aricandover
FYI - here is the source for that photo. Aug/Sep 2003 Harp Magazine I was at that Cleveland show. it was good, but it was the only show of that tour, where Jim didn't play with Wilco.

miss jayne
Didn't someone say "Nels is essential"...And as for Rock Star posturing I say the world was a lot more fun when there was more of that .My friends that saw Wilco recently for the first time pointed out how rare it is to see a songwriter at a peak like Jeff is, with a band so tight and focused as Wilco is right now. I think all of the different line ups have their strong points its so fun to watch the evolution.

eisler
I agree.I liked Wilco better with Jay.I liked his playing style alot better.Nels just runs a bunch of notes together in a cluster.Jay's phrasing is much better.I also liked his pedal steel country licks he played alot. heffer
are you kidding? nels' phrasing is one of the best things about his playing!!! yeah, he might do the insane tremolo picking a lot but his sense of space elsewhere really is something
mastershake
my very, very good friend tells me yesterday that he thinks nels has ruined wilco. i can't say i agree. should i stab him when i see him this weekend?i agree with your friend. give him a high five. Sweet Papa Crimbo
nels and pat are good, but they don't equal this. But Leroy obviously didn't want to continue. Look at the body language in the picture.
Relatively Clean Rivers
What is with all the hate towards Pat, Nels, and Mikael? Jeez, if you really want to know what is embarassing its not Pat's hair style or windmills, its all you "fans" trashing 1/2 the band! Each member contributes equally to the greatness that is the current line up. Wilco has NEVER been this good, they are- dare I say it- literally the perfect band. Six amazing members = passionate, complete, and full sound. I don't think Wilco would be the same without any of the current members.

Should be the closing statement in this thread. And about Nels, the man is a guitar genius. I'm a lead guitarist, been playing for 15 years, I studied at the Berklee College of Music, and I know a brilliant guitarist when I hear one.. And yes, Jay was great, but Nels is in a league of his own.. He really is the finishing touch that made Wilco a "perfect band".
