Wilco Winter Residency

Like anywhere else in Chicago, things can change block by block.

Very true. Look, I live a mile and a half straight north of the Riv. Most of the sketchy stuff is 2 blocks east of the venue over on Sheridan; the area right around Broadway & Lawrence (where the Riv is) is fine. The el station is within sight of the venue, Broadway & Lawrence are both high-traffic streets with late night bus routes and plenty of cabs, the Aragon's around the corner, the Green Mill, Crew, and some other trendy new bar are all just north of the intersection -- it's not like you're going to emerge from the venue doors into a dark alley crawling with meth addicts and violent homeless people. There's a Starbucks right across the street from the Riv, geez! Let's not blow this Uptown thing out of proportion.

And if you're that concerned about walking to your car after the show, try parking north of the venue, up near Broadway & Argyle where there are a bunch of Vietnamese and Thai stores/restaurants; that stretch of Broadway is better than the stretch that goes from just south of the Riv to Montrose. Because it is true that Chicago changes block by block, and for socio-historical reasons that I won't write about here, the stretch of Broadway south of the Riv hasn't done as well as the stretch north of it. And on an unrelated note, if you do end up parking by Argyle, I can recommend some fantastic restaurants to check out before the show. Yummy!!

These are the two most important questions in the thread and I can't find an answer anywhere! Please help!

I think I offered a theory on the cost earlier in this thread, but no one seemed to notice. I am guessing 5-night package around $130-150. Just a hunch. Edit: I think this could be a lot lower too, so I guess my theory isn't worth shit.

And Lou (or anyone else), I will probably buy the 5-night deal but I can't go the first 2 nights. So, we can definitely work something out.

I'd be up for taking the first 2 nights off your hands...

The question I have is: Is the Riv going to be GA for all nights? I would assume so, but you never know. Since I'm planning on the 5-day and various friends will be rotating in and out of my "crew" each night, I'm kinda hoping it's GA so we can hang together.

I can't think of any reason that it would be GA for some shows and not others.

The Riv is always GA, as far as I know. I can't remember ever going to a seated show there.

I do, however, remember a Wilco show there one August when the A/C went out. Heh.

The balcony might be reserved seating, but the main floor is nearly always standing/GA.

I did go to one seated show at the Riv, but it was the Residents back in 1990, so it was hardly your average, garden-variety show. ;)

Not disputing any of that. Just saying for people who have never been in the area before, its not the same type of neighborhood as Metro, or Double Door, and you do need to exercise a little more caution if you wind up parking on a side street.

I totally agree. NO side streets for women who are either unaware and alone or not comfortable with the area (or some guys either). I remember when Wicker Park (Double Door area) used to be iffy too, but those days seem to be gone. Uptown, while gentrified still has its moments. (Hell I remember when the area around Metro, Wrigleyville, was iffy as well....) There are some large parking lots in the area and it is better to spend some dough on one than end up on a side street in a bad situation. Besides, parking in Uptown can be pretty tough going.

As for GA at the Riv, yea I would think so. The Riv is pretty much of a dump, and the balcony has seats that are GA as well. Perhaps the rehabing of the building next door bodes well for a makeover for the Riv. In fact some of the restaurants in the area are pretty upscale anymore and the Vietnamese ones on Argyle are fun and good. Argyle St. can get a little rough along the Sheridan end. The Green Mill is certainly fun and you can drink in there before the shows in the evening. I used to hang there alot (I worked down that block) and miss going there. Uptown has alot to offer.

As for unused tickets, I am trying for a pass, but remember me anyway. I won't start any hard barganing until after all the sales are over.

So it's safe to say if I buy two five night packages, the tix I can't use/afford will be taken off my hands (and money will be placed in them)?

I would say anything you get will be easy to sell. This will be a hot one for sure on a cold night. (several of them) We will need heat out in front of the Riv (and maybe something to share with the street people.... :lol )

If anyone is planning on getting the package and can't go each night PM me. I'd like to go to more then one but since Wilco annonced the show this week there is no way I have that kind of money to throw down on tickets.

I'd be able to pay someone for nights they cant use prior to the show I'd just need december to save up.

Thanks!

And good luck getting tickets everybody. I don't think it should be that hard for the non weekend shows.

i'm going to make sure that i have no night classes so i can hit all five nights up. i am more excited for this than for anything in my entire life!

i would be willing to drive for a carpool from milwaukee, which may include bunking together if we decide to be friends soon...

bus or train info sharing would be appreciated as well. how sweet would it be to have a bus with a few of us giddy freaks on it?

pm me if interested

edit: megabus is a great deal...just a buck per seat at times, little more at others. FUN!

union station is 8 miles away from the riv, though...
