sunkendave
Am I crazy for liking the live versions of these songs on kicking television versus there studio counterparts? For some reason I like them more. I have a friend who is a diehard that likes the studio versions more.
Wilco Worshipper
I think MOST live versions of any song are better
W(TF)
For recordings I tend to like the studio versions a bit better, but then again I'd rather see the band live than play a CD any day. So yeah you may be crazy, but only partly.
froggie
airline to heaven has never sounded better these days
zebra
It depends on the song, but usually the older songs sound better to me on K.T. I love "Ashes of American Flags" live.
TCP
I prefer Spiders live, for sure. Some of the Ghost tracks sound really good with Nels and Pat.

sunkendave
I was thinking mainly about spiders, handshake drugs, and the late greats.............these just sound better to me

jdmel
for some songs yes, at least thats what she said for me is way better on the live version... it captures the crowds energy well. Also it works well for songs you could have envisoned a spot for nels on in studio albums, like handshake drugs, (i actually think about that a lot, if the current lineup rerecorded certain songs how different they would be... but thats a whole different thread) but some are crisper and definitely better suited on the albums Spiders live i feel is much more about rocking out on an amazing jam song and the album version is a very polished jam song with a lot of technical thought behind it. quarter23cd
I was thinking mainly about spiders, handshake drugs, and the late greats.............these just sound better to meI will agree with you on these specific songs. Particularly Handshake Drugs. And I prefer just about any recent live version of Airline to Heaven to the album version. Other songs I'm kind of meh on. I've not yet heard a live version of Jesus, Etc that I prefer to the album version. And A Shot in the Arm is one of those songs that on some nights I love it and other times I just don't care for it. The version on KT isn't one of my favorites, but I guess it is ok.
TCP
Jesus etc is probably the only song I prefer live from YHF. Nels lap steel is incredible.
giraffo
am I the only person who thinks that the live arrangement of I'm the Man Who Loves You really pales in comparison to it's studio version? I always thought the most appealing thing when listening to that song was the harsh explosive guitar solo on top of a very upbeat up and down jangly backround music. When they play it live, it seems like they are all keeping the same type of arrangement but playing it electric, so you get hit with a very obnoxious wave of sound that sounds nothing like the original. I donno, it's probably my favorite Wilco song, and I just feel like it doesn't get the treatment it could with so many band members. It sounds like something that could be done with 3 guitars and a piano/keyboard, except one of the guitars a 12 string and the other a 6 string and then maybe Jeff/Nels on lead/electric. edit: and I hate Airline to heaven with such a passion... MattZ
I prefer most of the studio cuts on YHF to the live ones. Ashes of American Flags and IATTBYH being two resounding exceptions. It's funny, when I saw Wilco at Warsaw in brooklyn recently, they played Pot Kettle Black. I got really excited when I recognized it because (apparently) that was a song that had fallen out of rotation a bit. I have to admit that I was *slightly* disapointed when they finished it. Just didn't work for me. Oh well. Jesus Etc is another one that just doesn't work. I miss the strings. The live versions of AGIB and SBS tunes, however, slay me. Slay. Me.
