Ten years ago I would have been really excited about this. Now...well, it would be kind of a novelty act, really, to see some guys who haven't played together in over a decade get together and bang out songs that they wrote when they were kids and probably don't have a lot of attachment to anymore.

I would see this if both bands were at a festival or something and maybe UT got together to play a mini-set between the current bands' sets. Nostalgia is great, and like a lot of people, I wish I would have been there...but since both guys are still actively producing new material, I can only assume that that is their primary interest these days.

This is about the only way I see this happening, and I still doubt it ever will.

Generally, I don't like reunions of any sort. However, I'd love to see little hometown reunion UT show. Just one; not a tour. Shut down the streets in Belleville around the town square, set up the stage, and make for one hell of a fun night. Free tickets. Make money off the gazillion cans of $1 Stag that would be sold.

Jay's brother John is a jazz guitarist who lives in Belleville. He's got a standing gig at my favorite restaurant. I get to see him for free all the time and honestly, I enjoy his live performances more than his brother's. Not that I have anything against Jay (who's doing quite well for himself in St. Louis).

"So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past."-F.S. Fitzgerald

Even if UT reunited it wouldn't be the same. The myth is worth far more to me. If I want to hear UT live I simply put on a boot from 13 to 18 years ago.

Reunions usually pale in comparison to the original. And I said usually people, no need to hit me with the exceptions. There are exeptions for everything.

how so?

Well, I meant it tongue in cheek (hence the smiley), but it did seem to me that you were ascribing some ill will or bad feelings to Jay Farrar that aren't necessarily true, and although I have no clue, I would bet are probably false. First, I dont think he'd agree that wilco>son volt. And second, even if he did, I am not sure he'd care all that much since I don't know where that would get him. And third, even if he did care, I don't really see any evidence of sand in his vagina. Seems like he tries to stay away from discussions about wilco. At least in the interviews I've read.

Just my opinion, but Jay seems pretty happy to me to be in Son Volt. I've never gotten the sense that he regrets the past. Or the present.

wilco & son volt both played Wakarusa three or four years ago (if memory serves... i was there but didn't get to son volt) there was some hope at that time that they'd do a little set... would've been a perfect opportunity...

i'd go, of course, but i don't feel great sadness that it'll probably never happen.

saw farrar solo a few years back at the bottleneck - thought he put on a really nice show. not a ton of personality but he does his coalminer dirges very well.
