silsurf
Wow, it has been too long since I have seen the band. I went with my new girlfreind, a devoted fan from Chicago. We were LATE due to my mistiming of the warm-up and ran to our seats towards the end of Handshake Drugs. It was amazing to see the shift in the groups performance and attitude once the audience was invtied to come down front. I was ectastic to be in that group and wonder whether it wil be a similar situation on Weds at the Greek. Becasue WE WILL BE THERE. On a side note, I thought Pat Sansone was burried for some reason, I could not hear him hardly at all. Any thoughts on that? -Henry

jtrollmann
My first Wilco show! And what a beautiful venue to see the band, at the remodeled SB Bowl! Wilco has the best stage lighting I've ever seen from a band! The moon was rising, distant views of the pacific, Eucalyptus groves dotting the surrounding hills. And a fantastic setlist. I was in heaven underneath those California Stars! See ya in L.A.
the_ashtray_says
the band sounded great as ever last night. the crowd in the middle however, sucked. no heads nodding along to songs, almost no movement at all, the people around me looked like statues. Nels though was killing it, and Glen was the precise beast he is (his hair's gettin' long too). i think having seats in the lower section was also a mistake, i didn't understand why it wasn't just all GA down there (not like it would have helped me get down there anyway). but for sure it was good to see'em again. highlight for me was too far apart. that was nice. pnêyu
the band sounded great as ever last night. the crowd in the middle however, sucked.Agreed, and not just in the middle section. After we swarmed the stage, there were more enthusiastic faces up front, but that didn't make up for the general cluelessness of a lot of the crowd. Still, it could've been a lot worse. Kudos to the band for awakening what might've been a comatose crowd and kicking out a fun show.
benjamin
Too Far Apart I love that song. I've never heard them play it. Hope it's in the set on Wednesday
westlakesteve
Wonderful show. Wonderful evening. Classic Tweedy to make a snipe at the late arrivers and the "empty" front row. Glad I got to hear that. They're so pro that it didn't effect their performance, but it did get kicked up a notch when the stage was swarmed just prior to Too Far Apart. "It feels like we're playing a picnic," said Jeff. He obviously enjoyed it. We were 9th row on the right side of the audience and stood the entire show. I loved the Via Chicago/Spiders encore. The Lonely 1 and all the Sky Blue Sky songs were great. And if Handshake Drugs doesn't rock, nothing does.
curl
someone else mentioned earlier how lame the crowd was at the Santa Barbara Bowl. Well let me just tell ya, I have never seen crowds at concerts as lame as those in santa barbara but in particular those at the Santa Barbara Bowl. Perhaps its just that laid back california cool or maybe everyone is just overcome by the natural beauty of the place but come on people, if you are really that not into it, just go home. Let me explain why I am so salty, Last night at the bowl was the second time I was told to sit down at a concert at the county bowl. I must admit that I was pretty pumped to see Wilco rockin it. I stood up and started groovin pretty early in the night, and I found myself during handshake drugs to be the only person in the whole house shakin his white ass. It was at this time that I got the tap from the dude behind me "like hey man can you sit down my girl can't see" ARRRGGh this is so frustrating when you go to rock out at a show and you look like the asshole for standing up and dancing. I wanted to say hey guys if you really want to sit down there is a couch at my house that you can use for a few hours while I dance to one of the greatest rock bands ever! So all things work out in the end, I ran into a guy I knew who worked security and he got me onto the floor where I ended up dead center eight feet from the stage and boogied my white boy ass off when the show really got rockin just after Impossible Germany. Que sera sera but man why even bother going to a concert if you just sit there like a statue. Rent a dvd from netflix and take your prozac santa barbara, because real rock music can be a sweaty affair

There were a few us of dancing on Handshake, you weren't the only white ass there, but perhaps you were Bottom line is the show was excellent and Wilco is one of the very few bands making music that matters. BTW, at the Pacific Amphitheatre during the Bob Dylan show, ushers came around telling people to sit. That was a first.

That was a first. no...it is bad...had a couple decades of shows at the bowl, my experience tells me that if you're not down in front or way up in the back, you get hassled for shaking it...lots of stories to tell, but most end up there (not to mention getting chased down the street by security for trying to sneak a teeny amount of herb in the gate...yes, it was confiscated, and no, they didn't get me..and yes, I came back in later...) sb is pretty hung up for such a beautifual "laid back" town. I think part of the deal is the permit conditions for the Bowl, and the nearby wealthy (i.e. politically connected) neighbors... Now Friday night at the Greek, I looked around and saw 8000 people shaking it all night! That's the way it should be for one of the best bands ever!
Wilmera72
Fantastic SB show under the California Stars, I agree. I was lucky enough to have floor seats and was also harrassed by dance nazis. People were shouting "down in front" and "sit down." I ignored the complaints. No one had the nerve to actually say anything to me or the guys in front of me dancing but come on! It's a rock show for chrissakes! Thank goodness the happy true fans got a chance to swarm the stage. That was awesome! I hope people are able to get close at the Greek Wednesday night. Good luck. LA crowds are uptight about seating too and the bouncers are not nice at the Greek. I've been to football games where people stand through the whole thing and Radiohead shows too. People need to relax and let people get their dance groove on. And if my standing blocks your view, well, stand up too! The band will appreciate it. I've been yelled at for standing at the wiltern in LA, Hollywood Bowl, Greek, etc. Sad sad. It's just another sign of the conversative direction the county's taking. Nevertheless, Wilco rocked and I will dance to them anytime I can!
ashes of american flags
are they still doing pot kettle sole acoustic or full band now?
SarahC
Pot Kettle Black was full band. The Lonely 1 threw me for a loop. I had a bit of a beatlemania moment there for a sec right at the beginning. What a show. We managed to bum rush the stage and ended up front row right in front of Pat. The comment about his amp being burried, it wasn't from where we were, my ears are still ringing. Ouch. But it was an amazing time! Here are a few of my favorite pictures: And this:

Whenever I visit SB I don't enjoy it as I used to. The Dave Matthews/Tim Reynolds show was a mess. Radiohead a few years ago was fantastic. I was in the back row and everybody was on their feet all night.
duzer
they will be sitting at the greek in LA too...... I got yelled at during arcade fire... the terrace is espcially lame in regards to standing. It's not hard to make the bowl work for you. If your on the floor, just find someone in row 13 willing to trade seats. Works for me all the time. no one behind you to tell you to sit down.
