Chicago area folks, I received a voucher via email a little while ago that can get 2 people in for free to his show tomorrow night at the Metro (18 and over). I'd be glad to forward it to somebody who can actually use it. I can't quite figure out why I got it--my only guess is that it must be the same promoter as the Nels Cline Singers show I'm coming out for in June. I'll pass it on to the first person who PMs me with their email address.

It sounds like the promoters are desperate.....when they start giving tickets away to the Metro (not a really huge club, but pretty good sized) they must be expecting a disappointing audience.

:ohwell That's too bad for Gary. I think someone who went to the show in CO said there were about 100-150 people there. That's rough.

yikes.

he had close to 1000 in Mpls, granted they downsized the venue from a 2000 seat one (not that surprisingly tho)

Where was he in Mpls? the State? I wonder how the turnout was tonight in Madison. It had to help that he was double-billed with the Mekons.

it was at the State, they moved it to the Pantages in the last week due to poor sales

Awww, I really do feel bad for him--especially in Minneapolis. I saw he canceled his Fillmore show--probably due to lack of ticket sales, then.

The NYC show seems to be doing alright..Most of the Orchestra is sold out. I am still surprised at the $35 price tag (Which after service charge and shipping if you order 1 ticket is about $48!!!!) So my guess is so far it sold 700 or so tickets.

$35 does sound steep, although from what I understand, everything is more expensive in NYC. How much are his tickets elsewhere? They were $20 adv/$22 door in Madison, but he was with the Mekons.

Ditto that :( ...I was way off with my info. last week, I thought he was in town last week. sorry vc! Either way, I can't make his show tonight and I am even more disappointed that I can't go after reading things are not going so hot. Looking forward to hearing about the show.......

Solace, u going to the Rochester show on the 30th?

not too many at the madison show, also, i think people left after the Mekons. I'd say the front dance floor/mosh pit area was pack and a smattering of people in seats, probably around 200 people. I enjoyed Gary but after seeing him for years with the Jayhawks it was odd (and sad) he was on stage with kids half his age backing him. nothing against them im just used to seeing Gary with Tim/Mark/Karen etc...

The Mekons kicked ass. lots of joking around, fun time, loose set. foul mouthing and dancing by langford

:ohwell I thought maybe the Mekons crowd would stick around, but down to about 200 for Gary? Maybe he and Marc will get a better response when they hit the road together.

Eeek, that doesn't bode well at all. Fortunately, bad ticket sales doesn't = bad show; I saw Os Mutantes on one of those two-for-one tickets at Metro, and that show was insane! I'm definitely looking forward to tonight's show.

Gary's canceled his west coast dates due to low ticket sales; double eeek. There's a blog about it on his site.

Good news from the blog, though - a Best of Golden Smog compilation coming out on Rhino this summer? I'll cross my fingers for some b-sides!

Got home late last night from the Low show in Milwakee and had an email for two free admissions to the Louris show at the Metro--apparently scrapping for attendees at the last minute. Bummer.

Yeah, it was sparse. Gary sounded fantastic (his voice is one of my favorite voices of all time) but it was just strange seeing him with nary a Jayhawk to back him up (what's Marc Perlman up to these days, anyway?). The show just lacked...something, that feel-good energy that I always used to associate with a Jayhawks show.

The new songs are good, and he played some Smog tunes, which were great, but overall I'd say the night just felt "off". My favorite part of the evening was the encore, when it was just Gary and his acoustic. I think he probably should have played two nights at Schubas instead; something about seeing him in that half-full Metro was just depressing.

Don't know what Marc is up to, but he was standing in the doorway of the Pantages when I arrived last Tuesday in Minneapolis. Gary mentioned his name during the show too - but he never went on stage to play with them. I was kind of hoping he would go up for a few...

This was the third time I have seen Gary perform live...the first two was with Mark Olson in 05.' (Ames IA and Chicago) and I thought Gary rawked the Metro. I had a lot of fun. I just hope that Gary and Mark have a show/tour in the fall...but seeing that they both are having a hard time getting people to their solo shows, I'm thinking they'll just have a cd out. Hopefully I'm wrong about this. I know some of us over on the Jayhawksfanpage have talked to Gary after his shows and he has said he will be touring with Mark. (fingers crossed!!!)

That is good news....b-sides would be awesome. Vagabonds is really growing on me. I can't say it's my favorite style of music, but the songwriting is excellent, and the arrangements are very good too. Reminds me of Blue Rodeo in that way, I don't like all of their catalog, but they've made a lot of stuff I've enjoyed at various times over the years.

I agree - I think Gary is a very talented songwriter. Even his misses sound like hits.

girlincognito, I feel like a Gary/Mark tour would certainly draw more people than either of them solo. Here's hoping!

While it's grown on me, I still have a hard time making it though the album. I just find it...boring at time I guess. I haven't been truly impressed with Gary's efforts in quite awhile though: every album seems to have as many misses as hits. And boy can the lows be low.

This album starts with the two highest highs (True Blue & Omaha Nights) and then hits the lowest low (To Die A Happy Man). After that, it's kinda wishy-washy. I'm not really swayed one way or the other.

Hmmm, what about Golden Smog? I thought Another Fine Day was effing brilliant, pretty much from beginning to end. Then again, I think Blood On The Slacks sucked pretty bad, so I don't completely disagree with you.
