Catcher Kevin Cash is currently being flown from Ottawa (where the PawSox play tonight) to Boston. Cash has experience over four major league seasons, three with the Blue Jays, one with the Devil Rays. He has 114 games and 472 major league at bats. That would mean Cash -- if he gets to Boston in time -- could start the second game of the doubleheader, with Jason Varitek having had to fill in today after Doug Mirabelli left with a calf injury.

While the 29-year-old Cash is not on the 40-man roster at this moment, a spot could be opened by transferring Brendan Donnelly from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day DL.

Perhaps that could mean another police escort from Logan...

Also, outfielder Bobby Kielty will be joining the Red Sox for tomorrow's game.

attn red sox fans: i have four nice seats to the O's sox match up on September 8 in Baltimore (ironically--the orioles fans have decreed that game day "Take Back Camden" day) game. The seats are two in one row, and two directly behind.

PM me if you're interested. I'll take face value via paypal ($40 per) and email you the "print at home" tix.

How are all those Red Sox fans out there enjoying Gagne?

Well, he's certainly going through an adjustment stage. He's blown three games already. I hope he can make adjustments and be ready for the post-season but if he continues the way he has for much longer he deserves to be benched, even though he was brought in to help the Sox in the post-season and to help give Okajima much needed rest.

Wily Mo hit his first dinger in a Nats uniform over the weekend in the midst of a Mets sweep. Overall it was a pretty miserable weekend for Nats fans, with several blown late-inning leads, a lot of bad officiating, a lot of runners left on base, and a stadium full of noisy Mets fans.

The only bright spot is that while the Nats were losing 4 straight, the Marlins were losing 5 straight, so the Nats remain just 1 game behind them.

Mets have just acquired Conine the Barbarian from the Reds.

The Mets announced they have officially changed their name to the "Florida Marlins of Queens" to coincide with this.

Sucks that "Mr. Marlin" has been a Phillie and a Met now in the past 2 years. Not his fault, it's been trades, but still. It's just not right.

A tribute to the Marlins' ability to develop players. If they had decent ownership, they would be one of the best franchises in the league.

Eh, I don't buy it. At least the development part. Alou, Castillo, Delgado, LoDuca, Conine, etc. These guys weren't developed there. The Marlins were just too cheap to keep them.

Huh? Castillo wasn't developed there? He was the very first player the Marlins ever signed. Conine had 111 ML at bats with the Royals before becoming an all star with the Marlins. The Marlins have developed a ton of great talent, that is one thing you cannot take away from that franchise. Say what you will about their ownership, fanbase, etc. but out minor league's have always been some of the best in the majors.

Fair point- I goofed on Castillo. But this discussion started with your reference to the "Florida Marlins of Queens" and a comment from Bjorn that the Marlins develop great talent and can't keep them. So my point (maybe unclear?) was that all the former Marlins on the Mets were players developed elsewhere (i.e., not in Florida). And that the Marlins were simply too cheap to keep them. Like I said, I was wrong with Castillo.

LoDuca, Alou, Delgado, etc. were not players developed by the Marlins that the Mets swept in and stole for a higher price. In fact, I think of LoDuca as a Dodger, Delgao as a Blue Jay and Alou as an Expo or Astro. And as for Conine, the dude came up with the Royals, so I'd say their development of him in the minors had a decent amount to do with his career. And that career has had one year of more than 100 RBIs. So, its not like we are talking about Stan Musial here.

I was just saying the Mets seem to be targeting former Marlins almost exclusively in the last 2 offseasons.

Is it possible that any of those performances came without a grand slam?

It's so crazy to hear - on my way to work I was listening to the radio recap of last night and "Garret Anderson had 10RBIs." Holy shit!
