Synthesizer Patel
Sunday Bloody Sunday Yes...I can't believe the news todayOh, I can't close my eyes And make it go awayHow long...How long must we sing this songHow long, how long...'cause tonight...we can be as oneTonight... Broken bottles under children's feetBodies strewn across the dead end streetBut I won't heed the battle callIt puts my back upPuts my back up against the wall Sunday, Bloody SundaySunday, Bloody SundaySunday, Bloody Sunday And the battle's just begunThere's many lost, but tell me who has wonThe trench is dug within our heartsAnd mothers, children, brothers, sisters Torn apart Sunday, Bloody SundaySunday, Bloody Sunday How long...How long must we sing this songHow long, how long...'cause tonight...we can be as oneTonight...tonight... Sunday, Bloody SundaySunday, Bloody Sunday Wipe the tears from your eyesWipe your tears awayOh, wipe your tears awayOh, wipe your tears away(Sunday, Bloody Sunday)Oh, wipe your blood shot eyes(Sunday, Bloody Sunday) Sunday, Bloody Sunday (Sunday, Bloody Sunday)Sunday, Bloody Sunday (Sunday, Bloody Sunday) And it's true we are immuneWhen fact is fiction and TV realityAnd today the millions cryWe eat and drink while tomorrow they die (Sunday, Bloody Sunday) The real battle just begunTo claim the victory Jesus wonOn... Sunday Bloody SundaySunday Bloody Sunday... Oh, well, yeah. Fantastic. 'Sunday Bloody Sunday'. What a great song. It really encapsulates the frustration of a Sunday, doesn't it? You wake up in the morning, you've got to read all the Sunday papers, the kids are running round, you've got to mow the lawn, wash the car, and you think 'Sunday, BLOODY Sunday!'. Synthesizer Patel
I wish I owned a good sounding version of this Neil Young & Graham Nash song; it's very good: War Song In the morning when you wake upYou've got planes flying in the skyFlying bombs made toBreak up other lies in your eye There's a man who says he canput an end to war They shot George Wallace downHe'll never walk around Mines are sleeping in the seaBlow those bridges downBurn that jungle down and kill those Vietnamese. There's a man who says he canput an end to war. In the morning when you wake upYou've got planes flying in the skyFlying bombs made toBreak up other lies in your eye. anodyne
allentown - protesting against recession? that's not a protest. i think the majority of my music collection are protest songs. this list is really missing a lot (and includes some banal stuff. as much as i liked twisted sister, that's not a protest song. the governator used it as his campaign theme!). Where's the Billy Bragg, Woody Guthrie, Joe Hill, Paul Robeson?

Where's the Billy Bragg, Woody Guthrie, Joe Hill, Paul Robeson? This list is the lamest thing ever.....there are tons of great "protest" songs; what about John Lennon, etc. Maggie's Farm is not a protest song, The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll IS a protest song. Say it Loud is also not a protest song.... LouieB

LouieB
eve of destruction is more of a protest song than most on that list.Written by the legendary PF Sloan....I am not sure how old he was....let's check Wikipedia.....looks like he was 20 at the time...I do belive I have a copy of that LP in my collection. I also have one of the versions of Jimmy Webb's tribute to PF on LP, one of the best songs he ever wrote. Kind of like the precursor to the Replacements tribute to Alex Chilton. LouieB
As far as adding to protest songs, Phil Ochs alone wrote handfuls of great protest songs as did Tom Paxton and any number of songwriters during the 60s. I don't think this type of song was even called a protest song much before that. Hell "Ohio" is still one of the great rock protest songs. LouieB

cryptique
Whoever came up with that list doesn't understand what "protest song" means. What, no "Signs" by Tesl-- er, the Five Man Electrical Band?
LouisvilleGreg
I kept expecting "Born In The USA" to be #1, but when I painfully clicked through the whole list and it wasn't even listed, the list became irrelevant to me. Don't get me wrong there were some great choices, but how this song wasn't on the list at all blows my mind. Also where's Billy Bragg? Gil Scot Heron? How about King Harvest by the Band? Lorretta Lynn's The Pill? "Clampdown," is a great Clash song, but "Washington Bullets" would'vd been a much better choice. I could go on and on.
dannygutters
Tony Glover, recalls visiting Dylan's apartment in September 1963, where he saw a number of song manuscripts and poems lying on a table. "The Times They Are a-Changin'" had yet to be recorded, but Glover saw its early manuscript. After reading the words "come senators, congressmen, please heed the call", Glover reportedly asked Dylan: "What is this shit, man?", to which Dylan responded, "Well, you know, it seems to be what the people like to hear". Jeff Buckley did a good Strange Fruit. What a powerful song, I dunno if i'd call it a protest song, totally haunting and in-your-face.

boywiththorninside
I don't know if he wrote "protest" songs, but Curtis Mayfield wrote some superb topical/socially conscious songs. Sam Cooke - "A Change is Gonna Come" - protest or topical? I don't know, but it's great.
