jc4prez
I'm certain that even the first part of your sentence has not been "established" here. How so? I think almost everyone here belives people have free will and can make the choice to "sell Out"
Sir Stewart
Not everyone believes in the concept of the "sell out."
jc4prez
Not everyone believes in the concept of the "sell out." well thats why I also said "or play the capitalist game however you like to call it" meaning that their not selling out but they are in fact exchaning their music for profits in order to endorse a product. OOO
glad to see people are still disscussing this. to try to bring it somewhat closer to its orginal concept. If we have established that artists can and will "sell out" (or play the capitalist game however you like to call it) does it tarnish the art or the indivdual if its used in a commerical. As I've already stated I try not to look up to musicans (except for their musical abilty). That being said do you all fell that once you've herd a song in a commerical it looses some of its meaning. As stated before music can be reused in a dramatic setting to enhance the film, in effect a connection can be formed between the two peices of art that were once the same. But when you hear a song like "You Are My Face" (or whatever song) being played over a Voltzwagen ad does it tarnish the song? Or just your image of Jeff Tweedy and the band? Personnally I can't stand that Sky Blue Sky is now attacthed with cars, a device that is destroying our planet. Had I herd the song in a tv show or film, I doubt I would have minded. Now on the other hand Jack White wrote music explictly for the coke. This although still unsettling seemed more exceptable for me as a listener since it was the creation of a new peice of art that had the purpose of selling coke. Where as I'm sure Jeff wasn't trying to sell cars when he penned "you are My Face" We'll at the very least, we've just established the importance of a good English teacher. There are multiple ways to hear this song...(the self preciousness of the Indie crowd or the killing culture of commecialism) The greatest lost track of all time: The Late Greats' "Turpentine" You can't hear it on the radio You can't hear it anywhere you go The best band will never get signed K-Settes starring Butcher's Blind Are so good, you won't ever know They never even played a show You can't hear 'em on the radio The greatest singer in rock and roll Would have to be Romeo His vocal chords are made of gold He just looks a little too old The greatest lost track of all time: The Late Greats' "Turpentine" I can't hear it on the radio I don't hear it anywhere I go The best song will never get sung The best life never leaves your lungs So good, you won't ever know I never hear it on the radio Can't hear it on the radio

jc4prez
...in other words...MAKING A LIVING. No, making a living, at least to me means: fuflling one's needs for survival. If you sell a song to a corporation for an ad campign (if your a big artist) your gonna land a big pay check.

jc4prez
I have to run to class now but I wantede to point out...... I know alot of you arguing on behalf of capitlism download music. How is that fair? Aren't you ripping off the arists? You guys talk about how hard work is deserving of payment, but something inside of you tells you that they have enough money that they can afford to have you steal their art. I wouldn't call that faith in the system your supporting.

jc4prez
SO THEY ARE MAKING A FUCKING LIVING! Just because they are going over what you feel they should have doesn't mean they aren't making a living. they are making severl hundred livings is my point. Its insane that people can be sick and dieing all over the world and people have more then they could ever use. How do you not see that as fucked up. As tom waits said "were all gonna be just dirt in the ground". So how can you justify living la vida loca while people can't eat? This is their only chance at life as well. Why should it be misreable while you (or these artists) are having a gay old time.
