PopTodd
It's a tv show. About what is, ostensibly, music.
Sly like a Foxwell
really more of a popularity contest. it just proves that cougars can stay up later to vote than the tweeens
gogo
The tweens in my viewing group weren't too happy when that thought was expressed prior to this week's shows. The #1 Archie Fan in the group actually took the result pretty well, considering. Some crazy cougar sat down next to me on the bus this morning and expressed her love for "Cookie" for 20 straight minutes.
Analogman
About what is, ostensibly, music. Or is it just about some people who can maybe sing - and if so, sing other people's songs, and still yet - may go on to make an album where all they do is sing songs written for them while using tools such as Auto-Tune and the like. Interesting - we have had this debate before, I think.

I'll admit I have probably never watched more than a few minutes of this show - but as I have a habit of reading Billboard.com every morning, I often read about these people after the show is over. It seems like they have success, but it appears to be fleeting. I suppose that is how it is for a lot of bands though - nothing new really. As I said once, when I was younger, Britney Spears was named Tiffany.

I didn't watch at all that year and have watched sparingly ever since. I follow along on the internet to keep up with who's who. And speaking of former Idols, what has happened to Carrie Underwood? Woah. She trying to get rid of her nice girl image? He still posts here occassionally. Wow, his career really has gone down the shitter.
Lammycat
Fleeting success can draw a considerable amount of money for the singers and whomever they're inked up with, though. I'm not defending the format at all, just that the "music" business aspect in the case of AI is not much different from in the conventional process of signing people. And sure - they will have more bread than I will ever have.
chumley
I wonder how things are working out for the couple of people who have had success after being on this show (Kelly Clarkson, the blonde country singer chick). Didn't they sign like the least artist-friendly contracts in the history of music or something? I thought I read an article once that detailed the numerous ways in which the AI contracts completely screwed them...from royalty rates to merch, etc..

Analogman
One of them, (I forget who) had their whole tour cancelled, due to low ticket sales - last year, I think it was.
watch me fall
I know Kelly has had some problems with her record company. Not sure about her contract. As for Carrie Underwood, I doubt she has anything to worry about.
chumley
As for Carrie Underwood, I doubt she has anything to worry about. Except for the price of oil and its effect on the global economy.

marino13
I knew as soon as they announced the vote as 56%-44% at the beginning of the show that Cook had won. They don't always announce the margin and I knew that this piece of info was being thrown out there for a mindfook.
Wilco Worshipper
I just like how this is in the NON-music-related forum. BTW, note that I did NOT put this in 'Someone Else's Song', as that would be giving some of these people WAY TOO MUCH credit ^ In my first post when I started this thread.
