solace
it's new leg of the tour. wilco tends to switch opening acts from one leg to the next.well initially, at least the Minneapolis show, was announced with Dr. Dog opening
cryptique
"Trying to channel Bono" I think I whispered something along these lines to Melissa as we watched them.
MattZ
They played before Wilco at the 2005 Jazz Fest. They threw red spoons at the audience during a certain song -- so it was like being at a Rocky Horror show. Yep, I was at that show. Never have I been such an island in a sea of confusion. I did not like that band and everyone around me was acting like this was the greatest band ever. And then they started throwing spoons. The vast majority of them left after Cowboy Mouth was done so I was able to scoot right up to the front. So all was well that ended well. But jeez.
LouieB
What is the symbolism of spoons and throwing them? Â LouieB
Guest Alan
Damn. Wilco is really getting some big name openers. It was not always like this. I saw Andrew Bird at sxsw last year and he was incredible. A friend of mine (more up to date with todays music than myself) said Andrew's set at ACL this year blew away Wilco, The Decemberists, and nearly every one else you can think of. You never want to schedule an opener that could take away from the main act. Tells you how confident our little Tweedy has become. Not that any band out there could blow Wilco out of the water, but Iam biased so you never know.yeah, Dr. Dog and Andrew Bird.....big names.

quarter23cd
What is the symbolism of spoons and throwing them? Â LouieBPerhaps they were playing a gig with Barenakedladies, whose fans like to throw mac & cheese. What should Wilco throw? Napkins? Juice boxes?
yermom
Was this actually a photo of the cupcake or was it a preplanned, "Hey, let's pretend we're taking a picture of the cupcake but make sure you get Bird in there?"

MattZ
haha, no shit i think Andrew has sold about 45k of his last 2 albums? Haha, I was thinking the same thing. Let's not forget the cherry on top: Wilco. I am always amazed how many people have never heard of Wilco. They are certainly more popular than they've ever been, but this is not exactly The Rolling Stones.

Wendy
so what does that mean for detroit?Yeah, does anyone know? I'm gonna be pissed if the rest of the country gets Dr. Dog or Andrew Bird and we get stuck with some crap.Well now Wilcoworld includes Detroit as having Andrew Bird opening. Cryptique, they musta been skeered of ya!
cryptique
Well now Wilcoworld includes Detroit as having Andrew Bird opening. I saw Bird at a tiny bar here many years ago, before most people had heard of him (he was billed as having once worked with Squirrel Nut Zippers, and that's about as much as anyone seemed to know about him). At the time he was interesting but not all that memorable. That was long before he started releasing stuff like Eggs and Armchair Apocrypha, however. I do wish that he was playing with his full band on this tour. I guess only the Minneapolis folks will get to see that.
Pizatton
I just read this! I am so excited! I saw Andrew last monday in Lawrence, and Wilco last wednesday in Columbia...both shows were awesome...and now I feel like I get an encore performance in KC! I already had tickets to the crossroads gig, but that just made it even better! Woooohooo!
yermom
I do wish that he was playing with his full band on this tour. I guess only the Minneapolis folks will get to see that. Maybe he can pull Glenn out for some Dosh drum stuff. That would be sweet.
Gobias Industries
Maybe he can pull Glenn out for some Dosh drum stuff. That would be sweet. Glenn could smoke Dosh anyday. That's almost heaven. Throw in Nels and man, that would be the craziest shit ever.
Guest Alan
good news about the detroit show. we saw andrew at lolla last year but we were far far away.

Edie
Haha, I was thinking the same thing. Let's not forget the cherry on top: Wilco. I am always amazed how many people have never heard of Wilco. They are certainly more popular than they've ever been, but this is not exactly The Rolling Stones. When I say "going to see Wilco", about 75% of the time I get the "who"? question. And this is in Chicago. Either Wilco is still way under the radar or I have incredibly unhip acquaintances. It's probably a combo of the two. I could chart this.... LouieB
haha, no shit i think Andrew has sold about 45k of his last 2 albums? That isn't alot of records but by contrast of what he used to do, I suspect it is a ton. It is a ton compared to most openers I bet also. Either way, I would rather see Andrew Bird any time than Dr. Dog. They were okay.... LouieB
