Analogman
Which one do you have?
Littlebear
I think I used to have the 98 one (Big Beat UK), since I had purchased the newest version in 1999 or 2000. Hard to say if the sound is great since it's the only one I got. To me, it didn't sound perfect, but it was part of its charm. I don't think it ever sounded like Pet Sounds anyway. LouieB
Which one do you have?# Audio CD (March 26, 1998)# Original Release Date: 1968# Number of Discs: 1# Label: Big Beat UK Figures there would be a new one come out just as i get around to buying it. Somehow it is really really hard for me to think that this album is all that important. I mean come on..The Zombies?? I will let you know though. It has both the mono and stereo mixes....whatever. Analogman
I think it's right up there with all the other near concept/concept albums of the day. Plus, how many albums have a song in which a dude welcomes home his girlfriend from prison and also, a song about WWI?
bigideas
this album is amazing - no weak tracks! my first listen was via the Repertoire edition. it has tons of extra tracks all good. then later i got the great box set, Zombie Heaven, which is four discs within a beautiful bound book with lots of details. all the recorded output is in there and it's pretty much all good. one thing with the Rep version - it has a different version of one song as to how it was originally released...........it's been awhile, but one song had horns (i think?) dubbed on and the Rep version doesn't have these on there. without actually sounds better to me, but that is something to consider. of course, Zombie Heaven has everything. back when i bought it i think most versions were quite expensive, and i found Zombie Heaven for a relatively low price on eBay brand new. John Smith
Mine is on Fuel 2000 released in 2004 and sounds just fine. it has the album in mono and a whole bunch of out takes and stereo remixes.
Analogman
I have the greatest hits they put out - so maybe that is the one I will get.
m_to_the_c
I've got the 2004 reissue, but since I don't have anything else by them this one suits me (you know, how would you compare versions if you only have one?) Sound quality-wise it is excellent!
bedbug
Great album! One of my top 5. I unfortunately have nothing to add about the sound quality! one thing with the Rep version - it has a different version of one song as to how it was originally released...........it's been awhile, but one song had horns (i think?) dubbed on and the Rep version doesn't have these on there. lizish
Got the 30th anniversary edition with the stereo mix followed by the mono mix with a couple bonus tracks. It's alright and fairly good sounding. I think it might be the most historically accurate, if there is indeed such a thing, because from what I understand there were 2 mixes (stereo and mono) made in the sixties. lovely album. the zombie box is also essential and I can certainly hear where A C Newman draws inspiration. tongue-tied lightning
Saw these guys on our local PBS fundraiser. They had a British pop concert with all the classic bands playing. they maybe old, but they could still sing.

bigideas
Great album! One of my top 5. I unfortunately have nothing to add about the sound quality!"Maybe After He's Gone" ??? i think it might be This Will Be Our Year.the Mono is not only a different mix, but has added horn elements - i think the recorded it live as mixing to Mono, so these elements can't be redone for a Stereo mix, they are permenant. i would have to actually get out the discs/book to confirm though. LouieB
I have not heard this "classic" album but I have heard Time of the Seson about 4 trillion times (just heard it last at a restaurant that plays oldies) over the years and frankly the song is kind of lame all in all. Listen to the words sometime. I plan to play the entire album for the first time in my life sometime this week. LouieB
Analogman
Maybe it's like The Moody Blues - they went from Go No to Days of Future Passed (one of my favorite albums of all time). The Zombies, went from making pretty good British Pop to something more adult and meaningful - pretty cool I think.

It's an absolute classic ... one of the greatest albums ever recorded, imo.
tongue-tied
it's about as overhyped as Pet Sounds, it's also as solid as Pet Sounds.
jff
I have the Fuel version. It sounds fine to me, but I must say I prefer listening to "Five Live Zombies" and the compilation cd of their A & B sides (I can't remember the exact title).

Can't comment on which later remaster sounds best in this case, but seriously disqualify those earlier attempts. The technology wasn't there yet and you'll end up with a flat sounding, soulless piece of poo.

It's by far my least favorite on it. Not necessarily a bad song, but just #1 overplayed and #2 not quite as special as Care of Cell 44, Beechwood Park, TWBOY, etc ... it's about as overhyped as Pet Sounds, it's also as solid as Pet Sounds. IMO, Oddessey and Oracle makes good on the promises of Pet Sounds. There's something simlar about them, and something not similar. In an alternate universe O+O is an album every rock geek owns and worships, and Pet Sounds is the one most people have heard about here and there but have never listened to.
