Guest Left Arm Tan
I might get yelled at for posting this on Just A Fan and not Someone Else's Song, but what do you all think about Uncle Tupelo?
LouieB
I think they were just great!! Last I looked Jeff Tweedy was in the band so why shouldn't it be here? LouieB
countryfeedback
Form the title of your thread, I thought this was going to be about the Texas Longhorns. I was all ready to respond that I am very nervous about their inexperienced offensive line and secondary but beating TCU last week in come from behind fashion was very encouraging. Fortunately we have a cupcake schedule, with the lone exception being the OU game. For the first time in several years, I believe we will be a considerable underdog. In regards to your actual question. They are my favorite band of all time, just ahead of REM. Feel free to join the fun at jayfarrar.net to get a perspective on Tweedy's former bandmate and current rival Jay Farrar. Or as I explain to my wife the Victor Newman and Jack Abbott of rock music. embiggen
Tommy Womack, formerly of Government Cheese, was telling me about some festival type show they played back in the late eighties, maybe early nineties, in Louisville KY. the Cheese had the stage from 12:00 - 2:00 am and rocked the house. then UT came on and played for 7 people. look at all those guys now. just sayin'. Guest Left Arm Tan
I have been listening to the UT final show today thanks to this thread.oh, i really want to hear the final UT show. any chance i could get a copy?the reason i started this post was that i never really took the time to listen to UT until maybe about the last 6 months... and i've owned two of their albums for like 4 or 5 years. i think i listened to it back in the day and thought it seemed really juvenile, maybe, or something. plus, at first, i hated jay farrar's voice.now i can't stop listening to them. i haven't put on a wilco record in like 3 months (i don't think i've gone 3 months without wilco since maybe 1999). i'm only listening to UT, and it's so amazing. Jeff's stuff i like much, much better, but the jay stuff is growing on me.i'd love to have a few shows. if anyone has 'em, let me know.Last I looked Jeff Tweedy was in the band so why shouldn't it be here?i said that because i posted something once about a guitar or something and got blasted for posting in the tabs section and not the gear section. or something like that. Bubs101
I really hate Jay's voice and I'm not a big fan of UT. For me they haven't aged that well and I'd have a lot of trouble telling the difference between the songs. I have a compilation of em and I find most of the songs to be avarage at best. Songs like Whiskey Bottle are just like a walking Cliche of of a country band with alcohol problems.I really don't know how Wilco spawned from this . Having said that, I adore their version of I wanna be your dog P.S. could be an age thing, was only six when A.M. was released

BigWheeledWagon
I've brought this up before, but this gives me another opportunity to voice my opinion that UT broke up an album too early. I would have loved to hear an album comprised of UT playing the best songs from "AM" and "Trace" (I suppose there would be more Farrar songs than Tweedy songs, as I think "Trace" was the stronger album). I guess, though, you can pretty much make that happen by making your own mix of those two albums. I think Jeff wasn't quite ready to go it alone when he made "AM." "Being There" would have been one hell of a debut album following on the heels of a fantastic UT farewell (not that "Anodyne" wasn't a fantastic goodbye -- in fact, one could argue that a combinations of "AM" and "Trace" would sound a lot like "Anodyne"). quarter23cd
I've brought this up before, but this gives me another opportunity to voice my opinion that UT broke up an album too early.I think it worked out for the best the way it happened. Well, I guess a more amicable breakup would have been nice, but I think UT had run its course. As good as Anodyne was, I really don't see where they could have gone from there. I can understand where the Trace/AM dream-mashups come from, though. Even as good as Trace is, I really only truly love about half it and the rest felt like there was something missing. Same was true of AM, and maybe moreso, but I don't think mashing them together is the answer. They were already pulling in opposite directions and I'm not sure UT had anything left to say as a group. I think Jay and Jeff both needed that space to learn how to become full-time frontmen. Ultimately, I think it worked out for the best--particularly for Jeff. For as much of a Farrar fanboy as I once was, I never dreamed that I'd end up following Jeff's career much more closely.

Guest Left Arm Tan
i certainly do not like jay's voice like i do jeff's. but yeah, jay's has grown on me. some songs, he just sounds amazing. other's he, frankly, sounds like a giant douche. and for UT as a whole, i just think they had a really fresh, raw sound that you certainly don't hear at all anymore. plus, the progression of the songwriting in UT is remarkable. i love them very much. TheMaker
Probably the best band of the '90s. The little kid who was whining about country songs should avoid talking to me, ever.
Bubs101
The best band of the 90's????? In all fairness thats just nonsense and as for whining about country songs, I wasn't, I said I didn't like UT that much and that some of their songs were so stereotypical to their genre
blindgonzo
i've listened to some UT, but unlike some of you, i can't seem to enjoy jay's voice. i'm not saying it's bad, just not my thing.
H.Stone
I actually like UT a lot, but I started listening after enjoying both AM and Trace, so I listen to UT in the context of "what came before" vs. "what could still be, if only..." I especially like the 3/16-20 disc which I just got this spring. I like JFs voice although I tire of it after awhile. I saw SV at Summerfest this year, and I felt really sad after the show. (Keep in mind, they followed a charismatic performance by the Old 97s...) JF didn't seem to be having much fun, and one of the only things he said all night was, "Thanks for sticking with us" followed by a sigh. I wanted to give the fella a hug. (Security!) Trace ended up being the soundtrack for our cross-country honeymoon road trip, so I have strong emotional attachments to that disc, and I also like several things from Okemah, Wide Swing... but I definitely prefer what JT and Wilco have done, where they've gone, etc. I appreciate UT as a sweet, sweet part of history, but I'll take Wilco's stuff over it any time. 'Still Be Around' has a special place in my heart, so for THAT I love Jay's voice...don't tell JEFF, tho
