markosis
My Morning Jacket - Move On Up (Curtis Mayfield)Â Yikes. I can't see how that could be good in any way. I've never heard it, so I can't say, but I think I'll avoid that one. To me, Curtis is like The Band or Joni Mitchell: there are some artists that are so unique they are better off left alone, as far as covering them is concerned. Their version of NY's "Lotta Love," too.

PopTodd
You're pulling my leg right? That's too crazy! No he (she?) is not. And it is great. I thought of another wonderful, improbable one:"I Want You To Want Me" - Dwight Yoakam (Cheap Trick)and yeah, it's pretty great.

poppydawn
Any covers by Johnny Cash works for me especially... Rusty Cage (Soundgarden)Rowboat (Beck)Hurt (NIN) I was beginning to wonder if anyone was going to mention these. Those are three of my favorites. His version of "The First Time Every I Saw Your Face" absolutely kills me.   oh oh oh oh... so good... I've also enjoyed their "I Wanna Be Your Dog" (Iggy Pop) as well I never get tired of either version of that song. Other favorites: Kirsty MacColl - You Just Haven't Earned it Yet, Baby (The Smiths)Ben Folds Five - Video Killed the Radio Star (The Buggles)Rolling Stones - Time is on My Side (Irma Thomas, although I do prefer her version.)The Pixies - Head On (Jesus & Mary Chain)The Ramones - California Sun (The Rivieras)White Stripes - Rated X (Loretta Lynn)
Lammycat
The Pixies - Head On (Jesus & Mary Chain)I agree it's a good cover, but I still like the original better. J&MC have that ethereal tonality to a lot of their tunes that just works great on this tune.

J&MC have that ethereal tonality to a lot of their tunes that just works great on this tune. Oh, I love the original, too. I love the ethereal tone, especially in contrast to the distortion on The Pixies version. One version is sleek and slinky. The other's bombastic and wailing.

yermom
Listening to Bonnie Prince Billy in my truck today and had to sit in the driveway to finish Will's cover of R. Kelly's "Ignition." "Bounce, bounce, bounce, bounce...." It's going to be in my head all day and it's gong to be fun!
hollow
Elliott Smith - Thirteen (Big Star)Elliott Smith - Trouble (Cat Stevens)Elliott Smith - Blackbird (Beatles)Elliott Smith - Jealous Guy (John Lennon)Elliott Smith - ok, any cover by Elliott is tops for me (sorry, Wilco, but Elliott is my #1) Elvis Costello does a lot of good covers too -- liked the trade-off of songs between him and Fiona Apple on the VH1 special. Also did some songs with Ben Gibbard and Billy Joe Armstrong, I don't particularly care for Green Day, but the sharing of songs and covers of each other's works was well done. Especially liked the following "trade" of songs:Elvis Costello - I Know (Fiona Apple)Fiona Apple - I Want You (Elvis Costello) Ryan Adams - Wonderwall (Oasis) - better than the original And, I also like the covers that Jeff Tweedy does solo.
