Guest David Puddy
his argument is that nels does the same thing on every song. "a flurry of notes." which i understand what he's saying, but i think nels owns, and like his addition to the band.

Guest Speed Racer
I really didn't care for his 2004/2005 work with the band for the most part, but I think he's found a good niche these days. I was also surprised to find that many of the guitar solos I initially disliked (some of which I still do dislike) on SBS were Jeff's work, and not Nels' (e.g. the electric work on Please Be Patient With Me). What I'm getting at is that if your friend is basing his/her Nels opinion on his honeymoon phase with the band, I'd merely flash the knife and play some recent shows. rwrkb
wilco has changed pretty much album to album and i'm no longer willing to put that solely on the addition or subtraction of one member. that said i don't have any issues with the current lineup, but then again i've never really had issues with any of them, i think they've all served their purpose (obviously)
napoleon
any significance with that number? to see if he walks with a limp. rwrkb said it perfectly.

Halsey12
Why does everyone always need positive reinforcement that the band they like is good?
Guest Speed Racer
Why does everyone always need positive reinforcement that the band they like is good? Several reasons. One of them is the same reason you posted your question - people like validation, and positive reactions to their own opinions. In this case, any response will validate your post, so there you go. The second reason is validation of time/money investment. If you were a big runner, skier, or climber, and your friends started saying your sport of choice was stupid, you'd probably defend yourself because of your emotional and monetary investment in the sport. Fans:Ah, emotional investment. If someone insulted your family member or your friend, you would most certainly not hesitate to defend them. A fan's relationship to their object of devotion (for lack of a better phrase) is definitely one of admiration, and fans are likely to defend their relationship. Think of it this way: you like boyfriend, you like friend => you want boyfriend and friend to like each other (this example, of course, can apply to non-fanatics as well). Why do religious zealots try to convert people (or heck, even defend their faith)? Because they *believe* that their religion is inherently good. If you don't believe yet, perhaps they haven't presented you with the right case for faith. Fanaticism is pretty straight-forward regardless of what you're devoted to. Casual Listeners/Fans:Validation of identity. If you define yourself by the music you listen to or the scene that musician or band 'belongs' to, then you are certainly going to try to argue that your band/scene/identity is not crap. (* note: the 'scene' or identity needn't be one popularly defined; even if it's simply how you define yourself, well, no one likes having that challenged).
the_fliz1
Why does everyone always need positive reinforcement that the band they like is good? Because behind all of the facades that everybody puts up, about 93% of people on this earth need reassurance from other people to make themselves feel like they belong and that they are liked. At least that is what the teacher said when I took a Psychology class.

froggie
Nels does an excellent job on the lap steel on songs like mountain bed, jesus, and airline the same nels argument came up for this show... http://forums.viachicago.org/index.php?sho...mp;hl=melbourne
DAngerer09
I think if you are RIGHT in front of Nels and his monitor at a show, he can be a bit much sometimes, especially if you haven't seen the band live in a long time. But, I've been in that spot and he rocked my face off...

Sweet Papa Crimbo
I like Nels but does anyone think Jeff might start to get jealous real quick of all the attention that Nels is drawing on stage? Wow...'a circle can have one center' I did notice that a lot of folks around me were really attuned to what Nels was laying down when I saw Wilco in Dallas. However, I can't imagine that all those folks had ever heard of Nels before he joined Wilco. Nels is a complimentary piece to Wilco. I hope that they are able to keep the synergy going for a while.
