awatt
Happy for you LouB, though your absence will bring intelligent posts down a notch here, no doubt. I always enjoy reading your take on all the VC issues! What "field" will you be in, exactly?
kidsmoke
Congratulations, Lou! That sounds like a huge improvement, with a lot more independence to it. I hope the new position is peaceful and satisfying.

LouieB
What "field" will you be in, exactly?Education...the biggest snake pit there is. I won't talk about what happened after I started this thread, but the next month promises to be a mofo.... I am going to the child nutrition program, monitoring free and reduced lunch programs. I currently fund programs for low income students in Advanced Placement. LouieB
viatroy
ironic that education is a snake pit -- particularly your program. Reminds me of the old bumper sticker to the effect of "let the pentagon hold bake sales ..."

This is no joke, the schools here have nearly 2/3 of the students on free or reduced lunch. Not to mention the social worker & special education areas being dreadfully understaffed. It's a daily heartbreaking experience.
jenbobblehead
dear louie: lunch was my favorite part of the day in school!
awatt
I had no nutrition guidance when I was in school. I still remember the smell of that cafeteria in Van Nuys...

LouieB
ironic that education is a snake pit -- particularly your program. Reminds me of the old bumper sticker to the effect of "let the pentagon hold bake sales ..."Actually I think education in general is a snake pit, but particularly at my particular state agency...long story..but in general the parts of NCLB that most people know about has turned education into something other than it should be. Best of luck in what I imagine is an embarrassingly under-budgeted area of children's education. I hope it gets better for you.Actually Nutrition, the free and reduced lunch program is out of Dept of Agriculture and is one of the better funded programs. We at least recognize that kids need breakfast and lunch, but as mountain bed notes below, the rest of education is dramatically underfunded. Lou, we could really use you over here. This is no joke, the schools here have nearly 2/3 of the students on free or reduced lunch. Not to mention the social worker & special education areas being dreadfully understaffed. It's a daily heartbreaking experience.Just horrible. I agree.....the food programs work fairly well, but the education of kids...not so great. LouieB

LouieB
Hey Louie -- congrats! I hope you can shake a little sense into the school lunch program. Everytime I think of school lunches I now think of Supersize Me Ihave yet to see Supersize me. Making sense of the program is apparently quite a challange, with more regulations than many other programs, hence the need for lots of monitors, of which I will be one. I think my days of trying to make an actual change in things are diminishing. At least at the moment I have very little fight left, after what has been a fairly crazy couple years. I am sure I will get it back, but I just don't know. LouieB

LouieB
Years mired in bureaucracy will do that to a person.I have been mired in the educational bureaucracy three different ways... My job (16 years), my kids in school (lots and lots), and a stint on a Local School Council in Chicago, which is like a mini school board (13 years). I can't wait to get the hell out someday and never think about education again. LouieB
jenbobblehead
there was a great new yorker article last year in the education issue about changing school lunch program to reflect a healthy diet--i think it was in California. i can try to scan it in when i get to the office this week. LouieB
there was a great new yorker article last year in the education issue about changing school lunch program to reflect a healthy diet--i think it was in California. i can try to scan it in when i get to the office this week.I get the New Yorker, so I will look for it. There was also one in the Reader last week too, that was quite good. This should be an interesting change. Meanwhile I will be in Springfield for the next 2.5 weeks wrapping up my old job. LouieB
I am on my extended camp out in Springfield and it is amazing what knowing I am leaving this job makes. I actually don't need one medication (not Xanax, which I have never taken, but needed) that I have been taking for one year. LouieB
viatroy
what a difference a word makes. Im currently at my job that I left a month ago, and it's not nearly as boring/aggravating knowing I don't even have to be here.
jenbobblehead
i have been out of work for a month and a half almost, but just physically out of work. I'm emotionally still all wrapped up in it and still doing just about everything but physically planting trees that i would do if i wasn't out on disability. So, i'm not feeling a lot of that good feeling you guys are. But that's my fault. I could have completely cut off all contact with the office, but i'm just not good at that.
