bennetts' body thereby retaining the only other original member while being able to reintroduce to, some degree, Jay Bennetts' musical prowess. yankee
every record has been different from the last and SBS's successor won't be any different. i certainly hope not. Yeah, that's exactly why I feel the need to own all the Wilco albums. With some bands, I can get by with just one of their albums or a "greatest hits" mix because the rest of their stuff isn't that interesting or just sounds like more of the same. I don't feel the need to own any Sun Volt because to my ear it sounds like recycled Uncle Tupelo but less interesting. For that matter, I saw Jay Bennet at Fitzgeralds a few months back. He sure can play, and some of the tunes were cool, but I didn't feel the need to buy his album. I guess Jeff's song writing is the common thread that keeps me interested in Wilco. And the fact that every album sounds different. I like the fact that the music evolves and the band is trying new things. Otherwise, I wouldn't need a new album. I'd just be satisfied with a collection of my favorite songs from past albums. Anyway, I can see why some people didn't like SBS. On first listen, I wasn't sure what to think. But I had to listen to it since I was supposed to play some of the stuff for a CD release party and needed to learn how to play it. The more I listened, the more it grew on me. Sure, i like some songs more than others (You Are My Face is my current favorite), but overall, I now really like it. Also, I can see why some people don't dig Shake it Off. I think maybe you have to see this one live to fully appreciate it. From a musical standpoint, it's a really hard song to play! The timing is very odd, you've got to feel it more than count it. But when it rocks live, it really rocks. It's like, "wait for it . . . . wait for it . . . oh, there it is . . . almost . . . almost . . . little more . . . .OHHHHHH YEAAAAHHH that's the spot." It scratches that itch. Give it a chance live before your write it off, that's my suggestion. In any case, I think the fact that this question could inspire such intense debate says something positive about the band. Their work and their new creative directions continue to inspire intense interest and strong reactions, pro and con. And in my opinion, that's a good thing because it shows that they are creating art, not just cranking out more of the same "product."
darkstar
Ah well....if the boys release another new album sooner rather than later all of this will be moot and people will be praising or pissing that one...... My 2 cents is that this (SBS) is one helluva fine album and I will say that the current line up is my favorite version to date so take that with however many grains of salt you wish. It ain't perfect but it's pretty great.
